Deveon Smith - injured tonight

Submitted by ldoublee on
Tonight, vs Warren Harding, Deveon Smith injured his shoulder in the 1st quarter. He returned for 1 play in the 2nd half, but could not continue. It appeared to be a shoulder injury. In his absence, Howland lost 34-0. No word on his prognosis as of yet.

i was there and brought it up in the cass tech thread.

shoulder injury. had 2 carries (one a complete beast mode 20 yard gain with about 3 broken tackles that got called back for holding) in the first half, the second one he went down for a minute or two and walked gingerly off.

halftime he came out early to warm up, crowd went wild.

1st play of the 3rd quarter he had a small gain and walked off. 5 minutes later he had his pads off and didn't come back.

lingering shoulder injury from last week at ashtabula lakeside. he was splitting carries when the game was still in the balance when normally he's going for 30 carries a game easily. he's howland's entire team, line is small, receivers are slow and unathletic, they just feed him over and over.

hopefully he's okay going forward.

lemme go to jjhuddle to see if there's any more info as there was a 100+ post thread on the game tonight.

at jjhuddle (ohio hs football forum) says it was a separated shoulder that got popped back in at halftime, then aggravated again the first carry of the second half.

So I'm not a doctor, but AFAIK a dislocated shoulder is one where the upper arm bone pops out of the shoulder socket and can be "popped" back in.

A separated shoulder basically has nothing to do with your arm, it's about your collarbone and your shoulder blade stretching the ligaments apart at the top of your shoulder and it doesn't just "pop" back in.

Doctor types feel free to correct me

Dislocation = head of the humerus comes out of the socket. Depending on severity, this can be popped back in

Separation = acromioclavicular joint (where clavicle meets the scapula) injury. Treatment for this can range from rest to surgery. Very, very painful too.

very painful, did this my senior year running down a punt return. hurt like hell to even run on Saturday morning as part of post game bumps and bruises runs as we called it. Any movement of the joint was excruciating for about three weeks. Eventually returned to football by the end of the season. No surgery required, just daily ice bath which was a blast...sarcasm.

One thing that is easy to overlook, these are 17-18 year old kids with the recovery time of a gnat. Not 40 something keyboard coaches. The muscular development and tendon structure of every kid is different. He could be done for the season, he could play next week.

It can be popped in. Had a HS quarterback who eventually went on to play special teams at UM dislocate his hip/femur on a hard hit. I went onto the field and actually felt his femur slide back into the joint. An orthopedic surgeon who happened to be there for the other team told me I was nuts and there was no way that was possible. I explained the same thing, yeah, kid, flexibiltiy, tendon structure, whatnot. Sure enough the kid went to his doc in the morning, xrays confirmed dislocation and relocation of the femur due to swelling etc. Kid finished out the season after a few weeks of rehab. He had a relative who was in the PT field and helped with recovery. CAN.
