Did Nuss make a mistake with Funk?

Submitted by massblue on

It is clear that in the absence of DR, we have had a pretty bad running game the last 3 1/4 years and very inconsistent offense.  The common thread has been the awful play by our offensive line. It is safe to say that Nuss made a mistake in not making change for the OL coach.  I would guess that if he had insisted on bringing his own OL coach, Hoke would have gone along.  He does not have a long history with Hoke.

Right now I haven't seen anything out of Nuss that shows me he's made a lick of difference for The offense. Devin Gardner has obviously regressed under him. There still way too many tackles for losses..

The jury is still out on Nuss , but the early returns don't look good

is getting the ball across the goal line.  And they're not getting ball across the goal line in large measure because of flaws, faults, and mistakes that should have been rectified during the spring and reinforced during fall camp.  Four games in we shouldn't be having WRs refusing to block and running sloppy routes, we shouldn't have RTs playing lost in space, and we shouldn't be seeing the QB throw passes to no one in particular.

I think it's safe to say that at a minimum, Nuss has mustered competent offenses at his previous gigs.  Did he just forget how to go about that since coming here?  Or might there be other issues, like a QB that is not appearing to be very coachable at this point, or maybe it is a general lack of development.

Funk should have been gone a long time ago.  Someone on here broke down the success of his lines some time ago and I believe the results were as underwhelming as we've seen here under his coaching.  I think Nuss would have better results with a new position coach..

Still, we have to keep in mind the lack of O-line recruiting and , hence, the youth and lack of depth.  Poor Devin G. was massacred last year and shows symptoms of shell shock now as a result.  I wish DG had the chance to devwelop under one good system with a decent line. He'd probably be pretty good right now.  Even still, that line is a disaster and even if Funk is an adequate coach they will need more time.  I don't want to say "next year," but face it, they are mostly pretty young and inexperienced.

That said - fire Funk.

In the 2010 and 2011 recruiting seasons, michigan recruited 3 O lineman in total. Christian Pace, Tony Posada and Chris Bryant. They are obviously not on the team, so zero guys left from two classes. Is that an excuse? No, but it's hurting in 2014. That and the O-line does look better this year, although not great.

Unless Funk can get Miller to change DG's laser-like focus on a single receiver--u know who--or get Glasgow to turn DG's head to see the wide open guy that is not--u know who--then i can't really blame Funk for this Tire Fire Offense.  On one play i specifically recall, DG forced a ball into double coverage incomplete, while a WIDE OPEN Williams was screaming down the sidelines.  Maybe glasses would help??
