Derrick Green Post #135

Submitted by NFG on

Mike Farrell has come out with his projections of the highest rated recruits left who haven't committed yet. He has Michigan landing Green for what it is worth. You'll notice Treadwell and others going to Ole Miss, he projects. I really want to make my way down there to see what all the hype is about.

if you never want to worry about them actually making a good team even better. These top flight guys will go to Ole Miss, put up some stats, finish 2-6 in the SEC every year, you'll forget about them, then they'll be drafted in the 3rd round in 4-5 years and you'll be like "Oh! That guy. What happened to him?"

My ex-roommate (and still friend)'s little sister was on the Ole Miss dance team.  One time she visited with her friends for a weekend in Chicago.  Long story short - the most memorable weekend I had / friendships temporarily ruined / Ole Miss sure can bring it.

He's a interesting recruit to me as well. He would be the highest rated player in the 2013 class for Michigan. However, I've heard analyst basically say he's a glorified FB in their opinion. On the other hand Shane Morris is considered a can't miss recruit by most, but he isn't ranked as high. It's kind of confusing. I'm starting to wonder if some of these so called recruiting experts even scout these kids in person. I listen to Bill King and he has guests on his show that answer recruiting questions. I swear that you could call in to one of those shows and ask about a commit from Montana State and they would talk about the kid for five minutes. There is no way that one guy has the time to properly evaluate every single commit in the country. Recruiting is turning into a big business and people are pouncing at a chance to make money off of it. I'm starting to think that 247 and ESPN suck compared to Scout and Rivals.

Some of these guys have full-time jobs that involve recruiting.  Not to toot my own horn, but I have a couple jobs and - because I'm stupid - still find time to watch film on probably 200-300 recruits in each class.  Naturally, I would expect that they spend much more time evaluating each recruit than I do, but if your job was to sift through film for 8 hours a day, I don't think keeping up with most of these kids would be extremely difficult.  I mean, it would be a full-time job, but I don't think it would be impossible to have a pretty good idea about a large portion of these guys.  And, of course, there are large staffs to help out the heads of ESPN, Rivals, etc.

And while I don't know the backgrounds of all the head recruiting analysts for each of the sites, I will say that the guys at ESPN and 247 at least have football backgrounds.  As far as I know, Mike Farrell (Rivals) and guys like Allen Trieu (Scout, though he's not the head guy) are just journalists.  Someone can feel free to correct me if they know better.  I still think ESPN is lacking in many ways, and 247 is kind of too young to judge very well, but...well...there it is.

Can someone who may have visited Ole Miss or is from the South explain this to me? Because as a Nothern Black Male, I can't fathom going to Ole Miss no matter how attractive the women are because of how racist it is. I can understand most of the other schools because they are good and have a good shot of getting you ready for the NFL but Ole Miss sucks and yet they are in play for 3 5 stars. Maybe my perception of Ole Miss is warped but I can't understand it.

I currently live in New Orleans and work with a group of girls from Ole Miss.  They have a great outlook, fun attitude, know how to cut loose, are smart and oh yeah, are downright beautiful.  After hanging out with them for several years, they invited my wife and I to a game at Ole Miss vs LSU.  Oxford is a great small city with plenty of good music and nice architecture.  The game day experience was awesome and the off field talent was remarkable.  I have two sons that both want to attend UofM, but I have to consider that they may not get accepted there or that there might not be enough scholarships available to help with the out of state tuition so I was thinking that Ole Miss might be a better option than LSU (having been to Baton Rouge also).  But you are right, the racism is overpowering and I can't imagine how enjoyable an experience it would be for a minority and don't think that is someplace I want my kids to attend.
