Detailed Spring Practice #7 Report

Submitted by SAMgO on

I haven't seen this linked to the board yet so please delete if it's already been posted, but here's a great report from the latest spring practice. It's very bullish on Shane being the starter at this point, apparently he had a great outing. OL looking good outside of center right now. Almost exclusively base 3-4 defense. Definitely worth a read.

New coaches, system changes, long practices, coaches experimenting with guys at different positions, and on and on.  Lots of evaluation and assessment going on.  Not to worry at this point.

Shane has results that suck. Plenty of people like Speight, and Malzone. The best QB will win the job and ay not even be on the roster yet. I can drop dimes in 7 v 7, let's see what everyone does in the spring game before we annoint the king.

There were a few other mistakes in there about a player's class year as well. Darboh and Chesson will both be Juniors, not Seniors. Shallman is a Sophomore, not a Junior. Pallante is a Freshman. Cole is a Sophomore, not a Freshman. So there were plenty of errors in terms of class year on the article.

Or you wake up one morning with a toothache...by 10:30AM you can't bite down and your head is throbbing...after a quick rush to the dentist you find out you have an abscess developing from an undiagnosed cavity in a wisdom tooth. They perform surgery and the cavity is so large that  you can look thorugh the tooth. (Happened to me in college)

Not buying it. Shane would be lucky to start for a MAC team. He's not a Big Ten caliber QB. I never understood all the fuss when Id watch his HS tape and he hasn't shown anything in any of the opportunities he's been given. I don't care how far he can throw a football. He's a poor decision maker with the football and this will not change.

Yes, plugging your ears and going "lalalalaicanthearyou" about info that goes against your seemingly preconceived notions that Malzone has this thing locked up really seems like a winning strategy. What do you have against Morris? Because your posts regarding him far surpass simple doubt and border on outright hope he fails. And you're digging that hole even more with such hard takes.

I just feel like he's wasting a scholarship spot that could go to an actial big ten caliber athlete. He is awful at the position he was recruited to play. You need to step back and take off the 5-star blinders and look at everything youve seen him do at the HS level and at Michigan. I have not seen him make one impressive play ever. He's a David Cone level talent at best and has no business starting for our football team.

If Harbaugh picked Antonio Whitfield to be ourstarting QB too would trust his judgement over my own skepticism, but that doesnt make it any more of a likely scenario. At some point you need to get over this "but he had 5 stars next to his name!" stuff and come to terms with the fact that Shane is not a quarterback. Just pretend you knew nothing about him other than what youve seen him do on the field and ask yourself what your realistic expectations are based on what he's shown.

What I don't get is he is down on Morris based on what Morris "has shown." What exactly has Malzone shown? Nothing? Oh so he was a good high school QB and won titles at a school that has dominated D2 high school football in the state for decades? Last I checked that means absolutely nothing.

So we have two practice assessments posted in this thread.  The original sunshine and rainbows one and the Henson drivel.  It seems obvious to me the truth lies somewhere in between those two.

What is very disturbing though is the list of injuries provided in the 1st piece, I counted 17 guys absent from full practice, I realize people get banged up, but that is a huge number.  And what of the 5 or so players who weren't even at practice?  What gives?

As a parent I know that there are specific rules you agree to to attend these practices. For someone to come in and agree to them then to turn around and post such a write-up for his own blog/rag is piss poor.  I'm sure it's a risk that the coaches are aware of in this day and age but it is dispicable nonetheless.  I think press has had one or two "in practice" availability sessions and the staff are aware of their presence and run practice accordingly.  If you go as a guest of a family member or as a coach/guest and then turn around and write this all up then I hope you are eventually found out and banned from this opportunity.

Regarding his observations - single point perspectives of drills and unit/team unit sessions are fraught with signficant sample size bias....  There are always bumps and bruizes that keep players out of some or all of these sessions at different times and the staff plugs in individuals constantly.  Also, there are usually concurrent units/teams running and some often are over in Osterbahn (sp) while a group is in Glick.

In your zeal and desire to support this staff and team and learn about them please don't enable ratfinks.
