With <1000 hours to go until UConn, does anybody have new information on whether Gardner will be redshirted this year? I suppose he'll play if Tate or Denard goes down (knock on wood), but will he play any garbage time or come in for any special situations?
Devin Gardners situation with <1000 hours to kickoff?
Unless one of the aforementioned quarterbacks gets injured for an extended time, I'm thinking he'll probably redshirt. No new info though.
Hopefully he'll redshirt and be a big part of the 2011 NC team in our unprecedented tri-QB set.
will be the first team to win a NC, using 3 QBs in an extensive playing time. Sweet, Michigan will have set the gold standard of being able to use 3 QBs and still win the NC. Let see how other team can beat that with 4 QBs!
He's probably doing better than you if you're that detailed on your Countdown to Kickoff.
This does not have to be decided before the start of the season. If both sophomore quarterbacks stay healthy he will undoubtedly watch, learn, and redshirt. That will give him two full seasons as starter after Forcier and Robinson graduate - exactly the progression you want. The future seems bright indeed.
Exactly - it's not like one has to declare that they are redshirting by a certain date.
The way this coaching staff goes - the best player will play. I don't think anything has been decided yet, especially with fall camp still a few weeks away. They'll assess his improvement and play in fall camp and most likely make a tentative decision there.
My gut/brain tells me redshirt - but the coaches I'm sure are still looking at him at least as a potential starter, albeit a longshot.
The best players will play
REDSHIRT.... sorry for yelling
I think he made it to campus
As nice as it is to preserve a guy's eligibility, it's also great to have a deep bench full of experience. If the staff is really high on Gardner maybe we will get a peek of him during the UMass or BG games.
The real question is if we will see any of Jack Kennedy this year! I hope so.
I am a new member, BTW, please be gentle!
The flip side of that argument is that if you play him this year, you'll have three talented QBs within a year's eligibility of each other, which could potentially increase the chances of a transfer. Also, the third-string QB generally doesn't see much playing time in any event, so he wouldn't be likely to gain much real game experience. Some argue that even garbage-time game experience is worth it, but I don't know if I really buy that.
You do realize that it doesn't have to be decided before the season starts if he will be redshirted or not, right?
While that is technically true, given that we're going to play two cupcakes during September (UMass and BG) we pretty much have to decide before then whether or not we plan to redshirt Gardner.
Devin and the team will be best served if Devin redshirts this season and spends next season as 3rd string QB. A couple of formative seasons getting the system and fundamentals ingrained, would be just what the doctor ordered, for this kid.
I think Devin has NFL talent, but it ain't happening overnight. Go back and watch Devin in the state championship game and you will see a kid who needs time to mature and improve.
Michael Vick, one of the best college players I have ever seen, somehow redshirted. If Vick can redshirt anybody can.
It would have been great if Tate could have redshirted last season or been brought along patiently, unfortunately for Tate he was thrown directly into the fire. It was not fair to Tate, but he performed admirably.
I think in his situation he should definately redshirt, he wouldn't get enough playtime this year for it to be worth losing a year of eligibilty.
