Mike McCray's teammate Reon Dawson has been offered, too.  He's a cornerback committed to Illinois, and he visited Michigan for the Iowa game.

Think that Reon Dawson offer (plays CB I believe) is a sign that the coaches might be considering moving one of the other CBs to receiver? Lewis is all-state as a receiver and if it looks like treadwell will go elsewhere, perhaps that is why they are offering Dawson. Especially since they are still in the running for a couple other DBs.

I think that's very likely.  All 4 of our DB commits plus Conley had very good seasons on offense this fall.  Stribling looks like a great DB so I think he sticks to D and it sounds like Dymonte will as well, and Ross Douglas played RB not WR so he's likely to stick to CB in college.  But if Conley recommits, it's very possible he or Lewis end up at WR for us (and it's possible they'd be the best one in the class).

I think there's a pretty good chance that Lewis, Stribling, or Conley ends up at WR.  Michigan keeps sinking on Treadwell's list, and we still need another WR, in my opinion, whether it's a new offeree or a guy changing positions in the 2013 class.

I don't think #2 is valid here. Every analyst close to Michigan recruiting has been adament that coaches are taking 5 offensive lineman and no more. If anything this might be a negative indicator of where the coaches think we stand with our other offerees, Dawson included. If Finley commits to Michigan, that means no Dawson or anyone else for that matter.

Any insight as to whether these kids are interested?  I don't love the idea of offering MSU commits (Reschke, now Finley) if we don't know 100 percent that they'll flip; will give the appearance of MSU beating Michigan in something.  I'm 100 percent behind Hoke and the staff, but this is strange....

You're worried about offering someone on the chance they won't flip? That's an odd concern. If they don't flip, who cares. Nothing will have changed. If they flip, great.

Well, I guess my answer is that momentum seems to factor into recruiting.  Michigan was winning every single head-to-head recruiting battle with MSU in the spring.  Fairly or unfairly, this will seem as if MSU has stemmed the tide and is beating Michigan for kids.

It's more of a perception and portrayal thing, but how the program is percieved and portrayed relative to MSU is important to me.

to be very skeptical whenever someone brings up "momentum."  "Momentum" sort of exists in recruiting, in the sense that good players want to play with other good players (having Shane Morris makes recruiting other guys easier).  But this whole notion that kids will go to Michigan State over Michigan (or vice versa) because a school has won a recruiting battle is a giant [citation needed].

There is no time, sir, at which ties do not matter.

Care how our program is perceived compared to theirs? That's a little brother mentality. That's how they think. Like you said, it is a perception. If we both offer an un-commited kid like mcdowell or gholston, then we have a problem with losing a recruit. Here, it is just taking a stab at a Spartan kid because maybe we have an opening. If it doesn't work, it isn't really a big deal.

That really matters to you?  All that matters is who has the better recruiting class at the end of the day.  If we offered all of their commits, and none of them flip, so what?  Who exactly will think the tide is stemmed when our class is still light years ahead of theirs?  And if we do flip one, then that's even more damage we do to them.

If the coaches like these players (and I have to assume they do) then I'm all for it.

You do not smoke yourself out of school.  As much as that kid (or the people around him) would like to blame weed, that's just not the issue.  I smoked a lot of weed in college, but I had three buddies who smoked insane amounts of weed, like multiple times a day, every day.  Two of them are investment bankers and the third is a surgeon.

Your friend was out of school in three semesters because he was dumb or lazy, not because he smoked weed.

Not that I really want to get into this, but that's not how it works.  If you have a night or two where you got too stoned to do your homework, then the next time do your homework before you smoke weed.

This is no different than blaming video games for flunking out.  Are video games evil, or is the kid just stupid who decided to play video games instead of study?  Lots of people ruin good things by having ill-ordered priorities, but that's the fault of the person ordering the priorities, not of the priorities themselves.

I was just making a joke. I'm not a smoker so I have no idea how weed affects people but I am a drinker and I suspect that weed is less a detriment to one's studies than alcohol. I say this only because alcohol is more readily available and easier to abuse. Plus you don't have to deal with a hangover after smoking up.

So just because it didn't "affect" your studies, that means it can't possibly affect other people?

I don't claim to know all about the subject, but I dislike it when people who smoke try to make excuses that refer to how there are no ill effects.

Actually, maybe not 100% but mostly. I'm not sure I agree that weed may not play a role in someone flunking out of school. I used to smoke pretty heavy in my college days and am now a Dr. but I had plenty of friends who smoked and ended up dropping out.

Having said that, the portion I absolutely agree with is that you can't blame weed, alcohol, video games etc for a persons problems. If someone can't prioritize effectively enough, that isn't anyones fault but their own. Society has gotten to the point where no one seems to take responsibilty for their actions and whenever a mistake is made, it is always someone (or something) elses fault. People need to take responsibility for their actions.

Now this post is neither to condone nor condemn weed smoking as I am pretty much indifferent to it. My brother in law and sister smoke about 200 dollars worth of it a week (and I'm not even sure how much that will buy you now days, but it used to buy a lot). I would prefer (and hope) my kids stay away from it but if they don't I will make sure they take responsibility for their actions (unlike my brother in law who blames my sister for getting him "hooked" on weed as a 25 year old man).

I took some kind of test one weekend in East Lansing when I was a senior that (had I scored better than I apparently did) would have given me a free ride to MSU. I was accepted to every school I applied to except Northwestern.

A free ride for four years was about the only way I was going to go to MSU, though.

I wound up going elsewhere (Miami [NTM]) for a variety of reasons, though.

I agree with your last sentence, but that shouldn't affect Hoke's recruitment policy.  I would be very upset if my team's HC said to himself, "Gosh, I'd really like that player in my recruiting class, but he's already committed to MSU and if I offer him and he stays with them they might write an article about how he didn't flip and make us look bad so I won't offer him because of that."

Also, keep in mind your headline would end with "but UM still signed the other 8."
