Not good if true. It would be on his own dime since he's already had his official visit to Auburn. I'd link but it's premium. Don't shoot the messenger.
to play football, not to play trumpet
Even if it is true, for some reason this doesn't worry me at all.
a player who has made his decision going to a school that isn't michigan on his own dime?
Unofficial or not, it being Auburn, it seems unlikely it's his "own dime."
How many times did Treadwell do that?
If anything, this recruitment reminds me of Josh Garnett. Teased us until the day he chose Stanford. I still do think Michigan will end up with Green though... Just scary when teams down south get the last word.
Treadwell reminds me of Jordan Diamond. Had us as a leader throughout the entire time but chose not to commit and kept "enjoying the recruiting process" then ended up committing elsewhere.
During the AA game, he said he needed to visit Auburn and Tennessee again to meet the new coaching staffs. He's already taken his official to Auburn, ergo visiting again "on his own dime" (Read: on a booster's private jet)
But Auburn grads can't afford private jets.
I know that was a tongue-in-cheek comment, but some dude named Tim Cook (CEO of a small startup named after a fruit) is an Auburn grad. Pretty sure his stock options could buy a fleet of G6s.
No visits for RB Derrick Green this weekend. Family taking break after San Antonio for #ArmyBowl
But, other programs are gonna bust their humps for top guys like Green. We have to work hard to get them, and in this environment, at least that hard to keep them.
Auburn, though? That program is not in a great place, although maybe they sell him on "play now." Not really something that differentiates them from us. He will at a minimum be in the mix if he goes Blue.
looks like 'pay now' got autocorrected to 'play now'.
Or sell him on buying him, which is more likely and troublesome IMO.
"bassmaster?" More like "ASSmaster," you dick.
Until he signs a LOI, we're still in the lead
Until he signs a LOI, there is no such thing as a "lead" with any meaning.
He said he was going to take tall of his officials cause... Why not, free trip.
Why are you surprised that he's doing exactly what he said he was going to?
Because it's an unofficial, dummy.
I think you're confused about the meaning of "on his own dime". It doesn't mean free so yes this should be a little concerning.
Maybe I'm confused about "on his own dime." With Auburn, I'm sure they can find a way to subsidize any unofficial trip and add on another $100K.
Apologies. I just woke up and read it incorrectly.
Thank you all for pointing out how much of an idiot I am. I also appreciate your fervor and vitriole.
last one out please turn off the lights.
I think Auburn fans are currently read the book, 'The Secret". If you think it long enough, and wish for it, it will come true.
That might also explain that tornado in Tuscaloosa a couple of years ago.
Dude, not cool. The tornado was deadly and harmed a lot of people.
We knew he wanted to take additional visits. Those visits had to take place sometime, so the fact that it is this weekend wouldn't seem to make much of a difference.
I think the problem isn't so much that he's going to visit a school that isn't Michigan after he said he already knew where he was going (which is already bad), it's that he's paying for the trip himself. Definitely not good.
He's said he was going to take visits to AU and UT. He's already taken officials to both those schools. He knows it's going to be on his own dime. Everybody else knows it would be on his own dime. This is not a surprise.
Yesss exactly now will everyone shut up about these fucking dimes?
Somebody has to go back and get a shit load of dimes...
Funniest movie ever made.
It's twoo, it's twoo!
- Lili Von Shtupp
I would take a trip to Auburn too if it only cost me a dime.
He's going on his own nickel to listen to the new staff give their two cents on how to give a dollar's worth of free advice. Better?
The hick states DO have a low cost of living...
I would be more worried if this visit was taking place closer to signing day considering he said he wanted to make a decision late January.
In that rivals chat he said he wanted to meet the new Auburn staff, so this isn't actually that surprising.
My guess is Michigan still leads, but he has liked Auburn in the past and wants to at least the new coaching staff a chance before actually committing. He's just cleaning up any loose ends before finishing the process. Maybe he finds out he likes the coaching staff and goes to Auburn, but I don't think he's making this trip to commit there (he hasn't even met the coaches yet).
