This is fantastic news.
Huge news, great for the program going forward and for Shane's development. Can't wait to see DG lead this offense for 2 years. GoBlue!
Great for Devin, as well.
"Adding insult to injury, Rich Rodriguez foolishly burned Gardner's redshirt after Tate Forcier was temporarily demoted to third string, to punish him for a lackluster effort in off-season work-outs. Gardner played a total of three snaps in two games when Robinson was briefly sidelined, plus garbage time against Bowling Green.
At this writing, it is still unclear if Gardner can obtain a medical hardship waiver for an alleged back injury that he suffered midway through his freshman year. I am not sure how serious that back injury was. By the time of Michigan's bowl game, Forcier had already flunked out of school. Gardner made the trip to Jacksonville and would presumably have played if Robinson had been forced out of the game.
Should Gardner be unable to secure a fifth year, his lost freshman season is probably the worst burned redshirt currently on the team, and one of the dumbest ever."
So, uh, there
is that isn't that, anymore. And I don't think that Rich Rodriguez is going to "face the fanbase" much anymore. Not this fanbase, anyway. God knows what he must think of this fanbase.
So just another MGoFreakout for nothing. Nothing other than the usual Rodriguez defamation.
"Should Gardner be unable to secure a fifth year, his lost freshman season is probably the worst burned redshirt currently on the team, and one of the dumbest ever."
Raising a hypothetical situation is a pretty fair point. It WOULD have been a terribly stupid burning of a redshirt. Michigan fans and the coaching staff have been wondering for a few years whether he would get a fifth year or not.
The fanbase wasn't freaking out for nothing. Sometimes there are freakouts for no reason, but there was genuine concern. Rich Rodriguez couldn't coach a lick of defense and lost 22 games in three years. He also burned William Campbell's redshirt for no reason the year before. He recruited a bunch of washouts in the class of of 2010. We're not talking badly about Rodriguez because he has an accent. We're saying bad things about him because he failed.
You aren't actually Rich Rodriguez, are you?
Honestly . . . some of you guys need therapy to get over the man already.
Isn't it a little hypocritical of you to open the can and then complain about the worms inside?
I don't think RR really gives a crap at this point how Michigan fans think about how he handled Gardner's redshirt.
Dude, you introduced RR into the discussion, so why are you shocked that Section 1 would get involved? Not to mention that he's essentially agreeing with you here.
Just because I am that kind of guy, this is just another chance to repeat the essential fact; that as is always the case nowadays, it is the Rodriguez-haters who bring up the topic of "Rich Rodriquez." Without fail. I'd be surprised if anybody can find a thread in a year's time where I have mentioned Coach Rodriguez's name, when it wasn't underneath another preceding post attacking him.
So there. Yeah. Another mention of Rodriguez. Argument started. And finished. Thank you all very little.
you know you are the single greatest reason for my disdain toward Rich Rodriguez...just saying
And quite honestly, Rich Rodriguez's situation is the only thing that has seriously damaged my love for my university. I attributed the basketball fiasco to the guilty parties themselves -- Ed Martin and a handful of others -- because the institution was mostly blameless. There have been the assorted semi-regular political kerfuffles attendant to an institution that is so large and so p-c. But nothing that would shake my faith in my alma mater.
That is, until Rodriguez, and Rosenberg (and his friends) and the Free Press, and the institutional cowardice and back-biting; I was always essentially proud of Michigan.
It's just one thing, but it was a bad one. Sunlight is the best disinfectant for one bad thing.
Cot damn, this back and forth bellyaching you do about him is ridiculous.
And you're making it worse by replying to someone whenever they mention the village idiot's name.
Justs recently where His Dudeness brought up Rich in a bellyaching comparison to Hoke. Or just ignored it so you could insist your false premise was true.
Even if it was in this case.
But I'll have a stern talk with all of the boys at the next meeting of the RichRod Fan Club in the basement of the golf course club house. And remind them that M-Wolverine is monitoring all digital communication.
You said it was a fact that it's always RR haters that do. That's not true. In fact-
So you keep saying that, but it's NOT true. (You might want to have a talk with this guy at your next meeting).
Whether you have ever brought it up, that's mostly true. I'm sure a search would find a case or two where you insinuated about how the previous staff was treated into something that had nothing to do with it, but the vast majority of the time you're taking the bait someone else left and going from there. Whether you should take the bait or not is another story, but you are usually responding to someone else. That we agree on.
I don't see how this is a "good aspect" of Rodriguez's tenure here. He played Gardner when he was a true freshman and not ready to play. Gardner made no real impact that season, playing just a handful of snaps. We didn't win any games because he was out there. And whatever lesson he was trying to impart to Tate Forcier didn't seem to get through either, given that Forcier was off the team a couple months later. You're making it sound like Rodriguez's decision to play him is vindicated. I think it still looks like a poor decision, but it fortunately isn't going to haunt us.
