God told him to decommit? This explains recent Michigan football struggles.

Yeah, well, he needs at least one middle finger to flip people off.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:26 PM ^
if he ends up at Notre Dame.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:52 PM ^
If Paul Chryst isn't coaching Notre Dame it means nothing.
Now if Messiah plays for Chryst, we have something up in Madison!
January 27th, 2015 at 10:17 PM ^
Not mad at all. His offers aren't exactly impressive. Much better options out there now that we have a coach who actually knows what he's doing when it comes to QBs.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:30 PM ^
When you commit that early to a school like Michigan, your offer sheet isn't going to be very good.
Happens all the time, especially with QBs, because the popular thing now is for the QB to commit early, then be the leader in getting everyone else to commit. A ton of them are EE too. A lot of times when the major schools get their junior QB, everyone else just turns elsewhere.
Me personally, I figured Harbaugh would stick with Malzone this year and then go get someone else along with DeWeaver next year and see if Messiah stayed with his pledge. Regardless, I figured we'd take 2 next year.
Now with Gentry (who I love), we're back on track of taking 1 QB per year. So IMO, this was a matter of Gentry over DeWeaver...because I always thought we were taking a top QB next year along with Messiah.
Best of luck to him. Maybe he can land at UF with Nussmeier.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:36 PM ^
Is Gentry not 2015? I could have sworn he was.
January 27th, 2015 at 11:33 PM ^
Gentry is 2015. Get it together Yost

January 28th, 2015 at 12:17 AM ^
That's not my point.
January 28th, 2015 at 12:23 AM ^
My point was...
In my mind...Michigan always had Malzone and a top QB in 2016 to be named later.
I assumed when Harbaugh was hired that deWeaver would be the third QB in that TWO year period.
However, when we got Gentry...in my mind, that took deWeaver's spot as the 3rd QB between 2015 and 2016.
Now who knows, Harbaugh may take 2 in 2016, but I've always thought #1 Malzone, #2 top QB in 2016, #3 deWeaver...and that was it for the 2 years. Add in Gentry and he takes deWeaver's hypothetical "spot."
In the end, let's add that top 2016 QB (who was never deWeaver) and call it a day. Morris, Speight, Malzone, Gentry and one more guy is solid going into 2016.
January 28th, 2015 at 6:08 AM ^
Harbaugh took 2 QBs per class every year he was at Stanford. Can't imagine that will change here.

January 28th, 2015 at 9:18 AM ^
If Harbaugh takes 2 QB's per class, he will have 8-10 QB's on the roster. That's way too many scholarships tied up in one position - especially when QB is not a position where you shuttle players in/out of the game.
One QB per class is about right unless Harbaugh can get two 4 or 5 star rated QB's in a class like this year.
January 28th, 2015 at 9:22 AM ^
But he won't end up with that many. Guys will transfer, change positions, graduate early and move on, etc. For example, someone like Bellomy could move along somewhere before his fourth or fifth year comes, and a guy like Gentry (though not necessarily Gentry himself) could play tight end if he's not going to be The Man.
January 28th, 2015 at 9:37 AM ^
had 8-10 QBs on his rosters at Stanford? It's just funny to hear you say that what was he was doing was wrong for some reason that no one would ever overlook.

