The meaning is probably still huge for them. Their team voted that they were the guys that led this team all season, and they earned the honor of being the captains. Who cares if you get to carry the title of captain all year? They still led as captains, and they are being recognized for it. I like the idea of the players having to earn it. Hoke said he did it because there was entitlement. Not sure why anybody has an issue with this, honestly.

...and before people complain about it not happening before the season. Realize that Frank Clark would've likely been a preseason captain.

It didn't work, wasn't the best method, but in the end...it got the correct answer.

Season's over. Coach is fired. Let's move on.

Your first statement is contradicted by the second. You imply picking captains at the end of the year was a good idea because Frank Clark would have been a captain if chosen in the beginning of the year, but then you say that choosing them at the end didn't work and wasn't the best method. So which is it?

a classic Brady Hoke achievement.     naming captains after you have lost your job.

can I get my neg points revoked for being correct about Hoke?  My hundred million neg points came from my stating, after the Bellomy debacle at Nebraska, that Hoke was in over his head.

Jake Ryan is only the 13th player in Michigan history to be named team captain more than once.

The 8th in the last 90 years.

I always liked Hagerup. When everybody was still in their fuck this team, fuck this coach, fuck this staff, fuck this athletic director stuff during the season he wrote an amazing letter to his teammates that I really liked.

Thanks.

Also, this is the last time I'll plug this but PLEASE bookmark and vote every day for Devin Gardner.  The Senior Class award captures who they are off the field, so no need to quibble about what he did or didn't accomplish as quarterback.

Voting closes on the 15th at midnight Central time.  Please help Devin capture the fan vote. He is right, he was all about being the champion and will forever be.  He has gained ground in this poll against several of the challengers but still has a ways to go to catch up to JaCorey Shepherd of Kansas, Ameer Abdullah of Nebraska and Chris Conley of Georgia.  Vote on your home computer, work computer, and any other device you can get to until the 15th.

For posting this. I just voted and only have another hour and ten minutes until AM ET rolls around, when I can vote again. I would vote early and often for Devin. He is a worthy representative of Michigan.

It should have its own separate thread.

And I think you can plug this as many times as you feel like plugging it until someone important tells you to stop.

This team will miss Jake Ryan. He obviously was one of the leaders in the locker room.

I could see Jack Miller being one of the leaders next year. He always seemed to be the one who spoke to the media on behalf of his team after games this year. After some of the bad losses, he was the only player to speak. Plus, he has persevered through some issues on the field and turned into a decent lineman.

I think these are obviously the right guys, but I agree it would have been nice to see at the beginning of the year. Either way, it's an honor to be chosen as a leader by your teammates.

I mean, you have Schlissel and Hackett there with a bunch of the employees they just let go. Glad they could have one last get together as a gang with the players, but it seems uncomfortable

Jake Ryan and Devin Gardner are two incredible young men that we've been fortunate to represent the team we love. They won't soon be forgotten.

I am very glad to hear how our football players got to enjoy their end of year celebration. They deserve a lot of respect for their hard work and perseverence. Even though their efforts did not achieve the level of success we hoped for. The lessons they learned in sports will be with them forever.

Looking forward, we are probably one great coach away from being among the champions again. You can play it straight, enjoy friendships, and still be a winner. Why be in the game unless you are trying your best to win?

I clicked this thread fully intending to leave a snarky anti-Hoke "who cares at this point" comment.  The tweets about the players made me realized that such a comment would have been wrong and, well, just plain mean.  The players obvioulsy care and, at this point, that is all that really matters.  It was a nice way for Devin and Jake to go out.  Good for them.

Regardless of the circumstances this year and without any aspersions to those involved I would hope that Captains are named in a more traditional manner going forward.
