Diag Vandalism

Submitted by MGoAndy on
A buddy of mine told me a couple days ago that the Block M in the Diag was missing. Turns out someone tried to pry it out of the ground, but only managed to make minor damage. The M was removed for repairs, and should be back soon. The question seems to be - Sparty or drunken M Frat boys? http://www.ur.umich.edu/0809/Aug17_09/44.php

What they do avoid is effort. As a fraternity member while on campus, I will say things get stolen, but they are small and easily returnable. 99.9% of all fraternity guys wouldn't deface such a symbolic piece of the school, much less put the effort in to move such a largely-stationary object. Instead, they would focus on stupid things like furniture, plaques, pictures, and dry erase board markers. Case in point, my entire undergrad time I talked about removing ADPi's lion from their front yard and placing it somewhere openly obvious. There is no way I'd ever do it though as 1) that's probably some high level of buglary 2) that thing would be so hard to move it wouldn't be worth the effort.

I agree- I was also in a Fraternity during my time there and stealing the M would never have happened. Aside from that taking waaay too much effort, none of us would ever have defaced an important university symbol. We may have been drunken idiots but we had a lot of school pride, too.

i aggree with FA that we are far too lazy to do something that hard plus i personally respect that M .... furthermore if frat boys did steal/vandalize it is generally aimed at the other greeks on campus and generally is made out to be a joke ... like the lion example ... furthermore i think this crime should be punishable by a tar and feathering to take place the week of the state game

But I'd doubt it was a fraternity thing. Mainly because students aren't on campus right now. And they're students. Male students who tend to have an inordinate amount of school pride. HowEVA, it could be a Sparty fraternity prank. Now that I'd buy.

Did anyone see the story on channel 4 during the 6pm news last night? They made it seem like the M had in fact been stolen, then interviewed some students about it. They didn't say it had been removed for repairs until after they went back to the newscaster in the studio. Theybfreaked me out for a few minutes.

I hope thats not some guy in a snow plow truck with some diabolical plan to strip family values from the entire team and use the stolen property to stroke his genius.

Alright, I'm late to this party, I know, but I feel the need to comment, since I've invested a lot into that tarnished old M. As an ROTC cadet during my four years at UM, I spent countless hours polishing that thing, which was fun, since it only took two days of people walking on it to undo the work, haha. Then I proceeded to propose to my then-GF on it, which worked out great since, now, I score free points every time they show it on TV while we are watching a football game (win!). All I can say is that I'm very relieved that the vandals failed to pry it completely off and steal it. I may have had to go on a personal man-hunt. I look forward to seeing a repaired and polished-up diag M on TV this Saturday!