I see the decision as being akin to throwing a pass into double-coverage that gets picked off, only to be ruled incomplete following video review. We were bailed out by the zebras.
Wait, thisis kinda a smart post, why is this moderated?
Beat me to it!
This is awesome news. This helps everyone involved and almost assures Shane redshirting. Party hard!
Good. No. Great. Absolutely great.
Best news of the day easily.
I am pleased by this.
...but has anyone heard if he was granted his medical redshirt yet?!?!?!
I like the video interview with Gardner. I'll miss the hell out of Denard's infectious enthusiasm, but Gardner seems like a cool dude with a great attitude and a great head on his shoulders. Here's hoping for two big years from him.
Exactly what we need to continue the momentum.
Great news! After watching Devin's play last year I can't wait to see him for the next two years. Look forward to his continued growth and success.
Muppets, Upton, the whole bit. Even though it was expected, this is wonderful wonderful news!
Happy Tuesday! Thank you for not sucking for once in your life, NCAA.
this sums up many's thoughts I assume
I love his potential and his attitude. He just seems like a smart guy and obviously is a team player. Two more years of DG is good for the program on so many levels. Go Blue!
Awesome news! and now our depth chart is back to normal after this year too.
Loved what I saw out of Gardner last year and I think he'll benefit as he gets more experience in the starting role. Him getting an extra year definitely helps our depth problems and it'll allow Shane to mature and learn in the meantime. I'm not sure what Gardner can become as a quarterback, but I feel like has a lot of potential because he can do anything you ask him to do. This is TREMENDOUS news!
It's actually the best thing that could happen to Speight as well if you think about it. Now coming off his (presumed) redshirt year he gets an equal opportunity to earn the starting job in a straight up QB competition instead of being entrenched behind a guy with a year of starting experience.
Which is good for competition and depth, which is really good for UM. Plus, Bellomy will still be there as a RS Senior with lots of time in the system.
Great news for the team and for DG. Finally the NCAA gets something right.
That's pretty nifty I guess.
Watch, now he's going to leave early after this year.
If he wins the Heisman or a NC, I think everyone would be okay with that.
Hell. I'd be happy with a big ten championship.
I have to think that Gardner can be quite a bit better than the high level of QB he played at last year, with his focus at the position for 2 more years. I like the fact that Morris should be able to redshirt next year, barring catastrophe!
This is excellent in terms of offensive installation. Two years with Gardner should give us an excellent idea of how the overall offense is progressing and if we need to stay the course or go raid AA Torch and Pitchfork. 2014 will now be a year where we field a senior QB, a stable offensive line, and a second year Derrick Green as opposed to yet another year of QB transition.
Don't forget a junior Devin Funchess. That offense will be the real deal.
Does this qualify for a Kate Upton gif? I vote yes
His last regular season game vs OSU at the Shoe, with Harris (???) at wideout, plus the most offensive offensive line ever, plus the defense with all these recruits and maybe Malik and Hand rotating in and out with the rest, plus Green in his 2d year of the office....
Geez that should be fun to watch.
Not sure whether to go with Beaker ode to joy or get all Upton in here...I guess I'll just go with...
It's great! To be! A Michigan Wolverine!
This is TREMENDOUS news. Long awaited. I hope Devin can really take a step this year and become a good quarterback. Loved what I saw in the limited time last year. I honestly think he is going to be really good. He was one of the most talented qbs to come out of high school in his recruiting class and this is the first year he KNOWS the job can be his. It has to feel good knowing your the guy and Denard isn't in front of you. I expect big things this year from him.
and if he has a good year in 2013 and continues to progress through the next offseason being pushed by Morris and Bellomy(spelling?).....Holy Shit will I be excited for 2014!!!!!!!!!! The defense will make so many oppurtunities for the offense to have the ball. I dont even know what i'd be more excited about RS Senior Devin Gardner or the 2014 Defense
....I do believe the future just got even brighter in Ann Arbor, and it is pretty bright as it is. If Devin can put in a full season of his average performance in those last four games, and then another season, improving all the while...that is awesome for this offense. I believe the first round of drinks will go on my tab, now that I can fake having the corporate card here.
Kiss your win streak in Columbus goodbye Buckeyes. Our FIFTH YEAR SENIOR Quarterback is going to end that long-overdue nonsense in 2014.
QB depth & experience. How long ago and far away 2008 seems now.........
I blame Brandon. Hoke can't recruit.
It'll be great having yet another year of Devin at the helm, and for our depth to build behind him. Russell, Shane, and Wilson could use an extra year to develop.
