DetNews articles on Gary and his role

Bit of a fluff piece about Rashan and the Paramus camp and how he's coming to Ann Arbor next week...but this bit stood out to me:

"When I get there, they say they’re going to put 18 pounds of muscle on me,” the 6-foot-5, 290-pounder said. “You’re going to see me with my body changed and I can’t wait to see the change.

When I get there, I’m going to start at defensive end and we’ll see how that works out and then I’ll start being able to move around. I have to learn the game first and being under the kids I have to be under, I’m going to learn from them and they’ll teach me how to play it."

So a potentially 300-310 pound dude who can move all over the line with Suh-like potential who's humble. YES PLEASE

Many writers expect him to play early and often. Most Freshman on the OL/DL take some time to develop. He will add depth right away.

They would have to develop quite a bit to get where he is right now. We haven't had any recruits here before to compare him to. I expect him to play right away at a good level, then develop into a terror.

have is they have a spring practice under their belt. As OP said, "he is not your typical freshman". In fact, he's the only DE that was a consensus no. 1 by all the major services. This separates him from Clowney and Nkemdiche, obviously among the best to come along in the past few years and that distinction indicates just how far "above the curve" they young man is.

I do like the fact he pays deference to the experience of his teammates which a freshman should do in regard to his upperclassmen. I think he is genuine when he states he can learn from them and he will. In fact, he has proven he will learn from every source available, going so far as to having a "hands coach."  From all significant amount of readindg I  have done on Gary- guess the same is true of most UM fans - already possessing so tangibles, that in many cases exceed NFL level talent already, and although many of the NFL's best and recent college recruits are labeled as having "good hands," he is the first I've read about where constant mention of unparalleled hand skills gives one a sense of all his skills, this is perhaps his greatest asset. Basically, no matter what technique you attempt to block him, he will, naturally, though hours and hours of practice, automatically use the correct hand technique that in itself will render such technique useless.

Brown has already stated, "I cannot see a scenario where he will not play this year," which reads to me, he'll see action vs. Hawaii and by time the BIG season rolls around he will be the starter. This is not to dismiss Charlton who, judging off of last season's larger than expected package to the NFL, will also suit up on Sundays. And this brings us back to the spring practice advantage. He possesses already all they will try to teach him as to fundamentals and techniques. He will learn a few more and refine those that he has. However, his physical gifts and the way Brown loves to stunt almost everyone makes him the ideal candidate for that position. It also allows him to line up inside if they are not trying to disguise his role as a run stopper or leave him on the edge and through their blitz package have him end up on the inside where he can destroy blocking schemes or, at minimum, negate the intended ountumebering of personnel at point of attack.

Yeah, I see this kid starting by regulare season opener and getting better and better and going a long way toward Michigan pulling a rarity in recruiting, getting three of one state's no. 1 player in a four year period, and in this case, of course, all being from the same high school. Drew Singleton, just like Jabrill and Gary before him, will have his choices, but he won't have to question where he should go if he is wondering about who gives him the best chance for success.

Who's got it better than you guys? Hands down. No one will stop UM's d-line this year. What if Michigan decides to run a five man front at any given time? You have Gary, Mone, Glasgow, Wormley and Charlton. Then you figure in two linebackers to man the middle, Peppers, Lewis, Thomas and Hill around the edges. Do you stop that defense? Think about that question. How many guys do you leave in to stop that rush? Does your team actually have 3 seconds. It's automatically knocking out 7 players on offense I believe. 5 lineman, a qb and at least one tailback or fullback. That leaves 6 defenders to handles 4 on the offense. I think UM could pull it off.

I'd bet he means no harm by it, but it is weird to see someone fresh out of HS refer to college upperclassmen as "kids".  Probably taking a cue from the coaches but still.

The article says that the Paramus camp had 650 kids.  It also references the competing Rutgers/Ohio State camp.  Does anybody know what the attendance, and quality of attendance, was for that camp?

I think he's a captain eventually. Work ethic, humble, knows how much he still has to learn, and has an excitement for the game. Love this guy.

Does anyone else find it confusing that Rutgers is bringing in Ohio State as a part of their camp? It feels like they're inviting in a pack of wolves to try and keep the fox out of the hen house. Good luck keeping any NJ talent when both Harbaugh (HAIL!) and Meyer are firmly entrenched in your state.

Said this on a different thread: this is the weirdest part of the situation. OSU recruits New Jersey too, and any prospective recruits that go to the Rutgers/OSU camp... well, they aren't looking at Rutgers.

So Rutgers has teamed up to camp with a powerhouse program which will soon be flaying their team alive, in order to spite another powerhouse program which just got done curbstomping them... because they are mad that powerhouse programs which can wail on Rutgers can also recruit well in New Jersey.

There's some serious Underpants Gnome logic going on here..

Not every recruit is going to make it into Ohio State.  Even some 4-stars.  So trying to pick up some of OSU's leftovers is not really a bad strategy for Rutgers.  Rutgers could never get 1000 kids to attend a Rutgers camp.

I can see why they would do it.  I just want them to do it and shut up about it.

Ash probably figured that going up against the Paramus camp without a big name partner like OSU would flop. He is probably hoping that Meyer and Schiano will steer NJ recruits they don't want to him. Perhaps they will, like Tressel did for Dantonio. Realistically, he's not going to get many players that UM/OSU want.

I think this war against Harbaugh and Michigan is all about developing his own image. It's not as if Rutgers was the second choice of anybody Harbaugh has signed. At most, they mentioned Rutgers as a courtesy.

Everyone else on here is ignoring this point. As is stated again and again, one of the big upsides to all these camps is that they expose lower rated guys to the schools likely to take them. If there was anyone in NJ that OSU wanted, Rutgers was a distant third in that recruitment. This gave Rutgers a better chance to see the leftovers, as much as they'd hate to admit it.

I didn't think I could be more excited for Rashan, but then he says this, "I have to learn the game first and being under the kids I have to be under, I’m going to learn from them and they’ll teach me how to play it."

Damn. He really is going to be amazing, isn't he?

I would think that they want him at 300 weight wise. He probably has a little bit of baby fat and if they take that off then add muscle he can add the weight. What that means is that we probably won't get slower doing this, just stronger.

Love the attitude, and, it's something that's visible in his highlight tape. Sure, he could blow by guys every play in high school, but, in a lot of those clips, you can see him holding back and maintaining his gap and responsibility. He plays within the scheme, insteadh of just charging ahead seeking individual glory, and potentially leaving holes.
