With Denard at Quaterback, I fear no third down

Submitted by bsand2053 on

I have never been more confident on third down situations in all my football watching life.  That was something else.  14 of 19 on the day.  I can't remeber ever seeing a conversion rate that good.

Why can't someone be happy about a great performance after the last 2 years? It's awesome to know we can thrown on 1st and run on third (and long, too), if we need to.  The problem with 'Lace was that he was too predictable- now he's not.  I feel much better about our conversions now, too.

It's easy to call an opponent overrated to mitigate what the victors accomplish, but why would anyone want to do that today?

Very impressive.  Possibly the best I've ever seen by an M team.

Robinson is insane.  There were third and longs and when you see run at first you're like ugh and you blink and it's a first down.  He not only hits holes lightening fast but fights for those last 2 yards that make a difference.

The UConn defense was suspect but our O-line looked great, the coaching was outstanding, and Robinson has the potential to make opponents' coaches look at each other with their shoulders shrugged.  Hold on because we're going to control many games with our lethal offense this year.

There were many moments in this game in which I thought we were headed for (possessional) doom and then we got off the mat and converted.  The 2nd and 23 on our first possession.  The 2nd and 19 (?) after Shaw took a huge loss.  The 3rd and 11 to start the third quarter.  The 2nd and 14 when Gardner was in the game.   This game showed that we have crazy big-play potential.  When we get our downfield passing game going more, we'll be scary.

The 3rd down % that we had today is probably completely unsustainable. However, that should be balanced out by a few more big plays. We'll play teams that are a lot more aggressive than UConn, especially after they watch the game tape today. Denard seemed to react pretty quick under the little pressure he did have today, so I like our chances to break a few more big plays in future games to balance out a normal 3rd down conversion rate.

I'd agree with your take on that.  I didn't expect us to sustain long drives like we did today, but hit more long runs and big pass plays.  UConn seemed to play into that, maybe thinking we'd kill ourselves with mistakes.  Interesting to see how that plays out, can't wait to see some easy throws over the top once teams start getting aggressive.

Don't get a big dick about beating on a bad UCONN team. I mean yeah great we won. We need to focus on ND. That will show us a lot more of what this team is made of. Yay 1-0. Lets not get a big dick however.

No, weren't too bad all in all, better than I thought they would be.  BUT, we did get some help from bad UConn passes and drops.  We're going to have to play much better against ND with how much talent they have on their team; I have a feeling they won't have nearly as many bad passes and drops.  Still, my feeling of doom about the D isn't has bad as it was leading into todays game, thankfully.

The team needs to look at Notre Dame. It doesn't matter if the fans are dwelling on a pretty damn impressive performance. We've been piled on by opposing fans and media for two years. Let's take advantage of the moments when there's actually nothing bad you can say about us.

with all those 3rd an 1's.  I'll take them all day...  Give me the choice of 1st and 10, or 3rd and 1???    Our line is too mature/competent now not to pick that up, 'specially with DRob/Shaw/Smith all as options.

6 x 3rd and 2 or less on the day!!

He was amazing today. I wasn't worried about 3rd downs one bit either. That dude is something special, thank God Coach Rod found him. I think he could be a serious Heisman contender as long as he stays healthy. One word description of his game today: "WOW!"

i like that RR kept him at QB and that people are on board now.  I argued with numerous people countless times last season about how he was the future, and they'd always say he should switch positions.  I'd just like to see what they have to say after this game.

Denard did amazing today, I don't want to take anything away from him but where was Hopkins?  I kinda expected him on 3rd and short but I guess you don't really need it when a QB draw gets you 4-5 yds every time with dilithium in the backfield but still, I was surprised not to see him in the game at all.

I have a sentiment w/ regard to hopkins..

First, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

Simply put, run whats working until they show they can stop it (from the stats you can see they couldnt)

Secondly, never show your cards unless they call.

Simply put, dont run plays/formations/gameplans unless you need to (ND might be slightly unprepared for a power running game/shotgun 4 wide deep routes etc.)

It was quite nice to be on the correct side of 3rd and long scrambles for a first down for a change. Way too used to seeing that happen to Michigan instead of for them. GO BLUE!
