DJ Durkin turns down UNC, will most likely take Michigan job
Now that we got HARBAUGH, we can look out for STAFF.
DJ Durkin turned down the UNC defensive coordinator job today, is likely to take #Michigan DC job per source. http://t.co/KBC18nWsPS

Harbaugh
The other guy is the exact opposite of his predecessor so he is happy hiding behind the scenes and letting the coach do his thing.

Just small things like having 11 guys on the field should never be granted again after the last couple seasons.
December 30th, 2014 at 1:44 PM ^
I thought that didnt happen anymore?
Gotta say this though, I liked Mattison
December 30th, 2014 at 1:50 PM ^
Re Mattison - big fan, but didn't it always seem like teams with good offenses torched his defenses? Defensive numbers were good, but it seemed (to me) that the performances against weak opponents skewed the overall numbers.

let him recruit, let him motivate a position group, let the kids have some semblance of familiarity,
and let someone who knows about college offenses coordinate the defense so we don't have to watch UM get torched by "tempo" offenses like Indiana in '13 and Rutgers in '14 where the defense seemed clueless.

I love what I'm hearing about Durkin. I think he could be the next guy after Jim.
December 30th, 2014 at 1:46 PM ^
The best thing about the possibility of Durkin - in addition to the track record - is that this guy is may age to boot. It makes me wonder what the hell I've done with my life when I could have been a defensive coordinator at a high level.
Seriously though, Durkin would be an excellent get for this staff. Can't wait to see how this part of the story unfolds actually, coordinators and position coaches and so forth.

Mattison coaching the DL? Would love for him to stay. I'll always remember him kindly. Helped us go from awful to good on defense.

We also shouldn't forget he's a great recruiter, the parents and players love him, and he has a ton of experience that the whole defensive staff could draw from.

great defensive mind- even better recruiter
December 30th, 2014 at 2:27 PM ^
last coach we had was a better recruiter than coach...look how that turned out.

What a way to end 2014. Go Blue.

Rumored that OC Greg Roman is coming too.
Recruits looking for the best opportunity to be coached by people who know what it takes to get to the NFL - look at Michigan.
According to a couple recruiting sites and twitter a couple 2016 5* QBs have already mentioned being excited by the hire. Costello and Patterson I think.
December 30th, 2014 at 2:41 PM ^
"It's definitely a game changing hire," Patterson said on Monday night. "Michigan has always been a place I thought I would play and having him come in there definitely boosts my interest. I grew up going to Michigan football games and I think it's a great hire obviously. He's going to bring them back to where they've been before. As a quarterback, it excites me too because I like his competitiveness and I know a lot of guys are going to want to play for him. I look forward to the recruiting process with him."http://michigan.247sports.com/Bolt/2016-5-QB-Its-A-Game-Changer--342306…

Ran a 4-3 at UF for the most part I believe. His front sevens were always tenacious.
December 30th, 2014 at 2:01 PM ^
is what I think JH does the best. If we remain this thin at DE, it's likely Harbagh will ask Durkin to adapt his schemes to suit. Durkin will know the assignments and coach accordingly (whether what we run is Durkin's first preference or not for year one). Better that we have the flexiblty to adapt to what the opposing O gives us as well.

Great lets keep this roll going.

You gonna volunteer to teach those RBs how to pick up the blitz?

I like Mattison, I like Manning but part of me wants this coaching staff to be a complete fresh start. They could/will both land on their feet. If they're brought back I'm cool with that too.
December 30th, 2014 at 2:01 PM ^
If Mattison stayed on to coach the DL and Manning stayed for the LBs, that would be a pretty damn good start to a defensive staff, damn strong recruiting too. I think/hope those two get pretty serious looks.
December 30th, 2014 at 2:02 PM ^
it helps the ties to kids that we may have been talking with during the past couple years. Maybe for this year's class the most.
December 30th, 2014 at 1:54 PM ^
The defense was going to be awesome next year regardless but Durkin would make it top 12-15 imo. His defenses were not just the product of Will Muschamp. I think he's one of the best d coordinators in the game today.
December 30th, 2014 at 2:16 PM ^
Aside from MSU, there have been no awesome defenses in the big ten for awhile. I'm hoping for SEC level awesome defense. Durkin should have some great insight on that. Better yet, how about shooting for 1985 M level defense from JH's team?
December 30th, 2014 at 2:36 PM ^
Well for me awesome is not quite elite but will keep you in pretty much every game and put your offense in positions to score. I agree with you though that it may take a year or two to take the title of B1Gs best D from MSU. I'm just excited to see him work with Taco, Jabrill, Dymonte, Desmond, etc. Time to develop.
December 30th, 2014 at 3:47 PM ^
itd be great not to worry about coughing up scores in final 4 minutes of each half, thats killed m. youre right though, as long as the D keeps the team in the game and holds onto 4th Q leads, it works.
elite D's typically consist of multiple future pros just dominating opponents and winning at all 3 levels - so they have a ways to go. but great coaches with track records of molding athletic kids with killer instincts into solid units is perfect start
December 30th, 2014 at 5:31 PM ^
but got good-but-not-great instead.
December 30th, 2014 at 2:20 PM ^
Like you said, our defense was only going to improve from last year but this would be awesome, can't wait to get our defense back to the level that it should be! Go Blue!

Especially Sparty. They've been living off our incompetence for several years now.
The free handouts are over.
December 30th, 2014 at 2:10 PM ^
Exactly. They amaze the fuck out of me. First it was, "Harbaugh is a great coach and would be good for Michigan, but he isn't coming there anyway" and now it i, "Harbaugh is overrated and there is nothing to fear."

We'll find out how much Narduzzi had to do with Dantonio's success. Had Narduzzi stayed, they'd still be the three-star-to-really-good machine.
