I just found this over on r/nfl and wanted wanted to share. I don't think I have ever seen a player listed as an OW, but that seems to fit his game just fine.
Denard Listed as OW (Offensive Weapon) on Jag's Roster
It's amusing if nothing else.. Really hope he does well...
Boy, ain't that the truth.
Weapon of Choice?
Ugh...that just makes me think of Forcer...and RR. I'll stop there before I get started. Luckily it makes me think of Christopher Walker as well which isn't so bad.
all I think of is Fatboy Slim and Christopher Walken:
More like Weapon of Mass Destruction. The NFL won't be able to handle Denard.
WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION!
It's a small thing, but the rigidity of NFL offensive thinking needs to be attacked on all fronts.
They're just innovative in very different ways than the college game (the college game is actually probably more cyclical than innovative in it's own right, it's just got a lot broader spectrum). The only real revalation of late is that they are willing to look to the college game for some different ideas rather than think up new things on their own.
That being said, it will be interesting to see if the rigid NFL front office will allow someone to be at a position called "offensive weapon" rather than one of their defined positions with a defined number.
If they took the pre-determination of player numbers to the extreme of the former World Football League.
Look, Ma! Color-coded pants!
I am in favor of any website that includes the phrase "pants plan."
If the folks at Big Cat Country are to be believed, this is a special creation by the Jaguars for our muti-talented former quarterback. According to their blog, it began as something of a joke in interviews and it has now become his official position, in part because the team didn't seem to feel comfortable listing him just as a running back or wide receiver. If there are players that could be justly listed as an "offensive weapon", Denard Robinson is certainly one of them.
that post on Big Cat Country has exactly 16 comments. Coincidence? I think not...
Denard continues to break barriors. He was an All-American "Back" and in now an OW. Glad he's continued creating new positions.
North Korea probably wanted to draft him.
Ohh but they did. He's just on a transfer (or whatever they call it in soccer) to play for the jaguars.
Now we have an actual position name for it, instead of "Percy Harvin type dude." Go blue.
Actually no, the Jags coaches probably simply witnessed Denard take off and went "holy Shhhhhhhhiiiiiii.....!"
They might as well paint a bullseye on him.
What do you mean?
I think opposing NFL defenses are going to enjoy the challenge of shutting down the leagues only "Offensive Weapon".
Hm, I guess. I don't think opposing defenses care all that much what terminology the Jags use on their roster.
You're probably right as long as the Jags don't promote him as such.
1) The guy had a huge target painted on him while at UM
2) As I understand it, a big part of football in the NFL is creating issues for a defense and then having counter-strategies. The Jags may very well want Ds focusing on Denard so that they can use him as a decoy and the rest of the offense can be more effective. Then, when the D responds to other parts of the Jags O, they can counter-attack with Denard again.
Is a WR/PR, not an OW
I don't think it would be a slight to say he's better at both than Denard.
But Denard can play RB, QB, Wildcat in addition to those positions. Sanders is a straight slot/returner.
I think both will stick in the NFL and succeed
The thing I love about Denard's skill set is outside of QB and Wildcat, you can move him all over the field without messing up the rhythm and timing of the offense.
To me he's also MN - Matchup Nightmare.
I'd play him at RB, FB, Outside WR, Slot, and TE. Just create mismatches all over the field. And because he can play multiple positions...you don't get him subbing in and out tipping off the defense on what is coming.
For me, Denard, the QB and the OL would never leave the field. You can line him up in the backfield and run a regular pass play, you can put him out wide and run MJD...you wouldn't be tipping your hand or giving up anything in either situation.
Then the 1-2 times he is lined up at QB, he actually is a threat to throw the ball.
Both Sanders and Robinson are labelled correctly in my eyes...
one 5th round pick that may be a serious bargain.
According to the roster, he is the only offensive weapon the Jaguars have. #1 at his position already and hasn't even started training camp. Nice.
More like offensive beatstick.
A weapon of mass destruction if he runs/ catches for over 150 yards and scores a rushing, receiving, and special teams TD in one game
Now he can be a religious weapon.
where would I play him on my fantasy football team?
Kicker. That's still an offensive position.
are SOOOO superior, aren't you?
Nice work...this scene is one of my favorites.
Anyone else like me... it continues unabated after the past 3 years, every mention of Denard in any context immediately puts a smile on my face. It's like a drug -- a few moments of unadulterated bliss. Then it passes, reality sets in, and I go back to scowling at my work.
Dude can be the first to get a $200M contract, be named POY for 10 years in a row in the NFL and POY in another sport he doesn't even play, have an NFL team named after him ("The Los Angeles Denardians"), convert to Mormon so that he can marry the world's 5 hottest models at the same time... and yet I still won't think he's getting all the accolades and happiness he deserves.
That level of achievement might be the only situation that would render Fred Jackson unable to conjure up hyperbolic superlatives. Might be.
What does it say about me that my first thought was "shit, how will we deal with that in fantasy football?
Nevermind. I know exactly what it says about me.
EDIT: Apologies for repeated thought. Didn't read all the comments.
With the NFL having certain number for various positions, it only seems fitting that every OW in the NFL wear 16.
Vincent Smith already invented that position 2 years ago.
and explode into space.
Exciting video of future events is headed our way! Fumbles snap and takes it into the end zone!
Wait 'til they get a load of this guy!
Are you sure OW doesn't mean Other Worldly?
Denard being listed as OW is the equivalent of the show Jackass being named "Jackass", neither of them could be any more appropriately named
23 paladin equip him, or will I need to stick with the sword of 1000 truths?
of the skill players for the jaguars. . .
So, do you think Denard could have an identical twin brother who also plays? THAT would be scary.
Denard's career continues! Drafted him for my dynasty league earlier this week. Designed plays just for him...15 to 20 touches a game...count me in!
can't think of a better description for him... and i'm probably gonna have to buy his jersey now.
