Desmond hating on Sparty

Submitted by CincinnatiWolverine on
I'm just watching College Gameday and enjoyed Desmond and Herbie arguing over how good Iowa really is. Herbie was saying that Iowa won in a tough environment last week and Desmond started mocking Sparty as always finding a way to lose big games. I love it! Although I do agree with Herbie in that Iowa has been impressive by winning at Penn State and Wisconsin, as well as the chance to win in Columbus in a few weeks. If they win out, they deserve their chance.

Iowa is not good. I really hope they don't win out. Even if they do they might not go to the NC game though. But they'd lose by 20 to USC or Oregon in the Rose Bowl. They shouldn't have beaten us or MSU. They don't deserve a chance if Texas is still undefeated. One of Bama or Florida will be undefeated.

Florida has needed help from the refs to win their games against Arkansas and MSU. Alabama needed some questionable calls to avoid upsets as well. What do the SEC Lords do? They tell the coaches they'll be suspended or fined if they question the refs. Your argument that the SEC is WAYYYY better than the Big Ten just shows that all you do is watch Sportscenter by day and sleep on a Mark May pillow at night while holding a CBS blanket. The Big Ten as a whole plays well agains the SEC. Don't lay the Buckeye's problems at the conference's feet. I have watched an insane amount of SEC games this year because the BTN sucks and their teams are NOT as fantastic as everyone says. They don't play in snow, or cold rain, or in stadiums that boast the highest attendance averages. They are just as susceptible to the "every" team as the Big Ten teams are. Just my two cents, but don't be a Florida homer. They are clearly not that great unless playing Charleston Southern.

Wait until after the season to make this particular argument. The SEC has almost certainly been the best conference in the country for the past few years, but these things tend to be cyclical. The SEC will likely start slipping in a few years, if it hasn't already.

USC has their own offensive woes, which really plays into Iowa's defensive strength. The same is true of Florida and Alabama. Why do people give teams like USC, Florida, and Alabama passes for almost losing to weak teams, but hold a team like Iowa to different standards? I'm not sure if Iowa deserves their shot at a title. But I'm not sure if Florida or Alabama do either.

People said the exact same thing about Ohio State vs. Miami back in 2002 or whenever it was. Iowa's defense is pretty good especially given the schedule they've played. Don't forget that Florida and 'Bama have gotten by with helpful calls in skin of their teeth wins lately. Texas...maybe over Iowa if undefeated but they haven't had to play as challenging a schedule as Iowa has. I wouldn't mind seeing them win out to win the B10. It would be the first time in a while that I can remember a team other than Michigan or Ohio State win the B10 AND play Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State in the that year. If they win they deserve it.

Iowa's a good squad, but if they go up against Florida (or to a lesser extent Alabama or USC) they might get torn up defensively. As Brian mentioned, they played a very vanilla scheme against Michigan that only worked because we shot ourselves in the foot Cheddar Plax style. That isn't going to happen against the aformentioned teams, and Florida in particular will probably find various and sundry ways to gash that deep safety look with months to gameplan.

To be fair, I don't think Florida is in the same discussion as Texas and Bama in terms of NC teams. They have looked horrible virtually all season, and at some point they will run into a team that can take advantage of their mistakes. Iowa would make Tebow look like an overrated QB with limited throwing ability. If Iowa has to play USC, then they would probably get killed. Throw them in against a SEC team, though, and they might surprise people.

They have played the SEC well in the past. And Michigan shoved it down FL's throat a couple of years back so i am not for assuming anything when it comes down to bowl games. Let the chips fall where they may and we'll find out at the end of the game who is the best. January 1, 2004 Outback Bowl Beat Florida 37 17 January 1, 2005 Capital Bowl Beat LSU 30 25 January 2, 2006 Outback Bowl Lost toFlorida 24 31 December 29,2006 Alamo Bowl Lost to Texas 24 26 January 1, 2009 Outback Bowl Beat SC 31 10

I was watching the end of that game with a buddy last weekend and he was rooting for the stop by Sparty as he has some unfounded hate for Iowa. Told him to not hold is breath as Sparty always finds some way to lose and sure enough. Iowa does have some holes and don't think they would match up against anyone well that they would potentially face in the NC. But to say they don't deserve it if they are undeafeated isn't fair either they have done what they need to do to win.

When I was watching that game after MSU scored, all I could think was "Wow. Iowa STILL has 1:37 left." I didn't really think that they'd do anything, as they hadn't moved the ball too well before that, so I was a little surprised. Just a LITTLE. But, yeah. That was a pretty hilarious comment by Desmond. And pretty true, too...

need to run that clock in their locker room each week in anticpation for all of their games- not just the M game. So they beat the Wolverines this year. What does it mean when they cannot sustain their effort and intensity for opponents that come after on the schedule? They need to learn what Izzo and Mateen Cleeves learned when they finally defeated M in hoops; that beating Michigan is just one small step up the mountain of success. Nothing more and nothing less. Until MSU learns this they will continue to experience their own version of Groundhog Day.
