Diabetes leads to foot amputation for Iowa DC Parker

Submitted by bamill010 on

Doctors have amputated the right foot of Iowa defensive coordinator Norm Parker, who is battling complications from diabetes. That doesn't mean he won't be back for the Hawkeyes - maybe even this season.

Coach Kirk Ferentz said Wednesday that Parker's foot was amputated about two weeks ago. It's unlikely Parker will return for Iowa's next game, against Michigan on Oct. 17, but he could be back by the end of the year.

I knew that he had been in the hospital but I had no idea it was that bad. Read more.

All the best in your recovery.  Diabetes is a true enemy to us all - I've lost two Uncles and one Aunt to this disease.  Get well for yourself and for your family!

I am 30 now, this is scary shit. Luckily for me I take good care of myself, but dude I could see this someday being me. I wish you the best Norm Parker.

Not to turn this into a long back and forth but... You got it when you were 13? How was that transition of lifestyles, if you can remember back to then at all. I've had it since age 1 so I don't know anything else, and always figured people who got it in that stage would have serious trouble adjusting and taking proper care.

I continued to drink regular pop and eat anything I wanted for about 2 years after I was diagnosed. The turning point came when a friend of the family who happend to work in a dialysis unit, walked me through it. It was horrible.

From that day forward, I thought I'm not gonna be that guy. I still have moments of irresponsibility but I keep my HA1C under 7 so hopefully I won't be losing any limbs or making any trips to the dialysis units any time soon.

Okay, I mean I read it the First time it was posted.

At least this thread doesn't have a naked man with his thang just hanging out there when I'm at work like the last duplicate thread I saw did.....
