Just my opinion, but,

Just my opinion, but, well:

  1. The team
  2. The city
  3. The uniform
  4. The ineptitude (yes, I'm a Lions fan, so this is an irrational statement)
  5. The state
  6. The lack of history
  7. The lack of fans in the stadium
  8. The complete ZERO drama watching them play

What to like:

  1. Denard
  2. Henne (although I don't expet to see him on the field, so this doesn't count too much)

Winner:

What to like.  Denard carries a lot of weight, apparently.  Seriously.  I'll be watching the Jaquars in the preseason!  How crazy is that.

Irrational?

4. The ineptitude (yes, I'm a Lions fan, so this is an irrational statement)

Not irrational ... just clear-eyed observation from a fan whose team exemplifies the word "inept."

The complete ZERO drama

The complete ZERO drama watching them play

What kind of drama are you looking for? Fisticuffs on the sidelines?

Given how much parity there is in the NFL, Jacksonville might well be in the playoffs in a year or two.  It's not like MLB where you can basically write off the Royals and Pirates for the next generation.

Jaguar GM's comments on Denard:

(On Denard Robinson) "I've been watching that guy for as long as he's been playing. Every time I go to Michigan it just amazes me about how passionate he is about football, how loved he is at that school amongst his teammates and how he just goes about his business. You watch that guy practice and he has fun. Not only does he have juice on the field in terms of his speed and play-making ability but just juice in the building. You're going to love the kid. I've watched from afar for a long time. I got a call from Thomas (Dimitroff) and he's like, 'I knew you were going to end up getting him at some point in time,' because we talked about him in Atlanta and I was really excited about that pick."

(He's a running back?) "We're going to play him at running back and we're going to play him a little bit at slot so you're going to see him in a lot of different formations. He's a running back just like he's a slot and we're going to use him as a kick returner so we're going to try and get the ball into his hands and that's going to be one of the goals. I've been fortunate enough in my time in Atlanta and my time in Indianapolis to see what playmakers can do for a team and we needed some speed and some explosiveness here."

(On his injuries) "No, nothing major. He's played in the Big Ten, the Big Twelve now, and carried the ball a ton of times and has really been pretty durable for as much as he's played."

(Did not a lot of teams look at him as a running back?) "I've heard all different things. I've heard teams look at him as a running back, as a wide receiver and even as a corner back. We even kicked it around a little bit before the draft just kind of joking knowing our need was a corner back saying, 'Well if we draft him we can use him both ways.' But we're going to stick to him at offense. He is a tremendous athlete."(Are you faster today than you were two days ago?) "Absolutely, yeah."

(Any concerns with Robinson's ability to hold onto the ball at the Combine?) "He's not our finished product by any means. He's played quarterback his whole life so he's going to be a work in progress. I don't expect him to go out there in year one and just have everything down. He's going to have his drops, he may have his fumbles, and that stuff but it's going to be a little bit of a work in progress. We feel like if we can develop him then he can turn into something special."

(Wildcat?) "That's a possibility. We want to get the ball into his hands."

I hate the Jags because they seem like a shitty team thats always shitty i.e. Browns, Lions even though they were actually decent until a few years back. But yea Jacksonville was one of the few teams I didn't want to see Denard go but the bright side is hopefully a lot of his family will get to make the trip from Deerfield Beach up to Jacksonville.

This

The only possible silver lining for this is that Denard gets to be close to home.  Jacksonville is hardly ever on TV, and they're just an awful franchise.  Not to mention the uniforms - Denard has to make the transition from the best uniform in sports (totally unbiased here, guys) to ... teal.  With lots of flair.  Overall, I'm pretty bummed about this.

I love this, because, well I would get to see him too; and that would likely mean the Chargers would not be the team to go to LA.

Nice! Go Denard

Jut notied Philly had the next pick. I wonder if they were hoping to pick up Denard. I know Chip Kelly had great things to say about him.

I really hope he can develop into a Antwaan Randel-El kind of guy

And they do, quite frequently. What will be harder to keep on the sidelines is his vision, cutting ability and patience with the ball in his hand as a runner. Hopefully they don't just stick him in the slot.

Not as close as you might think

Sure, Jacksonville has the least fans in the NFL, and has been terrible in the last couple of years, but people forget just how truly awful the Lions are/have been: there is no comparsion - the Jaguars have a much more relevant recent history.

