I always thought he looked about 5'10". Hoping for the best as he gave us so much joy. Really anxious to see his 40 time.
Denard Robinson NFL Combine
I'm surprised by the 5'10" thing. I was right next to him once and thought he was pretty much the same height as me. I'm 5'11 3/4" (but always just round up to 6'0").
Im pretty sure they measure bare foot
If he's 5' 10" then Vince Smith must actually be about 5' 4"
As a member of 5'8 nation, he is definitely over 5'9. I think 5'10-5'11 is about right since I ws pretty much right next to him a few weeks ago at his autograph signing.
"I think 5'10" - 5'11" is about right?"
This quite the thread. OP posts Denard's combine measurements from today and is followed by a bunch of people guessing his height. Could everybody else who has ever stood next to Denard or at least knows someone who knows someone who has please chime in with an estimate? Yeesh...
I'm feeling like D-Rob can run a sub 4.3 in the 40. That should help him get drafted.
It would be really great to see Denard run under 4.3, but I'm thinking it's more likely he'll end up in the 4.4 range. Usually top-end speed is a function of running with controlled technique as much as effort. I'm thinking the immense pressure will take a few ticks off his time as he may paradoxically try a bit too hard to be fast, if that makes any sense.
He should still put up a very respectable time if he's healthy. If he runs sub 4.4 in that environment with all eyes on him, I'll be amazed.
Just my humble opinion.
I'd be amazed if he didn't run a sub 4.4 forty
Considering its laser timed I'd be amazed if he ran sub 4.4. Hand timed I can see it but you can't fake the laser
When is he scheduled to run the 40? I'm looking forward to seeing what his time will be.
There's no set schedule it will be completely random. I'm sure they will show it because he's spotlighted there. A good showing and he can put him self solidly in the second round.
I remember the first year I had NFL Network I was so excited to watch the combine. Honestly it was one of the most boring things I had ever seen.
I remember years ago thinking this is going to be so awesome to watch and it was awful.
Here's a link to ESPN's Sports Science profile of Denard.
Some of the highlights:
He's been timed at 4.32 in the 40 (I say that's 0 out of 5 fakes)
Within 4 strides, he's already up to 11 MPH.
In the open field, he reaches 22 MPH
He can decelerate so quickly that he exerts over 3 G's on his body (that's the same amount of force astronauts experience during lift-off)
For more comparison with Best (meant to reply below) - since they are the same size and both have track backgrounds - Javid Best ran a 10.36 100m and I think Denard's best 100m was 10.44 so one could conclude that their 40 times should be close as well.
5'10" 199 is pretty solid. I really think he should be looked at as a RB over WR. The way the Lions used Jahvid Best (who was also 5'10" 199lbs) would be a good strategy with Denard. There would be less of a learning curve for him than WR and he'd get the ball 10-15 times a game rather than 2-3.
Just please don't let the Lions draft him and ruin him.
From WikiPedia, Best's measurables are nearly identical to Denard's:
|Ht||Wt||Arm length||Hand size||40-yd dash||10-yd split||20-yd split||20-ss||3-cone||Vert||Broad||BP||Wonderlic|
|5 ft 10 in||199 lb||31¾ in||9 in||4.35 s||1.48 s||2.05 s||4.17 s||6.75 s||32.5 in||9 ft 5 in||18 reps||24|

It feels so weird to look at Denard as a carbon copy of Best. Denard looks all of 6' out there, whether on TV or in person.
It has clearly been evident that he wasn't 6 foot. Hell, the announcers talked about it all the time. They always spoke about him having a disadvantage not being able to see over the offensive line. And if you ever got the chance to be close around him you could tell he wasn't 6 foot. I got a high 5 from him on Bourbon Street in New Orleans after the Sugar Bowl.
Of course he didn't wash his hand. What do you think the Glove is for?
for most players who are actually under 6'. Hell, they listed Jamie Morris at 5'7¨ his entire career, and if you've ever stood next to the man, you immediately know he can be no taller than 5'5¨.
I hope he ends up on whatever team Woodson will be on.
Do you know when Shoelace will make his two 40 yard dashs ?
Can't wait to see him. If he wants to be draft in day 2 he will need a pretty good time.
Seems like he would be much more useful as a Javid Best like speed back without the concussions of course.
But he's not Rich Eisen fast.
Love that even the Offensive Lineman was faster than him. LOL
a.k.a. former Alabama DT "Mt. Cody" at 340 lbs (if he kept one leg off the scale).
I'd love to see Denard superimposed on there. I'm pretty sure he could carry Vincent Smith on his back and win that race spotting Eisen a 10-yard head start.
A more competitive race would be Eisen vs. Hoke. I'd go with Eisen by about 3 yds.
Thanks for clarifying...just saw he was huge and assume OL.
Anyone know if Denard trained for the combine with Barwis or anyone else?
If he trained with anyone it was either barwis or the strength and conditioning at UM. He has been a a few basketball games, so he didn't go down to IMG or any of those combine prep camps.
He trained with dilithium.
Dilithium trained with HIM.
He trained with the Wellman and the rest of the S&C team at UM.
I might be wrong, but I think the fastest 40 a Michigan player has run at the combine was Leon Hall with a 4.38. I think Denard has a chance of beating that and becoming the fastest Wolverine in the history of the combine.
People really underrate hall as a CB and for his athletic ability. He is really just behind the "elite" corners in the nfl. Maybe he's top 10?
He was an All-Pro a couple of years ago, and I know he's been injured on and off since. I think people have always gotten on him because he was burned against USC, but that game was a tire-fire from the first snap it seemed.
He's been very , very reliable and performed well year after year. I hate the bengals but I always route for Leon.
I wonder if Denard's 40 time comes in slower than expected we may see him not get drafted? Everyone knows he is a work in progress at WR, so if posts an excellent 40 time someone will take him hoping his ball catching skill develop.
This has nothing to do with Denard or Michigan, but I thought it was funny/interesting considering 3 of them are heading to the NFL and one a probable first-rounder.
Damn, that's hardcore.
I'm thinking he'll run in the 4.4s, which should be pretty good given the circumstances. Denard has great top-line speed, but I also think part of his magic is his change of direction and shiftiness. He's not a speed-freak athlete like you'll see sometimes, but he's one of those "gametime fast" guys that tend to play in the league while the tap-measure guys struggle.
Because I would say the exact opposite. I can only think of a couple times Denard juked people. Usually it was a straight run outside where he just ran by everyone. The only question on his time will be does he get a good start.
You've got to be kidding. He's projected as high as the 3rd round.
So was Donovan Warren.
He ran a very slow 40 time which is a draft killer for DBs
Crossed paths with Denard several times on Campus. He's 5'10" (my height).
I was really concerned that they can't measure height at the combine. This allays my fear that Denard has been shrinking.
I see what you did there
My prediction: 4.36 (that's without the shoes tied obviously)
Denard Robinson just ran a 4.34 40. Speed was never an issue tho.
