Do B10 basktetball titles matter to you?

Submitted by Michigan Arrogance on

I think about this every year: watching college basketball since I was 13-14 and grouwing up out of state, I never got the sense that conference titles are all that important in basketball. The main reason is that making the NCAA tournament is such a HUGE (/thedonald) deal. So, do you put a lot of weight on B10 basketball titles? Other conference titles? How does it compare to the B10 football title (the holy grail) and how does it compare to getting into the NCAA tournament?

No.  I don't remember '85 and '86 for the B10 titles.  I just remember losing to Nova and Iowa State in the second round each year.  At least we enjoyed a classic Sparty No moment when Mark Brown missed FT's and MSU bitched about the clock or something in '86, so there's that.

Winning the B1G but losing in the second round of the NCAAs put a damper on those years.  It's a shame, but it's all about the Dance.

'89, '92, '93, '94 were all wildly successful years - because of the NCAA Tourney.  No one cares that those teams did not win Big Ten Conference.

It's funny how opposite the Michigan football and basketball teams were during the 80's and early 90's.  The football team was always consistently successful, winning the B1G numerous times, but they could never take it to the next level.  The basketball team was very inconsistent, but come Tournament time they stepped up to the top.

I think basketball conference titles are important, but mean less than in almost every other sport (assuming you are in a power conference).  The "guarantee" is not as big of deal since second place in the Big Ten gets in the tournament 100 out of 100 times and 3rd place gets in 98 out of 100 times.  Personally, I would rather be in the Sweet 16 (or further) than win the Big Ten regular season title.  That being said, any time you can hang a banner, it's a big deal.  Also, since it's always going to be a goal for our team, I want them to be happy.  The smiles on the faces of Michigan athletes make my little grinch heart grow two sizes.

When Michigan won it all in 1989, the team did not win the regular season B1G title.

When Michigan went to back-to-back Final Fours with the Fab Five (because they obviously did go. #Freethefabfive), the team did not win the regular season B1G title.

In last year's Final Four, only Butler won their conference's regular season championship.

So no, I don't think it matters that much. Especially in a sport where programs judge their success by how deep they have gone in the NCAA tourney or how short they have fallen.

For example, if you bring up Tennessee men's basketball's lack of success in the NCAA tourney (no Final Four appearances ever), no one rebuts that argument by saying that the team has won the conference 9 times. So, just in general, I think men's basketball is a sport where the NCAA tourney's importance trumps everything else.

Winning one would mean alot for this team. It screams "We're Back". Everyone wants to look at the overall goal, but I think baby steps is the way to go. B1G champ, Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final Four, NC. It would be nice to accomplish several of those this year, especially w/ guys like Stu and Zack in their final year. Those guys especially deserve to win one on their way out.

Yes, making the tournament is a huge deal and teams obviously don't have to win the conference to be in the tournament, but winning conference titles helps with recruiting. It would be nice to have as many banners in the arena that Duke or North Carolina have; they help with recruiting also.

Sort of off topic:

I peruse the ESPN message boards quite often and I saw a Sparty fan post something like, "I find it funny that there are suddenly many fans of Michigan basketball now that they're good. A couple years ago, they could not care less.

My response to him was, "Oh, you mean exactly like Sparty fans with their football team?"

A few years ago, I saw COUNTLESS Sparty fans say, "I can't wait for basketball season" after their annual mid-season collapse in football. All of a sudden, they are football super fans and claim they would rather win in football. Such hypocrites.

of course you should want UM to win a B1G regular season basketball championship.  You should want them to win everything they can!  Is it the number one priority? well, that's debatable...

Yes, of course it matters. I want Michigan to win in every sport in which they compete. Including basketball. I remember some disappointment when Michigan didn't win titles during the Fab 5 era. (of course, if there had been titles at that time, they would have been vacated. But my point still stands.)

Obviously, there are many more football fans at Michigan, and at this site. But that doesn't mean that basketball doesn't matter. I don't see the point in pitting one against the other. In fact, I believe Michigan is entering a golden age, when we will be competitive in both football and basketball on the national stage. There aren't that many teams for which this is true. Kentucky & Duke & Indiana have no football to speak of. Alabama & LSU & USC have no basketball to speak of. Texas, Ohio State, and Florida are some of the few schools actually competing in both sports.

Hell yeah they matter. 1986 Big Ten Champs was a beautiful thing. I remember a pic in the freep or news of Joubert and Garde Thompson hugging at mid court after clinching the title in convincing fashion. Here are the Champs. Glen Rice (very skinny), Loy Vaught (redshirt 1986), and Mark Hughes were members of this team and the NC team. Not bad.

Michigan romped to the Big Ten title in '86, winning their last 4 conference games, the closest being a 17 point thrashing of Ohio State.

Yes, of course it matters. But it is not as validating as a conference title in football as you can still end up going on to a national championship despite not being a conference champion (unlike football, oh wait Alabama derp). But it's so difficult to win one in basketball. You can have a great season and not win the B1G in basketball. In football, not so much..

Winning the Big Ten is nice, but to me it doesn't really determine whether or not the season was a success.  How you do in the NCAA tournament is how good your season is.  This is the opposite of football where losing the Rose Bowl is always preferable to winning a lower tier bowl game.  There the regular season is what counts.

In basketball I would view a season where we won the conference but lost in the first round as infinitely less successful than a season where we came in 4th or 5th but went on to the Sweet 16 or beyond.  There is a reason people talk about the '89 team and the Fab Five way more than they do the '86 team.  At the end of the day, winning the conference (tournament or regular season) is just a nice little accomplishment that only one fan base will remember.  Can anyone actually name who has won the Big Ten each of the last 10 years off the top of their head?  I know I can do that in football with ease and probably couldn't tell you who won the basketball conference tournament last year without the help of Google.

I believe Michigan will win the B1G Tournament in March this season. And one day, I have a vision that C-Webb will apologize and the Fab Five will be welcomed back for a FULL team reunion.

The banners that were removed will be in the rafters once the sanctions are lifted (February 2013).

The 10-year thing is the ban on Webber, Taylor, Traylor and Bullock from interacting with the program.  It's not related to the vacating of games.  Those games will almost certainly never be reinstated - and hence, the banners won't be put back up.

I always wondered why the '92, '93 banners did not say "Finalist" or "Championship Game" or something more grandiose than Final Four.  They did better than just Final Four.

It almost makes it look like it was a lesser achievement than the NIT Championship.  If (when) we do it again, we need to be less subtle.

I want Michigan to devour everything in it's path. Especially for the "revenue" sports, but also in gymnastics and water polo. Plus, When was our last outright B1G title? 1986?

You must be kidding me with that Question...Of course Big Ten Basketball Titles Matter!  Any Big Ten "Insert Sport Here" Titles matter to me and they should matter to you.  Unless you are only a fan of Michigan Football, in that case I feel sad for you.

....because it means my school has  achieved excellence in their own conference something and they are being  recognized for that. I have and will applaud each B10 title in basketball, as well as all the other sports. My "GO BLUE" is for all things "BLUE". Of course, there is the matter of taking the NC home....the more  banners, the cooler those rafters look.
