Did Carvin Johnson or Brandon Herron Play?

Submitted by imdeng on

We will of course know much more when the Defense UFR comes out on Wed - but meanwhile I am wondering whether Carvin Johnson and Herron saw significant minutes after return from their respective injuries - also - if yes, them how did they look compared to ther pre-injury form? Does it look like Carvin will jump over Gordon for the starting role?

Did we play our freshman CBs - Cullen, Avery, Talbott? Did anyone look like getting better and perhaps challenge Rogers for the starting position later in the season?

How about Demens? Not the Ezeh is setting the world on fire - but we will need a replacement for him next season and I am hoping to see some signs of progress from Demens.

I could not catch the game on TV (damm you ESPNU!) and highlights are kind of not-effective as far as the questions above are concerned.

I'm not sure the %, but it was significant minutes.  I noticed the leg brace or wrap.  Hasn't anyone put up the torrent yet?

edit:  didn't notice him not being in at the end.

Carvin Johnson played and was responsible for the 20 yard TD run their RB had. He pulled an Ezeh and stayed still until he got blocked out of the play. I was trying to figure out who 13 was until they showed the back of his jersey on that replay.

I saw that as well.  Pam Ward blamed Roh but I think he had contain and did his job properly, whereas Johnson was supposed to flow and fill the hole that the run ultimately went through.

Only problem was he either never saw the ball/rb or had a deer in the headlight moment which gave IU enough time to seal him off opening a massive hole.

I chalk that one up to experience, but wonder if he was a little to close to the line of scrimmage.  I don't know enough about Defensive schemes and alignment to make that call

He got a Tackle (playing TE) on him and got sealed off pretty good.

It is running plays like this where I wouldn't mind seeing us try a defensive alignment  with Roh, MM, VB and Banks on the line with Demens, Obi and Mouton at LB's, against some of the upcoming "smash mouth" running offenses coming up in the B10.

I don't remember about Johnson, Herron, or Demens. But I do remember Talbott getting some playing time. I was drinking the whole second half so I don't really remember who was in other than the starters. Black also played quite a bit more than I thought he would.

I saw Carvin, Talbott, and Avery play. I did not see herron play at all, and I heard Demens named mentioned once. I did not see much of Cullen Christian either.

Carvin, Talbott, and Avery all played often.  I got the feeling IU was picking on Talbott throughout the game.  I saw JB Fitzgerald in for a couple of plays midway through the first half but didn't notice him after that.  Jibreel Black also got numerous snaps.  Demens was in for our goalline situation at the end of the half, and assisted on a tackle.

I don't know whether it will eventually amount to anything but it does seem like our young secondary is at least getting game-time experience. Since we are not losing anybody from the group (except Rogers) - hopefully next year all this experience will bear fruit.

Remember that Denard was also not meeting expectations except a few sparks here and there last year. Players make their best improvement between their Fr and So years - so - well - future does look better on Defense.

I find it strange that Carvin ended up the starter out of camp.  While Thomas Gordon isnt setting the world on fire or anything he has been decent enough and seems way less prone to errors than Carvin has in his twoish games so far.  With Carvin being a true freshman this of course makes a lot of sense, its just a bit odd that instead of letting him develop in a backup role that coaches put him ahead of Gordon was he hasnt really looked like that is the case.

Despite the one stupid penalty I think the UFR is going to reflect that Jibreel Black did contribute somewhat positively to the game.

Talbott was the guy stuck 1 on 1 with Belcher when they ran trips to one side and each time, Belcher owned him.  Belcher is 6 foot 6 and has great hands, so you can't really blame Talbott too much.

That all being said, not much silver lining to find defensively from this last week's performance, except that our defense was on the field 42 minutes and we still won.

Carvin was playing a little tenative, and was taken out.

Thomas Gordon was put in, and he was missing tackles on screens and struggling as well. I'm not really too worried about it, because the entire defense was bad, and these guys are freshmen. It happens.

Although it does not tell you how much each guy was in, shortly after each game the mgoblue.com site gives a player participation report that shows who started at each position and who subbed in at each position.  A list of everyone that participated on special teams is listed separately.

Here is the report from the Indiana game http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/100210aaa.html