Lions: 1 playoff win since 1957

Jaguars: 5 playoff wins since 1996 (last one was in 2007).

Never forget -- the Lions have the worst on-field perfomance of any US team in the four big team sports over the last 50+ years. It's not a fun team to be "your" team, as any Lions fan will tell you.

Im really surprised and maybe even a little upset for the kid that it took this long. Tebow went in the freakin 1st rd and Pat White went in the 2nd. Denard is better than both...

And really don't like him but I do know he got the broncos to the playoffs and won a game. Plus he was one of the best college football players of his decade. Even if you don't like a dude you gotta give him his due. I always thought Jacksonville had every reason to gran him and give him a shot. What do they have to lose? One more game?

Tebow won a Heisman, had

Tebow won a Heisman, had better passing numbers than Denard, scored more touchdowns, and took his NFL team to the playoffs as a QB.  Denard has to change positions because teams don't want him as a QB, and it's unclear whether he'll be a RB, WR, DB, or returner.  I think it's a little misleading/presumptuous to say that Denard is better than Tebow, although time will tell...

TEBOW CANT PLAY!!!

The dude's practices have become legendary for being so pathetic. Thats why the Jets never put him on the field, the Broncos traded him and the Jets cant get rid of him. I will give you his college resume, but his professional career is pedestrian at best save a few lucky wins...

Your original comment

Your original comment referred to Tebow's draft position, which would have been based on his college resume. It's not like the Bronco's drafted him in the first because they heard about his future practices with the Jets.

Also, to your original point, if Tebow and White were both not worth their 1st and 2nd round picks, why would a team turn around and Denard at a similar position? Doesn't your comment actually directly address why teams might be gun shy about picking Denard?

The difference is...

A) Teams knew Tebow couldnt play coming out of college thats why it was such a surprise when he was drafted in the first rd.

B) Denard was a much better playmaker as a runner than Tebow and slightly better than Pat White.

C) Denard made no beefs about playing QB unlike the other 2 which was suppose to improve his draft stock

I love Tebow...

I was only speaking of the drastic difference from a 1-2nd rd pick to a 5th. Denard isnt the first to make this switch, and I cant recall a player as dynamic as Denard going this low in a long time.

You keep mentioning these

You keep mentioning these failures that went early, and yet you seem to expect NFL teams to continue drafting the types of super-athletic guys high in the draft who have failed in the past.

Maybe teams are learning from their past mistakes and not wasting high picks on position-changing tweeners...

This is like arguing Dilfer

This is like arguing Dilfer vs. Marino.  Dilfer won a Super Bowl, whether you like him or not; Marino didn't win a Super Bowl, regardless of his stats.

Tebow had a better college career than Denard.  And despite the fact that he's a backup right now, he has a better NFL career to this point.  If Denard gets cut by the Jaguars and never latches on, Tebow will be a better player in just about every regard except rushing yards.

Pat White was drafted by a

Pat White was drafted by a team that featured the single wing/wildcat formation as part of their offensive attack and Tebow was one of the most decorated and successful quarterbacks in NCAA history.

The gimmicky nature of the Wildcat makes Pat White look like a bad pick for the round he was taken, but to the Dolphins it made perfect sense at the time.

As for Tebow, well...as of now he has won just as many division banner and ONE MORE PLAYOFF GAME for the Broncos than Peyton Manning.

I'm not saying Denard couldn't have higher than thefifth round; a few years earlier he might have, based on the White/Tebow picks. But Denard may still have a bit of a wonky hand, too.

I'm glad he got drafted and will play pro ball in his home state. I wish he could've been picked by a better team, but you've gotta believe that he'll have a better chance of making (and contributing) on Jacksonville's roster than most.

Yeah...

As someone who has never really rooted for an NFL team, I kept telling everyone that my loyalty was up for auction in this draft. I'll stand by what I said, but I was definitely hoping it would be a team that would make it easy on me.

Congrats to Denard on what I'm sure is a special day.

Probably not.

I spend almost all of my time watching college sports (Red Wings are the only exception) so the amount of time I'll spend rooting for Jacksonville while he's there probably won't be enough to form the kind of bond most people have with their team.

Wasn't drafted there. They got him last year. He was drafted by Miami. So you are a huge fan of a team after "following" them one year.

Because they need offensive weapons? Both these guys can create their own yardage which is key on a team that doesn't have a QB who can't do it got them.

