Denard named a semifinalist for O'Brien Award ($)

Here's the link. It's an ESPN Insider article, and I don't have an Insider account, but here's the free blurb:

Junior Denard Robinson was named as one of the semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. Robinson joins seniors Russell Wilson of Wisconsin and Kirk Cousins of Michigan State as Big Ten quarterbacks on the list.

A news release from the University of Michigan states that, “The O'Brien is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. It honors candidates who exemplify Davey O'Brien's enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics.”

I know it doesn't mean much at all at this point, but was he named to this list last year?

Yeah, well... I'm gonna go build my own theme park, with blackjack and hookers. In fact, forget the park!

Devin had too many egregious errors come crunch time.  Denard is magic at crunch time.

Magic at crunch time? I love Denard, so lets get that out of the way. Now, about this magic at crunch time thing. Besides the Notre Dame games, when has he or anyone else been "magical"? We havent beaten a ranked big ten team in years. Again, i love Denard, but lets wait until he can have some success agsinst a top tier big ten team before we annoit him as David Copperfield.

Eh, I don't know about that. Not that I don't love me some Denard, but I think this speaks more to the meaningless of being named an award semifinalist, and less to the skill/performance of Denard.

No matter what though, it's always nice to see him get some good publicity from the national media.

right that Denard should not be taken out of game, but being nominated for an award has nothing to do with it.

U-M press release says he was also a semifinalist last year and that fans can vote to help determine the three finalists:

Oct. 24, 2011

• Vote for Denard

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan football junior quarterback Denard Robinson (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) has been named as one of 16 semifinalists for the 2011 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, the selection committee announced Monday (Oct. 24).

Robinson, a 2010 Davey O'Brien Award semifinalist, has helped lead the Wolverines to a 6-1 start and a No. 17 national ranking. He has completed 76 of 141 passes for 1,253 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 762 yards (108.9 yards per game) and nine touchdowns on 120 carries. Robinson leads the Big Ten with 287.9 total yards per game, and his 16.49 yards per completion leads the NCAA.

Robinson joins Michigan State's Kirk Cousins and Wisconsin's Russell Wilson as Big Ten quarterbacks named as semifinalists for the award. Three finalists will be named on Monday, Nov. 21, and the 2011 Davey O'Brien winner will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 8 on ESPN. Fans may now help determine which three quarterbacks will advance as finalists by voting as often as once daily at www.VoteOBrien.org. Fan voting will close at noon CST on Nov. 20.

The O'Brien is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. It honors candidates who exemplify Davey O'Brien's enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics.

Denard should win it if they actually evaluate the award on the basis of their stated criteria.  Denard has already become the all time favorite player for many life long Michigan fans.  He has certainly thrilled us with his athleticism, but it is his leadership, attitude, and character that will make him an enduring part of Michigan lore.