I think this move has more to do with Harbaugh laying out exactly what he's looking for in a QB to DeWeaver and mutually going separate ways.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:21 PM ^
How does Eason from Washington state commit to Georgia of all places. He's the #1 overall player in the country. Doesn't make sense..
January 27th, 2015 at 10:21 PM ^
yes best possible news here folks (although it might not look like it now)
January 27th, 2015 at 10:23 PM ^
Apparently Harbaugh felt that one Messiah in Ann Arbor was enough!
January 27th, 2015 at 10:25 PM ^
Messiah talked to God? I'm so confused.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:28 PM ^
God must have told DeWeaver that he wouldn't be able to get into Michigan without football.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:25 PM ^
Eason come on down please interesting on how harbaugh had talked to Eason then messiah...................draw your own conclusions
January 27th, 2015 at 10:27 PM ^
We'll have better options with Harbaugh in charge. This was one of Hoke's recruits, plus he was a shaky commit since he visited MSU in December.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:27 PM ^
I don't understand why some of these recruits commit so damn early. Why rush the process (when literally anything can happen) only to decommit?
Not trying to knock this kid in particular. Best of luck to Messiah!
January 28th, 2015 at 9:33 AM ^
If it was a mistake to commit too soon, it was also a mistake to decommit so soon. Being a Michigan commit brought him more attention and made him more attractive.
A committment to Harbaugh is like the Good Housekeeping seal of approval for QB's. A lot of other coaches will want what Harbaugh has.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:28 PM ^
That he doesn't much care for football. More of a boxing fan really. Although he does root for Michigan during The Game.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:30 PM ^
I feel for the guy ... he had locked onto a dream and held onto it through all the coaching change turmoil. His tweet has a certain -- what? ... sad? poignant? -- feel to it.
The good news -- he's got a year to find another team where he can live his dream. I suspect he'll land on his feet. Best of luck to him.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:36 PM ^
I don't feel bad for him--he didn't have to decommit. He's a top-250 player so I'm sure he won't have any trouble finding another place to play.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:39 PM ^
Just asking if you have other info that's not in this thread. I dont know what the converstaion was. I imagine it could've gone the same way the Brandon 'resignation' went.
January 27th, 2015 at 11:17 PM ^
No, I don't know. I posted my comment without really considering the alternative you raised.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:56 PM ^
It is that if this was a dream for him... Well, then he should not be visiting other schools... I am not saying that he is not allowed to but if it was his dream... Well, he could have done an Alex Malzone and not visit... At the end, it is the past and moving on..
January 27th, 2015 at 10:30 PM ^
I would expect/hope that JH told Mr. DeWeaver that they plan to take a second QB in 2016 and he decided that's not what he wanted. I wouldn't mind Eason but like the thought of getting Costello and the top 50 receiver on his team that want to go to school together.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:48 PM ^
they aren't on the same team just really bonded at michigan's camp last summer
January 27th, 2015 at 11:01 PM ^
Sorry about that, made an assumption when I saw "JH visits Costello and xyz" on 247
January 27th, 2015 at 11:13 PM ^
nothing to be sorry about lol I thought the same thing at first just thought you would want to know
January 27th, 2015 at 10:40 PM ^
Kid committed to UofM when he got an offer. He stayed publicly committed through this last miserable season and when the coach he committed to got fired. A lot of the above posts seem kinda off.
I think context is important here and we don't have much. If it was anything other than "We're going to continue to recruit another QB in your class because we want 2 QBs in your class," then I don't like this. Being scared off (e.g. LAYING DOWN THE LAW) and calling 'take-backs' (We didn't offer. Hoke did.) are not a good look to me. I don't know what happened, but I'm not willing to say, "Who cares? We're hot now."
January 27th, 2015 at 10:42 PM ^
Why is it not a good look to tell a commit that unlike the prior head coach, you don't think they would be the best fit for the program? It's more than a year away from signing day 2016. DeWeaver has plenty of time to find another program.
January 27th, 2015 at 10:50 PM ^
What are they selling these recruits on? Probably a pretty rare combination of athletics and academics. The kid took what he thought was a good faith aggrement that if he kept his nose clean and grades up, then he could go to Michigan.
I wouldn't like it. I'd get over it. HOWEVA, I also wouldn't be saying "Who care? HARBAUGH!" Just me?
January 27th, 2015 at 10:52 PM ^
So a player can flip flop before sighing day but a new coach can't tell a kid he's not a good fit?

A recruit can do whatever the hell he wants. It's the biggest deciscion these kids have ever made. A few of their lives depend on it and many more lives are greatly altered by making the right one. Coaches are multimillionaires with highly glorified jobs and 85 scholarship athletes.
Plus, most of the signing day drama isn't dramatic for the coaches.
January 27th, 2015 at 11:04 PM ^
So JH is making a biggest decision that will affect his tenure if the team does not perform well. I find your point is a bit one sided.. Again, if he is committed... He should not be visiting other campus and schools if he believed Michigan was his dream school. DeWeaver's past month of activity seem to show that his desire with Michigan was not as big as it was when he committed. Again, things changed and I have seen recruits change their mind.. Guess what? coaches could do the same as long as it is done clearly, early, and hopefully mutual. At the end, it is what it is
January 27th, 2015 at 11:01 PM ^
Again, a good faith agreement goes both way.. If he was really committed to Michigan, then visiting a rivalry is not what I would consider a good faith.. At the end, he has the right to do that but to state that it was not a good faith agreement from Michigan seems a bit one sided
January 27th, 2015 at 11:10 PM ^
You know that's when that happened, right? One-sided is exactly what I would call DI football scholarships. It's decidely the other way though.
January 27th, 2015 at 11:21 PM ^
The scholarship is not from one particular coach.. It is from the University of Michigan.. You know that right?
If he didn't like the situation, he could just decommit then and move on.. But what he did was not that and decided to visit other schools.. Again, that shows commitment right? Look, I am not here to argue if it is right or wrong.. At the end, if it was his dream to go to Michigan, his action would be that clear.. It was clear that visiting other school show he could not be as committed as he was.. Though coaching is a relationship and football is a business of relationship, scholarship is from the school (hence, people consider another school when coach moves to another school).. Is that unfair for the original school? Yes.. But it happens and part of recruiting.. You can't take it one side and then argue the other when it happens both ways.
January 28th, 2015 at 10:19 AM ^
If Harbaugh knows DeWeaver won't fit his plans as well, and probably has a limited chance to win the starting spot, it's just honest to let Messiah know that and that it would probably be good for him to look at other schools he may want to play at where he has a better chance of playing. It's almost definitely the better option for the player in the long run.
