DJ Durkin turns down UNC, will most likely take Michigan job

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Now that we got HARBAUGH, we can look out for STAFF.

DJ Durkin turned down the UNC defensive coordinator job today, is likely to take #Michigan DC job per source. http://t.co/KBC18nWsPS

let him recruit, let him motivate a position group, let the kids have some semblance of familiarity,

and let someone who knows about college offenses coordinate the defense so we don't have to watch UM get torched by "tempo" offenses like Indiana in '13 and Rutgers in '14 where the defense seemed clueless.

The best thing about the possibility of Durkin - in addition to the track record - is that this guy is may age to boot. It makes me wonder what the hell I've done with my life when I could have been a defensive coordinator at a high level.

Seriously though, Durkin would be an excellent get for this staff. Can't wait to see how this part of the story unfolds actually, coordinators and position coaches and so forth.

Mattison coaching the DL? Would love for him to stay. I'll always remember him kindly. Helped us go from awful to good on defense.

Rumored that OC Greg Roman is coming too.

Recruits looking for the best opportunity to be coached by people who know what it takes to get to the NFL - look at Michigan.

According to a couple recruiting sites and twitter a couple 2016 5* QBs have already mentioned being excited by the hire. Costello and Patterson I think.

"It's definitely a game changing hire," Patterson said on Monday night. "Michigan has always been a place I thought I would play and having him come in there definitely boosts my interest. I grew up going to Michigan football games and I think it's a great hire obviously. He's going to bring them back to where they've been before. As a quarterback, it excites me too because I like his competitiveness and I know a lot of guys are going to want to play for him. I look forward to the recruiting process with him."

is what I think JH does the best. If we remain this thin at DE, it's likely Harbagh will ask Durkin to adapt his schemes to suit.  Durkin will know the assignments and coach accordingly (whether what we run is Durkin's first preference or not for year one). Better that we have the flexiblty to adapt to what the opposing O gives us as well.

I like Mattison, I like Manning but part of me wants this coaching staff to be a complete fresh start. They could/will both land on their feet. If they're brought back I'm cool with that too.

The defense was going to be awesome next year regardless but Durkin would make it top 12-15 imo. His defenses were not just the product of Will Muschamp. I think he's one of the best d coordinators in the game today.

Aside from MSU, there have been no awesome defenses in the big ten for awhile.  I'm hoping for SEC level awesome defense.  Durkin should have some great insight on that.  Better yet, how about shooting for 1985 M level defense from JH's team?

Well for me awesome is not quite elite but will keep you in pretty much every game and put your offense in positions to score. I agree with you though that it may take a year or two to take the title of B1Gs best D from MSU. I'm just excited to see him work with Taco, Jabrill, Dymonte, Desmond, etc. Time to develop.

itd be great not to worry about coughing up scores in final 4 minutes of each half, thats killed m.  youre right though, as long as the D keeps the team in the game and holds onto 4th Q leads, it works.

elite D's typically consist of multiple future pros just dominating opponents and winning at all 3 levels - so they have a ways to go.  but great coaches with track records of molding athletic kids with killer instincts into solid units is perfect start

Get Jim Harbaugh

I absolutely love the reactions of MSU and OSU fans. They claim to not be nervous, but it is so obvious they are and it is evidenced by the amount of talk about Harbaugh on both 11W and the RCMB.