They just seem like redundant picks. Obviously it's up in the air how Robinson will be used (especially with Jacksonville drafting him as a RB), but they seem like they'd be playing very similar roles.

But no argument that Denard can make something out of nothing, which is something a team like Jacksonville can appreciate.

A bit more complicated than that, apparently

Caldwell said Robinson will be used at RB, slot WR and KR. #jaguars

— Ryan O'Halloran (@ryanohalloran) April 27, 2013

O'Halloran is a Jags beat writer for the Florida Times-Union; Caldwell is the Jags' general manager. Another interesting nugget:

Caldwell said "lack of speed" on roster jumped out at them when they got here.

— Ryan O'Halloran (@ryanohalloran) April 27, 2013

EDIT:

Caldwell -- using Robinson as Wildcat QB a "possibility." #jaguars

I think something we always forget with these guys is that they had their choice of destinations for college, and then they have no control in the Draft. It has to be a very nervewracking experience.

Yes, it's an honor to play in the NFL, but it's tough to have no control over the situation you enter into.

Great Decision for the Jags

So happy Denard got drafted.  Now I hope he gets playing time.

I'm so confused by the Draft.  Why did the best athlete in college football have to wait until the 5th round to get drafted while the Honey Badger gets drafted in the 3rd?  They're both transcendent talents and a little small for their positions.  Except Denard didnt have to go to rehab for weed.

Matthieu has played his

Matthieu has played his expected NFL position extensively in college, and has played it at a high level with a lot of evidence for playmaking abilities. Denard is a playmaker, but he's switching positions, and has barely played his new positions at all. Yeah, Denard doesn't have a drug problem, but undoubtedly there will be clauses in the Matthieu's contract which demands random weekly drug tests, counseling meetings, etc.

You are being sarcastic, right?

Denard has no true position to play, basically got drafted as an athlete who might play RB or KR. He will find success, but it might not be what you are envisioning.

Great, but not the best

I think this is quite a bit of homerism... While Denard is a great athlete, and one of the best to ever wear the maize and blue, he's hardly the best athlete in the draft. Athletic ability is defined by more than just speed, but even if it weren't, he's not even the fastest player in the draft either.

On a side note : Being drafted to this team, he may get to play QB after all, lol.

Jags drafted Ace Sanders

Jags drafted Ace Sanders right before. Insanely happy for Denard, but Ace has a leg up on Denard already. Unless they choose to use Denard as a RB instead of slot guy. Ace will probably be the kick returner and punt returner. Hopefully Denard can get that other returner spot and find a role in Jacksonville. Awesome that he's back in his home state.

Maurice Jones Drew is pretty good

"Maurice Jones-Drew told NFL Network he plans to be at full speed "by probably the end of May, beginning of June." Jones-Drew is still rehabbing from a Lisfranc fracture in his left foot that required surgery in December" "

Jones-Drew had at least 1,600 total yards in each of his previous three seasons before 2012 when he held out of training camp and ultimately got hurt after six games. Some will be afraid to draft the 28-year-old but most owners should go ahead and consider Jones-Drew a Top 15 running back for now, making him worth a pick between 20th and 30th overall in drafts assuming he is a full participant in Jags camp. That seems to be on pace to happen. ""

-from cbssports.com

MJD is getting a little long in the tooth...shortly Denard may be their best RB

Jacksonville is the team the

Jacksonville is the team the NFL has identified as the most likely "London" team, at least partly because of their lack of success in Jacksonville as a franchise.  IIRC they are going to start playing a few games per year in the not too distant future and if all goes well relocate permanently.

The new owner has no ties to Jacksonville and is reportedly fully on board.

Denard could be a big hit over there.

I think Jacksonville has

I think Jacksonville has signed a deal to play one game per year in London for the next 4 years. Each game being a home game, since they obviously can't sell tickets. Would not be shocked to see them shipped off to LA in the next few years, or to London in the next 5-10 years.

He was interviewed by some espn guy and looked even less enthused than when they announced it. Even the interviewer was a little perplexed. He probably is sad to leave Ann Arbor (maybe wanted to go to Detroit?). He seemed to really love A2. He certaily isn't the kind of player who would openly put up his nose at a team that isn't that great.

