DeVeon Smith Slightly Ahead of Green Coming Out of Spring

Submitted by Space Coyote on

Hoke said today that De"Veon Smith had a bit of an edge over Derrick Green coming out of spring. Reminds that Drake Johnson back

Also, here is says it is mostly because of pass pro.

EDIT:

Per GoBlueinMN below (so give him a +1 for this info below; put in OP to allow discussion) and Nick Baumgardner on twitter, who also explains that others beside Norfleet will get a look at returns because the team must get better, and says Kenny Allen will now do kickoffs:

Hoke says Glasgow is going to play center. Sounded like his shuffling to other spots is going to slow down.

Some folks were posting earlier about Mags at OG.

Not happening - Yes, he did okay last year, but his body type is OT all the way.

OG is usually a thicker type build like Kalis.

OT tackles are longer and leaner for leverage and arm length(pass blocking).

There has been alot of hype with Mags.  I hope he proves Coach Hoke right about him this year.

Both are a toss up, hard to determine with last years line. I thought Green had more burst and was able to make good cuts and perhaps better vision. I think with a solid line, Green is the better runner, IMO.

But I'm curious as to why folks are so adamant about one or the other. The sample size we have to work with is terrible. It's not like they had 200+ carries last year or a consistent O-Line. We honestly have no idea what they're capable of.

during the Spring Game, it was apparent to me - am I the only one? - that De'Veon seemed more difficult to bring down. Granted it was based on a handful of plays and I saw neither run through a massive hole. However, being more difficult to bring down than your backfield might does suggest a better combination of leg strength and balance that should translate into being a better pass blocker, i.e., not getting mowed over on a bull rush. But until I read this, coupled with the photos released of Green recently, it did appear he was putting in the necessary work for improvement this season.  Of course I thought the same in regard to Smith after the Sring Game although no RB impressed enough to make me think he should have a clear edge going into the fall.  But I do think the extra work put into strentgh, i.e., the Green and Countess photos is becoming contagious among teammates.  A good sign.  Not forgetting Jabrill, of course, but I think the NFL scouts were declaring him "physically ready" for the league while still playing h.s. ball.
