Did we have alternate helmets?

Submitted by Brhino on

So the buzz before the game was alternate uniforms and non-standard helmets.  Then the team came out, and from my vantage point in row 85 (and later from the replay on BTN) it looked like our standard stuff.  However, I'm browsing the Upchurch photo set and I see this one:

So I guess we had custom helmets after all, with little blue specks in them? Did anyone else watching at home or in person completely fail to notice this?

This link summarizes all the changes over the years. http://mvictors.com/?page_id=63647 There haven't been any major changes or drastic changes and that is my point. There have been slight changes over the years and that is the nature of uniforms. If they totally redesign the uniform in a drastic manner ill be right there bitching with you but they haven't. Paint technology is constantly changing, this isn't even noticeable unless up close inspecting of it. If it looks better on tv though I see no harm in it. I saw nobody bitching last night during the game about these "new" helmets.

Your link is a neat look at the uniform transitions through the years.  My original comment was a joke, primarily aimed at the 'sky is falling' and 'blame DB for everything' camps.  Of course there are going to be minor changes and improvements as new materials become available, and for the most part, that's what UM does.  But do you really think that the bumblebee uniforms fall into the 'minor' changes category?

I know you were kidding, my reply was directed at angry grumpy ol get off my lawn Bando. The bumblebee unis were a one game deal. Similar to a bowl game. Nothing to get overly worked up over. How about those gigantic rose bowl shoulder patches back in the day? Hideous! One game though and it's not a big deal. If they change the regular uniform to the bumblebee ill be right there with you pissed. One game deals I'm not going to get worked up over.

Speaking of helmets, my friend suggested Michigan try Maize facemasks for a game.

No. Oh God, no. It looked like something Delaware would wear.

I think a lot of people owe David Brandon an apology for the meltdown about him yesterday. He was a man of his word and didn't mess with the uniforms. He also help put on a hell of an event.

This x 1000! Grown men whining like 3 year olds about a rumor that there were might possibly allegedly be alternative uniforms -- all your panties in knots and the didn't even happen, fer fok sake! Guys going off on DB, talking all kinds of crap about tradition, branding, and generally being bitchly aught to be ashamed of themselves.

Agreed. Tired of seeing grown men acting like high school girls with all the constant whining about little to nothing. If anybody has the right to bitch about anything it should be Stephen Ross... who hasn't bitched about anything.

I noticed the fleck in the blue of the helmets last night. This was diffrent from last year when only the maize portion had the fleck as the previous article posted.