I'm really happy he'll get to play in Florida until the Jags are inevitably relocated. They're not the Dolphins, but I imagine it'd be similar to one of us going out of state to play football and getting drafted by the Lions. Great coming home party for him

Northerners should stop

Northerners should stop acting like they live in some racially-enlightened paradise and that the South in still in the 19th century.  A lot of black people will tell you that racism is as bad - if not worse - in the North than in the South nowadays.  The most segregated metro areas in the U.S. are pretty much all in the Northeast and Midwest.

Congratulations To Denard...

It's been said in various places on the board, but it is worth repeating - any team which picked him up was getting a great athlete, a hard worker and someone who can step into a leadership role on a team. Anytime you get all three of these in a player, you've just upgraded. Like others, I will admit to having watched a handful of Jacksonville games before now, but as a Michigan fan, how cool will this be to watch Denard at the next level? Pretty cool, I think.

Congratulations to Denard Robinson!

Congrats to Denard! Would

Congrats to Denard! Would have loved to see if the eagles would have taken him with the next pick but it was also possible that he could have fallen further - this might not be a bad situation as it is his home state and the Jags need playmakers (lots if them) and he could make an impact at RB/WR or even KR/PR. Also the chance of a Henne/ Denard backfield would be awesome!

I live in the Jax area and this is fantastic news! Can't wait to get the brand new jersey and see him flying down the sideline at Everbank field!

Really happy for Denard.

Not much of a fan of the Jags, but I'm glad he can say he was drafted into the NFL.

Hopefully, he will be able to make some better memories than the last time he was down there...

Way to go Denard !

Jaguars GM comments on Denard:

Denard's reaction.

Apparently, the Lions called Denard and told him they were going to be picking him with the next pick. Then Denard got the call from the Jaguars. That might explain his semi-awkward reaction. You never see the kid without a huge smile on his face....

Makes sense

And there's a video interview on the Jags' site where he's smiling a lot more.  As was the interviewer.  (Is it Eisen? It's taken from somewhere else, perhaps the NFL.com coverage, but it's obviously somebody from Michigan.)  When guy-who-may-be Eisen ends the interview with "Go Blue," Denard answers "Go Blue" and then quickly adds "Go Jags!"  Guy-who-may-be-Eisen's off-screen sidekick says to his partner, "You Michigan guys are so quick!"

Feeling better about his happiness both from that and the GM's interview quoted above (he's obviously followed DR intently), and feeling better about my happiness because I see the Jags are coming to play the Jets in preseason and I now have a reason to scout E-bay for an affordable ticket.

Congrats to Denard

I actually liked the Jags back in the 90's when they beat Elway and the Broncos. Hope he does well there.

Congratulations to Denard!

Brace yourself for the ups and downs of long-distance Jaguars fandom, heart. I'll put you on the shelf between Cleveland Browns fandom and absinthe.

This is actually a good situation for Denard

Yeah, the Jaguars have been a crappy franchise for a while now, mediocre fanbase, etc. But there's a lot to like for Denard in this situation:

1) He gets to play fairly close to home, at least until the Jags' inevitable relocation.

2) The Jags are a team on the rise. Granted, they have almost nowhere to go but up, but hear me out. They have a new GM, Dave Caldwell, who's been a scout and player personnel guy in Indy and Atlanta, where he learned from two of the best GMs in the business, Bill Polian and Tom Dimitroff. Second, they've got a promising new coach in Gus Bradley, who's been coordinating Seattle's excellent D the past few years. And third, they had what on first glance is a solid draft -- they got their franchise LT in Joeckel, a guy who might turn out to be the best safety in this draft (Cyprien), and two dynamic playmakers in Ace Sanders (whose abilities we know very well from the Outback Bowl) and Denard.

3) It not only sounds like the GM is in love with Denard and has had his eye on him for a while -- it also appears the Jags want to play Denard at the position where a lot of people think he has the best chance to succeed in the league -- RB.

4) Another advantage to being on a (currently) crappy team -- Denard will be assured of getting the time he needs to switch to a new position and adjust to pro football. If he had gone to a team with more talent on its roster, he'd be under more pressure to prove his value on the field more immediately or risk losing his roster spot. That will not be a problem with the Jags.

Local Media In Jax

are rightfully so, thrilled with the idea of having a player like Shoelace. I live in Jax and the local sports figure-heads are all the time on Denard. They're playing radio coordinator with so much "juice!" I caught myself just sitting in the driveway waiting for a commercial break, it's so great to hear. The city has just a little bit more pep in it's step with him coming here. Awesome! Capital 'A'!!!