If he's going to commit to Michigan, I'd like him to be done looking around. If he's going to commit to Auburn, he should make sure he's comfortable. Either way, I hope he has a nice time. In fact, I hope everyone has a nice weekend.
If this turns out how I now think its going to turn out, it's further evidence that Michigan runs a clean program.
I'm in that camp too.
I just cant see spending his own money to take another trip when he already knows where he's going.
He said he would. He took officials to Tenn and Auburn, then they got new coaches. I think it's a good idea for him to at least meet them, despite him already knowing where he wants to go.
I agree, but for some reason those words do not make me feel any better.
be swayed by Gus' spread attack, especially as his spread focuses on RB runs outside the tackle - and we're not even considering his favorite play of the jet sweep.
Plus, his OV for the Georgia game had the distinct benefit of showing him 80% of Auburn fans leaving by half. They are bandwagon fans with a win-at-all-cost mentality.
Never know, but AU shouldn't be our biggest threat.
Gus can change the focus of his spread attack. He focused on RB runs to the outside at Auburn with Newton because Newton was a great between the tackles runner but didn't have elite speed.
Also, Green has really good speed, him attacking the edge isn't too much of an issue.
All that said, I still don't think he wants to play in a spread attack and my guess is Michigan still leads, as I commented above.
I remember Newton outrunning Patrick Peterson to the endzone:
the same argument everyone made last year for Brionte Dunn. How did that one turn out for us? Granted Dunn was a current Ohio commit, but any coach can feed a kid as much BS as he wants to get him to commit. It worked for Urban!!
However, his scheme for 15 years has been predicated on "sideline to sideline" with running backs (running wide is both to attack the edge and split the safeties for seam routes). His inside running is just to probe the D and keep LBs honest. Shiloh, Springdale, Tulsa, Auburn - all relied on these principles.
Regardless, as you noted his speed, maybe Green simply decides he is more of a speed/seam guy than pro/power guy.
We know 18 year olds make irrational choices sometimes.
I remember him saying that his mom "had that feeling" after a prior Auburn visit, and since it seems as though his mom has a lot to say in his commitment, I would consider them a big threat.
Whistling through the graveyard. Any idiot knows that Auburn has rabid fans and that their early departures last season were due to terrible football. A confident player and coach will expect things to improve, and Auburn's environment is a known draw.
And he might not like spread offenses, but don't think he can't be sold on playing in one better tuned for his skills.
And don't think these superficial factors are even a real issue anyways.
Auburn snagged Zeke Pike when Malzahn was still there, and he was a complete mismatch, as far as I can tell. Point is, a duffel bag full of cash can overcome a lot of obstacles.
Zeke Pike is now a backup TE at Louisville. So yes, not a good fit in any aspect of the word.
This is not good...
He already stated he's made up his mind where he wants to go. He also stated he'd visit Auburn and Tennessee (he hasn't met with the new coaching staffs yet at either school.) I think that's very telling for Michigan. It shouldn't be a bad thing when he visits Tennessee after.
I do not understand why anybody is suprised by this at all. Derrick Green himself said at the Army game that Michigan leads but he was still going to visit Auburn and Tennessee again to get to know the new coaching staffs.
We at mgoblog my friend...selective hearing is crucial
And everyone freaking out that it's "not an official" and that he's "paying his own dime", he's paying for a weekend trip for one of the biggest decisions of his life so far. It's probably something that can be seen as worth the cost to make sure the next 3-5 years are the best fit for the kid.
The Auburn boosters will be very pleased to hear this.
It's like your ex you gotta try it out at least one more time to make sure it's not for you.
Does Auburn cover dental too? Green's got decisions to make
My prediction - upon arrival in Auburn, Alabama (the arm pit of the Arm Pit) he's all like "I paid for this???"...and commits to Michigan.
You do realize that he's visited there before, and still has them in his top 3, right?
we are supposed to freak out because a recruit who said he was taking more visits...is taking more visits?
Nothing is "on your own dime" when you are a recruit visiting an SEC school...let alone Auburn.
