Denard's tragedy and his promise to late brother Timothy (NYT)

Clicked on this New York Times link fully expecting it to be yet nother fluff piece on Denard Robinson. It was anything but. Tim Rohan, who was at the Daily last year, took Denard's speech last month and dug deeper:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. —  Timothy Robinson sat on his grandmother’s couch, not looking well. Timothy, 11, was home from school with a stomachache, though it had always been difficult to tell if he was hurting. He was tough, and Denard — the shorter, younger brother — thought the world of him for that.

Denard could tell now, though, and when Timothy’s stomachache worsened, he was taken to a hospital. He died there that night. Denard, then 10, was told Timothy had internal bleeding. Timothy had, perhaps, fallen off his bike. Denard could not recall any other accident. But from then on, things would be different. He could tell from the lost expressions on his parents’ faces.

That is all Denard Robinson, the electric Michigan quarterback, knows about what happened to his brother. That is all he ever wanted to know. He never asked why or how.

Absolutely heart-breaking. Proud to call this man Michigan's captain.

How unbelievable would that

How unbelievable would that be... Denard is one of those guys who I will always remember as a Michigan great. Both on and off the field he is the type of people who you just love and want to see do well.

He is such a genuine person.

He is such a genuine person. Not arrogant or cocky, he doesn't have a big mouth--- it's all about the team, the team, the team!  He is a great role model for kids to look up to!

It never fails to amaze me

It never fails to amaze me that fans of opposing teams fail to see this.  I have no shortage of friends who think he is a cocky asshole or that he somehow seeks out all the media attention that he gets.  I know I'm biased, but I can't even imagine how people come to that conclusion.

Hate the player, but don't hate the man.

Really?

All my Spartan/Buckeye friends, as much as they hate Michigan, have nothing but respect for Denard and how much they wish they could have a guy of that caliber on their team.

I don't think that perception

I don't think that perception is the media coverage so much as the "eating" celebrations and things of that nature.  Act like you've been there before.

If celebrating a TD is all

If celebrating a TD is all that you have, then just shut up.  This kid is as humble a superstar as there has ever been.

Making me happy with my decision to by my first jesrey and make it a 16 back in 2010. Also, the reason I wouldn't trade one second of the RR days

Recruits

He never was a high-ranked recruiter, but he sure evaluated talent that others neglected to see! He was the ONLY coach that would give Denard a shot QB.

...But I still like Hoke better!

This story makes me even more proud that Denard is here, and I will be that much more  sad when he is gone after this year. He is truly a great leader for the team and a great presence on and off the field.

I am all choked up from this histamine reaction to something...that must be it...

In my opinion, Denard has

In my opinion, Denard has already fulfilled his promises.  He has already 'made it.'  Winning the Heisman would be nice, but he's done so much for his team & his school already, I think it would take an unimaginable lapse to take away from that.  He's already left a permanent footprint in Michigan history - this year will determine exactly how big it will be.

I think I need to get my #16 jersey

So,

I've hesitated to buy jerseys because I feel I can't justify spending the money, but Denard and his No. 16 are truly unique and oustanding.  I came to Michigan as a freshman in 2008 and witnessed the worst Michigan football has ever offered, but Denard just makes it seem worth it.

This is a great story.  I am

This is a great story.  I am always amazed and a little jealous of athletes that have incredible talent like Denard.  I wonder to myself how much of it is natural and how much is hard work.  The stories that always get me are ones like this, where you find out the athlete is driven by some sort of tragedy in their life.  I will always wonder what it is inside us that causes one person's tragedy to drive them to greatness and another's becomes their crutch or excuse for the rest of their lives.  I'm glad our quarterback chose to use his brother's tragedy as motivation instead of explaination.  Go Denard and GO BLUE!

How about Tim Rohan?

Making huge waves as a young reporter? I'm not that familiar with the hierarchy of sports writers past the people on around the horn and PTI. Is Tim doing well for his age or is he doing REALLY well for his age?

I never new the story about why he kneels. I assumed he tebowed before tebowing was cool. What a fine human being he is. I wish him all the best in life.