6 to Midnight
This is huuuuge news for us gents...I feel like this almsot deserves a hello post haha.
I really like what I saw out of DG last year. I think his ability to actually scramble (sorry Denard :( ) will make life on our young recievers a bit easier in the early stages of the year as it will create space between the front and back zones
It'll be nice to be on the side of having the guy who's seemingly been around for eight years.
Good for Devin. An already bright looking future in Ann Arbor just got even brighter.
As a bonus, Shane may now have two years to get up to speed. Granted, we don't know what Devin will do after next year, but I'd love to see Shane redshirt this year, then start getting some snaps (probably mop-up duty) in 2014.
the dude is a smoove mofo - check the duds and the shades in the pic with harris. how can this not be good for recruiting?
But does this make UM less attractive to a top 2015 QB recruit?
Assuming Shane is a RS this year (no guarantee), his logical starting years would be 2015-2017.
Speight (again, assuming a RS) would be the starter in 2018 only.
A top 2015 QB would then only have 2019 as his starting year.
I know top prospects are not afraid to compete with anyone, but the roster may not give a top recruit early playing time, which seems to be a common reason cited by prospects for selecting a school.
I don't see how Gardner getting his redshirt would affect a 2015 quarterback. The new guy would be a true freshman sitting on the bench behind Bellomy/Morris/Speight anyway.
I wouldn't assume Speight starts. And odds are at some point someone transfers. Don't worry about it.
This is wonderful.
lizard brain saw Devin Gardner but read Denard Robinson and i thought your a second i was dreaming. And then i realized i was. Irregardlessly, rejoice!
On the air crying about it being unfair. Also they're not worried because "Urban and the Buckeyes will wipe the floor with them (Michigan)."
Screw Ohio. Go Blue! Great news!
are they not worried, or are they crying?
I don't always become confused. But, when I do, it's because I am trying to understand a Buckeye.
Stay out of Ohio my friends.
Gardner's ceiling is ridiculous. He is a gamer and if he makes even moderate progress over the next two years, will be an absolute terror for B1G defences. Outside of maybe landing Hand, this news is far bigger than any Hello post we could have gotten.
This sentiment exactly.
I am treating this news as a bonus 2014 commitment and am celebrating accordingly. From both an offensive continuity and QB development standpoint (allowing Morris and Speight to take their time developing, barring unfortunate injuries), the Gardner redshirt is a huge deal.
Disappointed. This meme after three years has now come to an end.
Don't worry, now we can have the weekly debate on if Devin will go pro early. I am guessing that will be a weekly thread - good game will have panic that he will go pro and if Morris will be ready, bad game will have "I told you so" threads on why he isn't a pro QB.
Might help in recruitment of D. Harris also, should now be able to bring better quality receivers all around.
Two Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors in just 5 career starts!?! Yes, sir, I will have some more!
Honest question: Do you think he will be better than Morris? Or just excited that he gets two years? Usually those high profile guys like Morris don't want to wait until they're juniors to see the field/redshirt? Just curious.
ESPN 4* (81) 128 overall 5 QB
Rivals 4* (5.9) 132 overall 1 QB
Scout 5* 37 overall 5 QB
ESPN 4* (84) 127 overall 3 QB
Rivals 4* (6.0) 81 overall 4 QB
Scout 5* 24 overall 3 QB
So I'd say they're pretty evenly hyped, although I know Morris took a bit of a dip at the end of the cycle that probably would have given him a halfway decent edge.
The question is will RS Senior Gardner be > RS Freshman Morris?
The answer is "yes."
USC recruits one great QB after the other, and they wait.
Rod scored when it comes to QB recruiting. Glad Tate losing his wings didn't cost Devin his redshirt.
Hell.... This is heroin worthy.
I used to do a little but a little wouldn't do so a little got more and more.
solidifies that position, and allows us to go into 2014 with a very solid team led by a senior instead of a freshman.
Here for the posbang!
DG to DG for two years. DG^2 at QB and RB.
Scholarship counts for 2014. One less from an already small class.
Am I too late for the posbang?
RE: Should we be concerned about Shane Morris wanting PT? I think not. We don't want to be in a situation where true (or even redshirt) freshman are getting significant PT at QB, that's a recipe for disaster in most instances. Morris can redshirt this season, backup Gardner in 2014, and have 2015, 2016, and 2017 to go wild.
Best text I got today.
Not a bad week in Michigan athletics.
Since Devin just received his fifth year and is graduating in May 2013. Should we worry about Wisconsin trying to sway him to be their qb in 2014? Everybody know that is how they get their qbs.
He's gone after 2013 regardless.
/ national championship'd
no field is required.
That's great thinking right there.
