Denard skipping 2 days of Minicamp to graduate

Submitted by canzior on

Title says it all.  Denard will attend minicamp today in Jacksonville, today, then will head to Ann Arbor for graduation tomorrow.  Gotta love this kid, even though it's no surprise.

Will miss him in A2

First, it's great to see him get his degree.  That's a credit to him, first and foremost, but also to the coaching staff.  And it likely speaks well of his family, too, as this sort of action typically bespeaks a family putting a premium on education.  I wonder whether I would have been able to focus enough to finish college with an NFL career on the near horizon and lots of other distractions that come along with BMOC status.

Second, it sends a great message to young athletes starting college.  If Denard Freakin' Robinson can stay focused enough to get his degree, with all the distractions he's had, then maybe this "school" thing is important after all.

Third, it shows that while his dream may be to play in the NFL (and he's well on the way), he treats school as a priority and graduation as a big event.  It's not just getting his degree, but the message that education is important.  After the fact i wonder which event will be more memorable for him.  Graduation, or getting drafted.

We'll miss you, Denard.  And I forgive you (along with some of your UofM brethern also on the team) for tempting me to watch Jaguars games this fall.

"Hey, Mom! Lets watch the video of my college graduation! I want to see me and my frat bros being stupid again!"

"Oh, honey, uh... I don't think you're on that video."

"Wha... wait. What?"

"Well, that was the last chance I was ever going to have to get video of Denard on the field at The Big House!"

and props to the Jags for allowing it - I'm not sure all No Fun League teams would.

I'll be there watching my son and his buddy Denard step into the real world. Denard is everybody's buddy.

What makes this even more meaningful, I believe, is that this will be the fulfillment of a promise he made to himself and his family and even in the midst of all the NFL-related activities, it is one that he would always say he fully intended to keep. The education came first through all of that, it seemed. I seem to recall that even during his recruitment, he was very clear about this promise too, and now that day is tomorrow.

I think that not only future students and student-athletes should take note of this, but also his teammates on the Jaguars - this is one highly motivated, high-character individual who has managed his time and priorities exactly as you would expect a professional in their field to manage them.

It is the effective end of Denard's journey at Michigan, but the beginning of a new chapter and I wish him nothing but success.

From Detroit News:

Robinson, a fifth-round pick making the transition from quarterback to running back, took the majority of repetitions with the first-team offense and even upstaged first-rounder Luke Joeckel.

With maize-and-blue clad fans cheering his moves, Robinson broke several long runs and caught all but one pass thrown his way. He lined up at running back, fullback and receiver.

How great would it be if Jac actually had the right idea about how to use Denard? I just assumed when he went there, that he would languish in a bad orginization, as opposed to one that would know how to maximize his talents. Actually being able to develop as a skill player in that system would be his biggest achievement yet. Though they have used MJD to great success so far, maybe Denard is the guy that can build on what they have done at the RB spot already.

I live in Jax and saw Denard on the local news tonight.  He was talking about how important a four year college education is to him.  He'll be the first in his family to achieve this goal and he'll be a good influence on the rest of the family.  If he can do it, they can do it.....that sort of thing.

that time flying to Ann Arbor and back and missing some camp?  Just slip on some football spikes and sprint there and back!

Congrats to Robinson.  He and his family should be proud. Nice gesture by the Jacksonville organization for realizing this important accomplishment.
