According to Musberger (yeah, I know) M got "4.5 million" for this game.
But, 110,000 X $50 = $5.5 million. Plus concessions = 6 million. Minus $500,000 for the visiting patsy. Equals ---------- 5.5 Million.
And I'm fairly certain we lost our dignity as well
You know who else lost money? Floyd Mayweather. I would not want to be the person who loses $3m for Mr. Money.
He made $80m+ last year.
i think we lost our manhood. tomorrow we will be calling ALABAMA asking for our balls back
You should concentrate on the comeback.
I don't know how much others on the board will resonate with the title, but this game certainly stands as a testament to David Brandon's massive ego. Unless there is a miracle in the second half, Brandon's scheduling will have pissed away all of the momentum this team had coming into the season, and they will have to start over next week.
The only positive I can see so far is that nobody they face the rest of the year is going to be remotely as stocked with future NFL picks than Alabama.
Losing early is the best case scenario in the bcs.. Lose now then get angry and motivated and win the B1G we go to the Rose bowl... Plenty of time to rebound
I mos def agree. We're all good. No reason to question everything, especially anything besides these kids. They're a great group, and they'll rebound. We have to play the best to be the best.
The way we are losing, assuming it continues in the second half, is going to irreparably hurt the way this team is perceived this season.
Shouldn't care about perception. The players won't.
I kind of doubt that, unless you sheltered notions of UM as a top-5 team. They are not at the level of Alabama and USC, but I count 2 teams in that group who can lay claim to that level of elite talent.
UM will be fine. Go 3-1 in the OOC schedule and nobody will look down on them.
...a beatdown of epic proportions that I have never seen in my 25+ years of UM fandom. Bama is that good, and we are suffering from standard lagged^recruiting/attrition disasters. However, every potential recruit in the world is watching this debacle which really hurts our brand in the long term.
is what I meant
Did you not watch those OSU games against UM when RR was coach? Those were far worse than this one, simply because Alabama is the defending MNC. Ohio State was in the same conference and shouldn't have most of the advantages built into SEC ball. Those losses hurt my soul, this just sucks.
...a beatdown of epic proportions that I have never seen in my 25+ years of UM fandom.
Umm.... did you not watch the Gator Bowl against Miss State?
But to be honest in that game I felt like our talent was being poorly coached and morale was low (post Josh Groban banquets and such). Thus, in that context, I felt that while we were getting killed I felt like there was room for improvement with the right coaching.
In this game UM looks pretty well coached (save some missed tackles) but they are simply getting manhandled. For me, that is more of a beatdown and more depressing.
Hopefully this is the rum talking and I'll feel different in the AM.
Don't know why you got negged for your comments which were spot on....although I doubt the brand will be hurt in the long term. I have figured for a while that it will take until 2014 or 15 to undo the recruiting shortfalls we endured.
Bama has elite talent, probably the best coach in football and a system in place. If tonight was a yardstick, we have a long way to go. The good news, from watching some of our common opponents, is that we should be competitive the rest of the way.
This is my first time getting negged; I guess mods thought my low points score was a sign I was trolling. Guess I'll have to show my login history and UM degrees/schwag in my signature from now on.
It doesn't change my opinion about last night at all. I guess people can agree to disagree.
Makes you stronger.
This sucks...buts lets see the second half, and pray no big injuries. Then it's time to focus on Brady Hoke's goal of winning the B1G.
Go Blue! Win this half and go from there!
Edit: goddanmitall Taylor!! Too many penalties!
People are forgetting that they get to play a team of this caliber without having to give them a return date.
They may only make $4.5 Million on this game, but they still get to have a full slate of home games next year or which ever year the return game would occur. $4.5 Million (Cowboy Classic) + $5.5 Million 2013 Patsy = $11 Million
The alternative, scheduling a home and home with a team like Alabama would give us the full $5.5 or $6 Million for the first game ($6 Mill if we assume that you don't have to pay a team for a home game if you trade a return game), but jack shit for the return game. $6 Million Premier Home Game in 2012 + $0 Return game against said Premier team = $6 Million
Uh, M gets the $5.5 million from a home game with a patsy from the MAC that never, ever gets a return date.
Plus, 90% of the people who go to home games were priced out of this one --- me included.
You seem to forget how much people bitch about playing shitty nonconference schedules
Butthurt. Yes, we could have scheduled a patsy and made more money. We'll just check you down as never, ever complaining about cupcakes, poor schedules, or boring games. You've just cast your vote for profitable baby seals.
But if the argument is UM should play better OOC teams, then this is the best possible situation from a financial standpoint. Buckets of money plus a high-profile game. Just because UM is getting beaten badly doesn't change the math.
That's some sweet drunken math on my part. Oh well.
Now your work belongs to Eternity itself.
We had Domino's for dinner tonight before the game......
A) lets concentrate on the game. B.) very quickly, I'm sure the operating expenses (stadium labor, police outside, insurance, etc) is way higher for home games (even if you count flights for the team).
Really, almost everyone is trying to forget about the game. Go check out the live blog.
They've switched to crystal meth -- alcohol wasn't enuf. (check the comments)
Left the game. Drinking in parking lot.
No, dammit, they're still out there playing. We've waited 9 months for this, even if it should've been given up for adoption, its ours now-
Those who STAY...
BS on the fact your at the game. But if you really are there and left the game then you are an idiot.
Was there and name calling on a blog is sad. Let's be mature.
But what is the profit margin of an average homegame? There are many costs associated with producing a college football game.
M is ranked 4th in profit. 63.2 mil in revenue, 18.3 mil expenses, 44.9 profit.
The total expenses for M football is $18.3 million in 10-11. That is only 1.4 mil per game.
This must include equipment, coaches salaries, travel, etc. etc.
I doubt if the incremental cost of a home game is more than a 100K or so.
Is there a price for dignity?
On the brightside, we scored before the end of the half, but yeah we're a little overmatched
This game would be awesome in two or three years. While I hope we schedule something like this again, I have a feeling the blowback is going to be so severe they won't consider it.
So happy all the positive momentum got pissed away on this little adventure. I really hope this doesn't lead to a tailspin like we've seems three out of the last four years. Also wondering how many decommitments happen as a result of this beyond impressive debut.
Really dude???? We got the opportunity to play the biggest name in college football at this point in time in the marquee game of the start of the season. Dave Brandon would be stupid to have turned this down. I'd recommend taking a break from starting threads until your emotions are in check.
Regardless of their losses on defense, we're still playing the defending national champs. And they did worse to Sparty in a bowl game.
Impeach Dave Brandon.
I'm going to agree with something Kirk on Herb Street said earlier. If the team gives up it will do more harm, but if they keep playing hard you can take something positive out of that
Brandon made a stupid decision. You start scheduling the best after you've made it back, not during the rebuilding process.
Dave Brandon is not a dollars and cents man.
He's a cookie-cutter, by-the-book marketing airhead and he is much more responsible for this destruction than the players or coaches are.
Yes, if you think about the life cycle costs (cost over the long run, not just immediate gratification), this is likely to be a very high price indeed.
What a huge mistake. I hope the team comes back from this. The horror part two.
Losing to the defending BCS champs is nothing compared to being #5 with a Senior ladened team and losing to a Div IAA/FCS team.
Let's have some perspective.
