Dior Mathis makes Army AA Bowl?
I just got this press release in my inbox from the Detroit Lions. Looks like Dior Mathis to me...

Never was quite sure why people around these parts dismissed Dior and moved on to the Florida boys and such. I know he's been wishy washy on Michigan, and maybe people are gun-shy because of Boubacar, but the kid can play.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:23 PM ^
but I think the coaches would like some bigger corners who can play press coverage and really jam their guys at the line. Courtney Avery is small, so we already have a small corner in the class. With cullen christian and grimes left, I don't think the staff is still all that interested in Dior.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:26 PM ^
but even he towers over dior
November 12th, 2009 at 3:35 PM ^
We need mad help at corner, especially if Cissoko isn't coming back. We need all the help we can get. The fact that Mathis made the AA Bowl should suggest something. I think we can afford to take a couple of short CBs, given how thin we are at that position.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:50 PM ^
a 5'7 corner when you can get two 6'1 corners
November 12th, 2009 at 3:26 PM ^
and quite honestly missed his chance to commit
November 12th, 2009 at 3:31 PM ^
There was talk that Dior might be better suited to playing slot receiver at Michigan, but clearly we have a logjam at that position.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:26 PM ^
I really hope we land Dior as well. I think his size will limit him a bit in college but as far as being an athlete he is top notch.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:32 PM ^
I'd rather have a guru-approved short guy than a guy who's two or three inches taller but nowhere near as acclaimed. Star ranking arguments aside, Mathis has great athleticism and is by all accounts a great cover corner. I'll take talent when we can get it.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:34 PM ^
I'll take all three and feel a little better about or DB situation for the next few years.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:06 PM ^
It would be great if we could take 3 more cornerbacks. The problem is that we likely have 5 spots left and still have huge holes to fit. I'd feel better about this class if we could get another quality DT, DE, LB, CB and S.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:48 PM ^
If Mathis comes to Michigan, he'll sit on the bench or play special teams for four years. Especially if we get Christian and/or Grimes.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:50 PM ^
then technically we have to take another CB right? I say we take all three (Cullen, Grimes and Dior) if they will come.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:55 PM ^
I don't know...
We'd have Warren (maybe), Woolfolk (maybe a S), Witty (maybe), Floyd, Jones, Turner, Rogers, Talbott, Avery, Grimes, Christian... That's potentially 11 corners, not including Mathis. We need depth, yeah, but that's probably overkill.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:04 PM ^
But even if you did , that's only for one year. Given our overall defensive numbers, I don't think its too much of an overkill. If you are going to use that Schollie to bring in a serviceable S or LB, then I'd say go ahead....any other position, I would take Dior.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:06 PM ^
That's too many. If you have that much depth for every position on offense and defense, you'd need 115 scholarships.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:33 PM ^
but this strategy seems to work fine for Bama and Saban : -)
November 12th, 2009 at 4:45 PM ^
Sorry...random-ass guess. The actual number is 121.
November 12th, 2009 at 6:38 PM ^
Actually it would be 242, as you would have to have 11 scholarship players for each of the 22 starting positions if you are counting both offense and defense.
November 12th, 2009 at 6:50 PM ^
But there you start 2 corners on the field...
November 12th, 2009 at 8:02 PM ^
11 players for 2 cornerback positions = 5.5 players per position on the field
22 x 5.5 = 121
November 12th, 2009 at 4:55 PM ^
The secondary hasn't exactly been an area of strength, so I'll take as many lottery tickets--especially the super-athletic 4* variety--as possible.
Plus, 1-2 of the cornerback recruits (as well as Justin Turner)may be able to play safety.
November 12th, 2009 at 6:32 PM ^
WOOLFOLK! Woolfolk, Woolfolk.
I'm sorry, but this is an absolutely maddening pet-peeve of mine at this point. The fact that the professional announcers just cannot get it right, especially considering his dad was kind of a big deal here, angers me.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:39 PM ^
I'm all about it...
November 12th, 2009 at 9:26 PM ^
That's what she said.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:52 PM ^
Ideally we get Christian, Grimes, and DE Clarence Murphy. Add another Safety and I'm a happy Wolverine fan again.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:52 PM ^
Take as many as you can get, if we have room. Chances are someone will wash out or worse, and we'll be scrambling for help. We need to build the scholarship numbers back up.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:14 PM ^
Mike Williams and Boubacar Cissoko also made the AA bowl.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:17 PM ^
Same school and everything. It is almost frightneing how similar the two line up
November 12th, 2009 at 6:34 PM ^
Because he's black, short, plays CB, and is from Detroit?
November 13th, 2009 at 7:04 AM ^
It sounds like the scouting reports are quite similar: tiny, but extremely fast, great hips, quick feet, etc. And they're not just from Detroit - they're from the same high school.
Not sure where the indignation comes from on this one.
November 13th, 2009 at 7:03 PM ^
As I look back at some of my comments yesterday, I guess I was a bit pissy. Sorry.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:56 PM ^
for the coaching staff, i wonder if lines have been drawn between he and boo boo cissoko??
November 12th, 2009 at 5:00 PM ^
As Obes said somewhere above, Mathis probably missed his chance to commit. I think that ship has sailed, regardless of the Cissoko situation.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:01 PM ^
We should go for Mathis. Christian and Grimes are no sure thing. Christian is going to see Ohio St. two weeks in a row. That is not a great sign.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:22 PM ^
Unless they bust out the checkbook, CC's not going to Ohio State.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:26 PM ^
we're in trouble.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:16 PM ^
Right, because OSU pays their players. Right now, there's an idiot on an OSU board saying "Unless Michigan busts out the checkbook...".
November 12th, 2009 at 8:59 PM ^
Next time I'll be sure to include smiley faces so the shortbus crowd can tell when I'm being sarcastic.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:49 PM ^
cullen announces his commitment a couple days after his visit here, if he doesnt choose us (which hopefully wont happen), wouldnt we have time to shift our focus to mathis more?
November 12th, 2009 at 7:42 PM ^
I thought that Mathis is all but committed to Oregon. All of the scouting reports have him favoring them heavily. I don't see him coming here, especially if they win the PAC 10 and we fall to the bottom for the second year in a row.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:23 PM ^
to do with our record or oregon's record. he's too small and missed his chance
