Devin Gardner off day....but still scores 4 TDs

I work in downtown Detroit and when I noticed Mr. Gardner would be playing a mere 5 miles away at Highland Park, I figured I would head over and check him out. Not until this morning did I realize the game was at 4:00 and not 7:00, so I took a little time off work and made it for the beginning of the game. I arrived at about 4:10 just in time to see a 10 yard TD pass from DG on the first drive of the game. These are his unofficial stats for the game (and mind you, this is minus any yardage he accrued on Inkster's first drive before that 10 yd TD pass): Passing: 9-16 for 124 yards, 2 TDs and 2 interceptions Rushing (including sacks): 10 rushes for 91 yards and 2 TDs Gardner accounted for all 4 of Inkster's TDs and they won the game 27-22. My notes from the game: -Gardner was sacked 3 times for -6 yards (included in my numbers) -Gardner had a pass to a wide open TE for a 2 point conversion that was similar to the QB sneak-jump pass that Tebow has thrown before. -Gardner was intercepted both times by the same player from Highland Park. On the first INT, Gardner was being pressured and threw off his back foot. His receiver had a step on the defender but Gardner underthrew him. On the 2nd INT, the kid made a diving catch to pick him off. It was a great play for the defender. -DG should have had 2 more TDs and 1 less INT. Gardner had a beautiful pass that should have been a 41 yard over the shoulder catch for a TD but his WR alligator-armed it and it dropped 2 feet in front of him. Also, right before his 2nd INT, he had a 3 yd TD run in which he dove for the pylon nullified by a holding call. -Gardner looked very comfortable throwing a bubble screen. A flick of the wrist and the ball was in the WRs hands (which bodes well for UM's offense) -Gardner looked like he was athletically on a different level than everyone on the field (which he was). It looked effortless when he ran. He had a 26 yard completion in which he stiff armed a DE to get outside and threw a strike to his WR. He should have been sacked 2 or 3 more times but escaped pressure for small gains. -His TDs were...10 yd TD pass, 19 yd TD pass (RB screen), 19 yd TD run (broken play scramble), and a 28 yd TD run (put a sick juke move on the safety at the 10 yard line and could have moon-walked into the endzone) -In the first half, Inkster did not run a single designed running play for Gardner. Other than being sacked, his only run was the broken play scramble TD. I thought this was odd and maybe he injured a foot, but then in the second half they opened it up and ran quite a few spread option runs (that looked very similar to the ones Denard Robinson runs when he is in the game). My overall impression is that even on an off day (which is what I would say DG had), he was still by far the best player on the field. He looked like a man amongst boys. It will be very interesting next year!

Since you were there, I am curious to know the following: 1) Were the incompletions bad throws/decisions, or drops? 2) Is Inkster run game a read option similar to Michigans? 3) Does he ever play under center? 4) Are there any other players on that team UM ready?

Good questions: 1) A combination of both. A busted screen led to 1 incompletion, a drop led to another, and the aforementioned "alligator-arm" play accounted for another. He completely overthrew (by about 10 yards) a WR streaking down the sideline (had 2 Dlineman pressuring him) and one pass was just out of reach for another WR. That combined with his 2 INT's should be all of his incompletions. One of his completions was a very nice, almost lucky over the shoulder grab, so take that at what it's worth also. 2)I didn't get a chance to see a lot of the blocking schemes for lineman, but the skill positions were all run very similar to UM's read option. Lot's of backs in motion and WRs are required to block quite a bit. In my opinion, in this offense, Gardner is getting a good head start on reading DEs and LBs as he did it the entire 2nd half. I did find it odd that his main RB would stand behind Gardner (in the shotgun) until he could read the defense, then he would pick which side of DG he would line up on. Very interesting. 3)The only play I saw him take under center was the knee he took at the end of the game. Every snap was in the shotgun. 4)The only other player in the game that was possibly UM ready was the kid who picked him off twice from Highland park. He was also the running back on the offense and he had good vision, great cutback ability, speed, and he was tough. He did a bit of dancing around in the backfield, but when he hit the hole, he hit it hard. Inkster had a decent secondary, but none of them I saw had spectacular games.

Tim and I were there. We'll have photos and video up next week. Gardner had an off day in as much as he usually throws for 300+yds and runs for 150+. He was still incredibly dominant.

Yeah, I still can't believe he looked so much better than everyone else on the field. It looked as though he wasn't even trying. I got the feeling that his kid could take it to the house no matter where Inkster was on the field. I didn't mean to imply that he looked bad - he was still light years better than any player on either team (as he will be on most Friday nights).
