DetNews: Where Michigan stands with four top offensive line recruits

Submitted by markinmsp on

To go along with gordiebell's OL analysis earlier there is an interesting article today by Sam Webb in DetNews about David Dawson, Cameron Hunt, Kenny Lacy, Na'Ty Rodgers and his interpretation of UofM recruiting's stance towards them.

The blurb definitely puts things in more perspective.  Its hard to hold a kid to a decision that he made soon after losing his father to a sudden tragic accident.  I don't think us grown-ups would be able to function for days and days after going through something like that.  Its good that he is able to communicate the trouble he had with the coaches (and others in general).  It helps with the healing process.

Moral of the story:  Always keep lines of communication open, regardless of the circumstances.  Just "keep it real" and everyone benefits, especially yourself.   /end sermon

Also, it looks like Dec. 14 will be quite an interesting day with recruits David Dawson, Kenny Lacy, Na'Ty Rodgers, and Gareon Conley all scheduled to visit Ann Arbor.

it looks like he'll have to commit before that Dec. 14th weekend. Otherwise, one of the other options could take the plunge. He's the only one that's been here before, so it makes sense he'd be able to.

Dawson's personal struggles and hurt and confusion are among the easiest things for me to understand.  Not that I really understand, because I don't know, but it isn't at all hard to understand the confusion felt by an 18 year-old losing a parent.

What I don't get was Thomas Wilcher, instead of staying silent, saying "that [Dawson to Michigan] ship has sailed... sunk... whatever."  I'm extremely happy that Wilcher is a Michigan Man, and I'm just as happy if Dawson enters Michigan as a freshman.  But that was a weird thing to say, given what we are learning now.

Because the other motivation might have been that Wilcher was trying to protect Dawson, at a delicate moment, from too many "Michigan" questions.  Which is why I left it at "weird" instead of actually criticizing Wilcher, which is no business of mine.  The guy is coaching a bunch of Detroit kids, and sending some of the very best of them to Michigan to be our football heros.  That's a guy who deserves our maximum understanding and cooperation.

Any of the four will work.

Obviously Dawson's summer  camp performances, proximity, and ability to keep the Cass Tech tradition going would make him the preferred candidate.

However, as long as we get another interior line recruit, I'll be happy.

The strangeness around him is completely understandable. Really, one day your dad goes to work and then just doesn't come back. The poor kid must be in a world of hurt. I don't know that he'll end up in Ann Arbor (if not i just hope it's not E. Lansing or Columbus). I can see how and why Hoke is making something of an exception to his "no visits" policy and talking to David.

We'll apparently take any of them as good enough with our other 4 studs. Suspect Dawson says yes before Dec 14 or Hunt says yes on that day. Other 2 will have to consider their stated favorites. This won't wait until Jan with these guys taking a full set of visits.
