The previous record was set in 1880-81.

Wish Herm was still around to compare and contrast that winter of 1880-81 with this one....

Of course he was.

Herm was sexist. I did not enjoy him.
Herm was just a 22 year old guy from a different era... It's not his fault.
He's entirely responsible.
/s guess I needed to add that to my above comment as well. /s
of 81 was consiserably worse than this year. My county had snow plows from the 1960s as they could not afford new trucks due to the economy the entire decade of the 70s.
It would take several days to clear 6 inches. This year I had a 16 inch lake effect enhanced storm. It took less than 24 hours to clean the roads. Today we have more miles of roads than 1981.
So yea. This winter is chump change.
Well actually this year was the most snow seen in the area since 1880-81. Doubt the plows were out then
SE Michigan it was definitely worse than 1981-82.
My hometown of Muskegon? Not even close.
Muskegon has ~133" of snow this year.
The record set in 1981-82?
174 inches.
why do you guys keep talking about 1981
the record was set in 1881

I just wish this 6 month winter would finally end!

Personally I wish Perd Hapley was real so he could cover this. This is the end of the comment.

Under 100 inches isn't that much for the Great Lakes.

Detroit never gets any lake-effect snow.
Yeah, on the Lake Michigan side and up north, that's not much. A guy I know in Benzie County said they've gotten over 200 inches so far. Today in Ann Arbor is just depressing (after 77 two days ago). I'm looking outside and seeing snow everywhere and flurries falling. Ridiculous.

Now let's never strive for this record again.

Why are the Starks always right ?
I don't know. I can think of some times that they've been very very wrong.

Perhaps it is just me, but this is one of those records that I was hoping would stand and that we would not see snow again this season, but then I forget the state in which I was born and raised and, for some reason, still live. I sort of see it like certain records or milestones in sports where they were set and you don't want to be that person - like the .215 lifetime batting average of Mario Mendoza.
I'm sort of happy we broke the record. No one will ever doubt how crappy this winter was now.

Definitely the most brutal/cold/snowy winter that I can remember.
That was from my 4 yr old, she was excited to see her fave movie referenced on daddy's fave website.

its all worth it now
Snowwwwww....
DAMMIT.
This year with over 230 inches of snow. I can't believe my snowblower survived.
Congratulations.
We've had 115 inches so far with more coming tomorrow. It's not bad, though--last year we had 135" and had 50" just in April, plus a few in May. It was absurd.
And until last week almost none of it had melted off. My sidewalk had five foot snowbanks on both sides--it was like Hoth.
But 95" is a lot for Michigan and more than our "average," so it's nothing to sneeze at.
Believe I heard the average for Detroit is about42.5" this year was more than double that
Winter is coming.
not coffee, obviously, but the idea is there
Snow sucks.
Throughout the winter it warms up over 32 quite often and the snow melts, it rains it all melts.. Further up north when they get a record snowfall it shows
It didn't exceed 32 degrees too much this past winter.
When I was a sophomore at Michigan Tech we got more snow in ONE MONTH than that.
we got that much snow EVERY DAY -- and I had to walk through it, uphill, both to and from school, a five-mile hike there and a ten-mile trek home.

I'm not one of those kind of people. I haven't reached the ripe old age of 30 yet.
300+ inches this winter. Ouch. Another foot or so on the way.
Can't we have our record without someone poo-poo'n it?
Go and break records somewhere else!
Down here in Toledo we broke the all time record back in February.