He's ben considering them all along right? As Iceman said, Auburn and "on his own dime" don't do together.
Everyone who works at Sam's Club is freaking out on their message board right now.
what about the dimes? Will you be spending yours or someone else's? Inquiring minds want to know . . . .
Never go full retail!
Its very possilbe that trip will cost you more than Green will spend traveling to Auburn this weekend. Be very careful.
Did he insist on being in the picture with the other Auburn recruits at the AU game? Then I will start to worry.
Did Auburn have any recruits at the Army game?
(my bad, the Army game)
QB Jeremy Johnson was the only Auburn commit at the Army All-American game. They had like 4 or 5 at the UA game.
Seinfeld? Brent has a little bit of that look, yes?
just checking to see how much money AU will offer him.. then HE GONE
If we don't land Green, I may break my own tibia out of frustration.
I stuck it inside an Auburn postcard to persuade him.
We want video of the tibia breaking and don't try to use Fitz's injury in place of your leg.
Too soon? Too soon.
While thinking about this, I took a peek at Auburn's recruiting class. How is it that they already have 3 players that have signed LOI's?? I see that all three are JUCO types... are there different rules for kids transferring vs. kids coming out of high school?
Yes, there are. JUCO's can sign as early as December...I think.
Early enrollees all have to sign an LOI. We have six.
EDIT: And mid-year JUCO transfers can sign as early as mid-December...
Look at our list on rivals. It has six of our guys as already signed.
Why is everyone in this thread so casually stating that a recruit who we really want is taking (or is about to take) impermissable benefits from another school? Or do you people just not want him to come here anymore?
Actually, Auburn wisely gives the impermissable benefits to the recruit's parents, that way they can honestly deny giving anything to the recruit.
(See Newton, Cecil)
if those posts are enough to keep him away, I'm thinking they have done Michigan a service.
I'm not suggesting that reading this thread would keep him from coming to Michigan. I am questing the mindset of a lot of people here, who seem to be saying that it is a foregone conclusion that Green will take the benefits.
These people either no longer want Green to come to Michigan since he is taing this unofficial visit, which I think is ridiculous, or they still want him to come here and don't care whether he takes the benefits from another school, which I think is even worse.
Call me crazy, but I'd like to assume that our recruits do not break NCAA rules until I see actual evidence to the contrary.
If Hoke & Co. have some method of only going after the ones who would not, I'm good with that. Personally, I don't see us wanting a recruit and that recruit (or his parents) being willing to take money or other benefits as being mutually exclusive.
As far as it being a mindset, I think you are reading more into the comments than the writers intended. I do think that most of them think it is a foregone conclusion that said benefits might be offered.
Auburn's appeal. I drove through there one time on the way to somewhere else and it seemed like the bottom of the backside of beyond.
Did you actually drive through Auburn or just through the surrounding area? I stayed in Auburn for a weekend a few years back, and found it to have a rather nice, small town appeal. The surrounding area (Columbus, GA, etc.), however, is absolutely horrible.
His recruitment has seemed very odd to me. His final three schools are Michigan, Tennessee and Auburn. Is it me or does one of these stick out like a sore thumb?
Tennessee and Auburn are notorious for using shady recruiting tactics. If he ends up at one of those schools there is no way I could be convinced there wasn't recruiting violations.
Well, you stand alone with that belief. There are a million sources that cite the squeaky clean recruiting practices of those programs. Mostly ESPN, but whatever.
Getting him seems unlikely now. When's the last time Michigan landed a top 10 FB recruit?
To everyone like this guy: Did you watch the National Championship Game and see Eddy Lacey run the ball. How can you say you wouldnt want something like that.
I commented the other day in a different thread that Green strikes me as our Lacey. Strong, solid, decent feet and ability to wear down defenses.
We still need Deveon or another back (Mixon in 2014) to be a second threat, like TJ Yeldon.
Lacy's running in NCG was his best showing by far and he made the OL look even better.
Step away from the ledge, dude. It's a little early to hit the panic button.
