I'm almost positive that play is supposed to go outside of Kalis. All the blockers are sealing off the edge and Smith just runs right into two unblocked guys that should have been non-factors if he'd just run up behind Kalis's left hip.

I saw a hole that Kalis COULD'VE blocked a guy in, giving Smith enough room to get the 1st.
If your theory is Kalis was designed to pass right by that to sweep outside, I have no evidence to contradict that, but it would certainly be going the long way to get 1 crucial yard.
Just sayin'...

I thought I saw the same thing on 4th and one and re-watched 4-5 times right after the play. I'm fairly certain if he followed the block to the outside as he should have done, it would have been a first down at the minimum.

This makes it clear that Smith got antsy and cut up when he should have stayed outside.  He is not fast enough to be thinking he can make the corner.  No question one of the other backs gets 5+ on this to the outside.

I love seeing this on film as it makes for easy teaching for the coaches.  This is about as obvious as it gets that a well blocked play cannot prevent a back from cutting into a LB.

Interesting to see the UFR when it is out as I am not sure where the breakdowns were.  Line may not have played as bad as it felt, and I do think Utah's front 7 are solid.

I totally agree. Follow the guard's butt and that's an easy 5-7 yards. Darboh is on the CB and that free safety may have committed inside, so even with Smith's lack of speed that may be a TD if he just takes the simple read outside. instead he Chooses to run headlong into the only two unblocked players on the field

but we shouldn't need him for OSU or UNLV.  But for BYU, yes...they need to take the plunge and turn him loose. Whether he's still prone to re-injury is uncertain, but you've gotta play him sooner or later, and the way we looked against Utah, we need any spark to the running game we can get against defenses with a pulse.

I hate to pile on a player, but god damn did he look awful. The guy runs routes in slow motion and falls over making the catch if the ball is even a little off. I'm just not sure what the coaches see out of him to warrant targeting him as much as they did.

he has some good blocking in the previous game. Unfortunately, that's not enough for a TE. HE probably should have changed his position any way, never be a reliable catcher.

There was a 3rd down play, he blew up the LB and was wide open, Rudock instead pass to Butt for a 3rd down conversion. Can't blame him, I would rather him to throw to butt who was coverred tight instead of a wide open Williams or Smith who dropped the ball frequently.

I'm looking at these comments and I can't believe how many people question the depth chart. Hey, the best players played. I trust the coaches.

Depth chart looks more decisive. Hope we see improvements, not because it is Oregon Stat, but reflects in the UFR. I wish Brian had a series where he shows the improvements (assuming an upward trend) each week. At least for this year. Need MOAR Football.

Has Winovich moved back to linebacker? I sure hope this is the case considering he's not on the depth chart at Tight end and considering the seniors we are losing after this year and the lack of depth we'll have at linebacker next year.

I understand he had a few nice games last year, but Maryland and Indiana were lower tier defenses last year against the run.  And we seem to give OSU our best, coaches included, under Hoke.  Plus he had only one catch last year.  I would like to see him get out there just so we can understand if he's good or just a good matchup against bad defenses.  Right now, I'm not convinced.

Definitely looked better than Smith or Green last year. While Maryland and Indiana were lower tier defenses Drake was playing a very good game against OSU, not a .ower tier defense. Smith and Green had great stats against App St. And Miami (NTM) but against nobody else. Are you convinced that any of the other 3 RBs are better?
