Division Names

Submitted by w2j2 on

This from the Freep today: 8/3:

"As for the rest of the football-related agenda today, Brandon said naming the divisions, which affects branding, and managing the championship game are critical."

I personally would really like to see a Leadership Division and a Scholarship Division.

Talk about branding!

Every time these divisions are spoken, it would remind the players, coaches and fans that the Big Ten stands for the highest ideals of college education and personal growth.

It would be a statement that the Big Ten wants all its students to reach their greatest potential as members of our society.

On the margin, these names would even help recruiting, imho.

but more to the point, I always liked the names of the old hockey divisions and conferences named after historic people in the game.  I would prefer that to something generic like east and west.   Yost  or Crisler may be a more fittingly historic UM representative name.

Heck, I'd even like naming one the Osborne division, not really partial.

Or maybe name them after the first two Big Ten commissioners

Like the names, but wouldn't that imply that Michigan and Ohio State would not be in the same division? They must play every year. I know Ohio State wouldn't want to be in the Schembechler Division and Michigan wouldn't want to be in the Hayes Division. I think i will leave it up to the Big Ten Officials to name them.

And UM and OSU don't have to be in the same division to play every year, they can protect that game.

But yeah my suggestion is likely not workable because I can't imagine the other teams would vote for it.  I was just having some fun.  But I am serious about naming them after people rather than geographic or something else generic.

And you know it!  You're telling me you wouldn't love to see one of the greatest, most American, classic commercials of all time at least 37 times a game?

Also, the truck driver and girl in flannel make for a perfect division for Ohio St, so I don't know why you would think it was bad

East and West, not something that will get ridiculed until the end of time.

Imagine the SEC with "Speed" and "Confederate Pride" Divisions...

Not trying to be an ass, but seriously.

I've always been partial to "Great Plains" and "Great Lakes". I don't even care if the filling of the divisions makes geographic sense. I just think there's a nice ring to that, especially with Nebraska in the fold.

Great Plains

UW

U-Minn

Iowa

Nebraska

Penn State (yeah, they'd loathe this)

Illinois

Great Lakes

Michigan

Ohio State

MSU

Indiana

Purdue

Northwestern

I think it has to be that way. Intradivisional competition isn't nearly as important as interdivisional competition. Nothing delegitimizes the concept "we need a CCG" than a dynamic like that between the old Big XII North and South, wherein, long before the CCB (heck, even in the preseason), a southern champion was effectively a foregone conclusion.

I'm not saying that the divisions have to be this way, precisely. But I am saying that I'll be disappointed if M and OSU are separated. Furthermore, if they are to be in the same division, UW, Iowa, Nebraska, and PSU need to be in the opposite division to create a semblance of interdivisional parity. This, of course, assumes that Michigan won't long be in these doldrums, that it'll return to its return to its rightfully cocky perch.
