Detroit finds out today if it will host 2019 CFPCG

Submitted by MGoLesher on

According to Synder (Freep trigger warning), the College Football Playoff section committee will announce the locations for the 2018-2020 hosts for the Championship Game, and Detroit put in a bid for 2019. This will be great timing, as Michigan will be looking to go for the 3-peat in their home state!

That's a good point. I just find it awful disappointing that the conference doesn't rotate the title game a little with Detroit. I get that Indy is closer to the middle of the conference though. I think if the CFPC has any vision they'll give Detroit a one year shot. That being said, I don't have high hopes.

How about Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, New York, Washington?  Any of those cities has the facilities to host and could make as good a case for hosting as the ones you name.  Why would OSU agree to play in Detroit, but never in Ohio?  Why go to Pittsburgh which is in the far east of the footprint (only three schools to its east) and not go to NY or DC where Rutgers and Maryland are located?  The nice thing about Indy is that the Indiana teams always suck, so no one ever plays on his "home" field.  I would guess the reason there is no rotation is that it would cause too many arguments about who was being advantaged by the sites selected.  But we don't have to listen to people complain that Purdue or Indiana got an advantge in the championship game ever.

Pittsburgh is about as close to Columbus as it is to Indianapolis and I just threw them out there because they have an outdoor stadium and it is a compromise for those new eastern teams. Cincnnati could work, maybe even Cleveland. Cities in the northeast are too far away from the B1G footprint, IMO.

I thought the appeal of Indy was the central location but also the fact that they have hosted Final Fours, Super Bowls, the combine, and all kinds of other things so they are used to what goes into it, plus they have a dome.

I disagree. Detroit is an hour from A2; Indy is an hour from...Muncie.

Both have top-notch arts organizations. Detroit has better variety of food options. Both are plagued by hipsters. Detroit airport > Indy airport. Everyone talks about Indy as "such a good host city," but I feel like it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Events go there, so the local infrastructure for tourists is robust. Then events go there... etc.

People say that because you can walk to a ton of stuff from the stadium.  I've never been to a Lions game but are there a ton of bars, resteraunts and other entertainment within an easy walk from ford field?  Neither city is actually a draw on its own so setup is what matters.

Yeah.  And if an SEC team plays in this game and wins, they will all point out how they CAN come up north and win in the cold.  I mean, they'll disregard the fact that it is a covered stadium, but still.  They came north.

is just a short bus ride from Ann Arbor, so they could cut down on one of the teams travel expenses significantly if they had it in the D.

This would be great for the city of Detroit. I do not think they will win the bid, but it would be a good story and would be extremely beneficial if Michigan is in contention that year.

I would hate if michigan lost a home game against a rival.  A good basketball arena during a big run in an important game is the best atmosphere in sports.  When the dagger 3 falls to complete a big comeback or take a 10 point lead in a game and the opposing coach calls timeout its a bissful thing.

I was at a MD-Duke game onetime where MD went on a run and K called a timeout and the crowd kept cheering and getting louder throughout the time out and were actually louder on the next possession than when it got called.  It was unreal.

Also it won't be the most expensive arena ever built, it says its the most expensive in the NHL and even that is a little iffy since the Barclays arena cost more, it just wasn't technically built as a hockey arena first. Still looks good though.

Other cities in the running for 2019: The Bay Area (Santa Clara), Charlotte, Houston, New Orleans and San Antonio. All of these other cities also submitted for at least one of the other two years.

If not Detroit, I hope it's Santa Clara. It would be great to see Harbaugh winning the national title in Jed York's stadium.

One of the biggest boosts — including for an application for Final Fours a few years ago that didn't win — is the looming new Red Wings arena and surrounding development.

Admittedly, it's hard to imagine it in the current phase of development (a large graded dirt field), but that development along I-75 and within shouting distance of Ford Field will be a nice addition to the near-downtown area. It would be awesome to see the Championship Game here in Detroit actually, and as the article does mention, Detroit is not new to this so there is that on the resume too.

2018: Atlanta (Mercedes Benz Stadium or something being built)

2019: Santa Clara (Levi Stadium)

2020: New Orleans (Superdome)

Sad they didn't choose Detroit 2019 or at least Minneapolis 2020, still won't come up north.

They don't want to play in a cold weather city (despite a dome).  It needs to be in Indy, Minneapolis, or Detroit in the next rounds.

Nobody wants to go to those cities normally as a tourist, let alone in January.  These selections are about making money not keeping people in the midwest happy and the way you make the most money is by picking a place people want to stay multiple days in as a tourist in addition to the game.

Just claimed they want to move the game around, saying they have the first 6 in 6 different states (Texas, Arizona, Florida, Atlanta, California, Louisiana). Unfortunately seems pretty consistent to keep it south and west like the previous BCS games.

I say put it at Solider Field at noon.

The game needs an identity.  Lucas Oil is a sterile setting and the night time slot competes with SEC title game.  Put it outside, at noon in a large city.  Give it some midwestern flavor.
