Did we have alternate helmets?
So the buzz before the game was alternate uniforms and non-standard helmets. Then the team came out, and from my vantage point in row 85 (and later from the replay on BTN) it looked like our standard stuff. However, I'm browsing the Upchurch photo set and I see this one:
So I guess we had custom helmets after all, with little blue specks in them? Did anyone else watching at home or in person completely fail to notice this?

Yes, the entire helmet was sparkle paint. This differs from last year when only the wings were sparkle paint.

What's the difference?
"Alternate uniforms" should only really count if it's a noticeable change.

So the key for DB is to change the uniforms gradually, so that no one notices until WHAM three years from now we'll all realize they're wearing chrome helmets and pink pants.

Aside from the addition of manufacturer and conference wordmarks, and a small Block M here or there, how have the home uniforms "gradually changed" in any meaningful or drastic way since the introduction of the winged helmet in 1938?

The font used for the uniform numbers has changed.

We have tinkered a little with the shade of maize (and possibly also the blue - it seems to have gotten a tiny shade lighter from what it was in the '70s), and added names to the back of the jerseys.

Your link is a neat look at the uniform transitions through the years. My original comment was a joke, primarily aimed at the 'sky is falling' and 'blame DB for everything' camps. Of course there are going to be minor changes and improvements as new materials become available, and for the most part, that's what UM does. But do you really think that the bumblebee uniforms fall into the 'minor' changes category?

That's what DB wants you to think. He's got you right where he wants you.

Speaking of helmets, my friend suggested Michigan try Maize facemasks for a game.
No. Oh God, no. It looked like something Delaware would wear.

Because our uniforms and helmets are totally awesome just the way they are.

I did notice the metallic blue in the helmets during the broadcast last night. Nice, subtle change. I bet they look great out in the sun.

Agreed. Tired of seeing grown men acting like high school girls with all the constant whining about little to nothing. If anybody has the right to bitch about anything it should be Stephen Ross... who hasn't bitched about anything.

The students were up in arms and actually booed Dave Brandon when he walked onto the field because of the GA debacle.

If by "debacle" you mean "actually having a full student section at kickoff," sign me up for more of them.

Even the sparkly helmets didn't bother me much at all. I hate the whole uniformz idea, and am not a fan of the way we're handling the "Legends" jerseys. This was well done.

go way back, even to the times of Tom Harmon:
Even alternate helmets.

They're pride sparkles guys. Every time Gallon scores a touchdown, helps an old lady across the street, or saves a panda, he gets another sparkle.

This explains it.
And it's pretty cool.
