Devin Gardner granted medical redshirt
Which is good for competition and depth, which is really good for UM. Plus, Bellomy will still be there as a RS Senior with lots of time in the system.
Great news for the team and for DG. Finally the NCAA gets something right.
Fantastic!
If he wins the Heisman or a NC, I think everyone would be okay with that.
I have to think that Gardner can be quite a bit better than the high level of QB he played at last year, with his focus at the position for 2 more years. I like the fact that Morris should be able to redshirt next year, barring catastrophe!
but what about the Spanish Channel News Team?
This is excellent in terms of offensive installation. Two years with Gardner should give us an excellent idea of how the overall offense is progressing and if we need to stay the course or go raid AA Torch and Pitchfork. 2014 will now be a year where we field a senior QB, a stable offensive line, and a second year Derrick Green as opposed to yet another year of QB transition.
His last regular season game vs OSU at the Shoe, with Harris (???) at wideout, plus the most offensive offensive line ever, plus the defense with all these recruits and maybe Malik and Hand rotating in and out with the rest, plus Green in his 2d year of the office....
Geez that should be fun to watch.
This is TREMENDOUS news. Long awaited. I hope Devin can really take a step this year and become a good quarterback. Loved what I saw in the limited time last year. I honestly think he is going to be really good. He was one of the most talented qbs to come out of high school in his recruiting class and this is the first year he KNOWS the job can be his. It has to feel good knowing your the guy and Denard isn't in front of you. I expect big things this year from him.
and if he has a good year in 2013 and continues to progress through the next offseason being pushed by Morris and Bellomy(spelling?).....Holy Shit will I be excited for 2014!!!!!!!!!! The defense will make so many oppurtunities for the offense to have the ball. I dont even know what i'd be more excited about RS Senior Devin Gardner or the 2014 Defense
....I do believe the future just got even brighter in Ann Arbor, and it is pretty bright as it is. If Devin can put in a full season of his average performance in those last four games, and then another season, improving all the while...that is awesome for this offense. I believe the first round of drinks will go on my tab, now that I can fake having the corporate card here.
Kiss your win streak in Columbus goodbye Buckeyes. Our FIFTH YEAR SENIOR Quarterback is going to end that long-overdue nonsense in 2014.
QB depth & experience. How long ago and far away 2008 seems now.........
It'll be great having yet another year of Devin at the helm, and for our depth to build behind him. Russell, Shane, and Wilson could use an extra year to develop.
This is huuuuge news for us gents...I feel like this almsot deserves a hello post haha.
I really like what I saw out of DG last year. I think his ability to actually scramble (sorry Denard :( ) will make life on our young recievers a bit easier in the early stages of the year as it will create space between the front and back zones
It'll be nice to be on the side of having the guy who's seemingly been around for eight years.
Great news!
As a bonus, Shane may now have two years to get up to speed. Granted, we don't know what Devin will do after next year, but I'd love to see Shane redshirt this year, then start getting some snaps (probably mop-up duty) in 2014.
the dude is a smoove mofo - check the duds and the shades in the pic with harris. how can this not be good for recruiting?
But does this make UM less attractive to a top 2015 QB recruit?
Assuming Shane is a RS this year (no guarantee), his logical starting years would be 2015-2017.
Speight (again, assuming a RS) would be the starter in 2018 only.
A top 2015 QB would then only have 2019 as his starting year.
I know top prospects are not afraid to compete with anyone, but the roster may not give a top recruit early playing time, which seems to be a common reason cited by prospects for selecting a school.
I don't see how Gardner getting his redshirt would affect a 2015 quarterback. The new guy would be a true freshman sitting on the bench behind Bellomy/Morris/Speight anyway.
Teams don't sign top flight QBs on an annual basis so if the '15 class doesn't have one, why worry? Worst case scenario is they get a quality backup in '15 and make QB a priority in '16.
I think you've missed the joy in this announcement by overthinking it.
We had Gardner, Denard and Tata at one point and look at our depth issues last year @ Nebraska. I'm not happy unless we have 3 elite QBs, and then, you risk the transfer or college baseball bug biting you in the ass. (Henson>Navarre, Richard>Guiterrez>Henne).
Screw Ohio. Go Blue! Great news!