Good thing Shane Morris didn't have a good senior year and land in the top ten, cuz that dude woulda been gone.
Has anyone confirmed this yet, I havent seen anything official?
Maybe he just wants to see if he can get a closer look at Kathrine Webb?
He can deliver his apology in person. Hold on, now Kirk is joining the travel party also.
YoBoMoLlo, are you kidding? Brent Musberger is staking out A.J.'s place in a Dish Network van, wearing camo and eyeblack on his face. He has his ghillie in the back for nighttime reconnaissance missions.
will decide AJ's mom is a better target for his efforts?
She might move slow enough for him to catch and she might not notice his analgesic scent.
I'm not familiar with the "analgesic scent."
I think we'd all be OK with that. But until then, we'll play the 'higher stars is more likely to be successful' game.
Yes, but annecdotal evidence doesn't really tell the whole story. If that's all you wanna look at, how about this?
Last year, Alabama signed TJ Yeldon (5*, 12th overall player) and Kenyan Drake (4*). Both run behind the same line. Yeldon runs for 1131 with another 1000 yard rusher on the team. Drake runs for 285. Which one would you rather have?
Last year, Miami signed Duke Johnson (5*, 30th overall player) and Danny Dillard (3*). Both run behind the same line. Johnson runs for 977 yards, leading the team. Dillard redshirted. Which one would you rather have?
Last year, Texas signed Johnathan Gray (5*, 5th overall player) and Daje Johnson (4). Both run behind the same line. Gray runs for 740 yards, leading the team. Johnson had 225 yards.
Rankings are obviously not perfect, but they exist for a reason.
Jesus, everybody needs to get off the ledge. This kid is a big time recruit. Big time recruits take multiple visits and usually drag their commitments out until signing day. If we want an elite recruit, these are the kinds of things you deal with.
Everyone? I think I counted 3 people who might have been on the ledge. Certainly not everyone.
Comment redacted due to the facts below.
He said he was taking visits to everyone remaining. He needs to see Auburn with Gus. Wouldn't worry that much.
This thread never happened.
Derrick Green almost makes it to the Alabama State border, then all of a sudden....
Then Derrick Green will truck Gandalf over the edge, muttering something about taking his visits. I've never been to Alabama, but I just assume there are volcanic like structures that ancient creatures dwell in.
Then while gandalf is hanging over the edge, he says
This foe is beyond you, Derrick Green
Then Derrick will retreat north bypassing Virginia, and heading straight to protection of Hoke the Elder.
When was the last time you had sex...with a woman?
Well, in order to have this account, my wife said that I have to let my daughters name it. So, Lord Voldemort it is. And if you have a problem with Lord of the Rings, you can indeed go fuck yourself.
You needed your wife's permission to have an MGo account? Way to wear the pants there, Ron Weasley...
My wife is better looking than me, and she hates sports, but I enjoy sex. It's really a solid trade off for me.
Once I google Ron Weasley, I will have a scathing retort.
You sir have my eternal respect
okay, even if we don't end up with green, any back is only as good as his offensive line. if alabama had a crappy line, tj yeldon and eddie lacy would look pretty crappy, too. their stats are so outrageous because they aren't touched until they're already 4-5 yds downfield. last i checked, our offensive line recruiting haul was tops in the nation. guys like kalis, magnuson, kugler, bosch, dawson, and the list goes on and on, are going to make whoever we put in the backfield look good. damn good. whether its derrick green or deveon smith. lets also not forget that mike hart was a lowly 3-star when he committed. last i checked, his career at Michigan turned out alright. green would be a great get, but i have just as much confidence in deveon smith to carry the load.
I don't know where it's coming from, or how, but we'll get him!
Well if you read some of the "if he's going to visit an SEC school that just proves he's a liar and a thief" crowd comments above this only means Auburn has developed more stealthy means of funnelling money to him.
I still feel like he's going to Michigan. He says he knows where he is going but hasn't committed because of Hokes visit policy and he just wants to enjoy the rest of his recruitment. Just my thoughts.
Auburn is in the SEC so I doubt it's on his own dime
