Denard is the First.........

Submitted by bighouseinmate on

.......2000/1500 QB in cfb history. He very well might be the first 2500/1500 QB in cfb history as well. Currently, Denard has 2228 yards passing. UM has two games left for him to add to his stats. Averaged out, Denard needs 136yds/game in the remaining two games to reach that mark. As for the next rushing milestone of 2000 yds, that is improbable, particularly given the competition UM faces next week. Currently, Denard is at 1540 yards rushing. In order to reach 2000yds on the season, he needs to average 230 yards/game. Very unlikely.

As a comparison, Cam Newton became the 8th QB to surpass 2000/1000 last week. Denard was the 9th. In order for Newton to surpass 2000/1500 and join Denard at that level, Newton needs 203 more yards rushing, with 3 more games to do it. I think he reaches that milestone.

For another comparison, now that both have played 11 games, there is this:

Player                                       Passing yds   PassTD   Int       Rushing yds       RushTD

Denard                                          2228              16           10              1540                  14

Newton                                          2038              21             6              1297                  17

Kaepernick                                   2412              19             6                981                   16

I included Kaepernick in the stats as he will be the next QB this year to reach the 2000/1000 plateau, although for him it will be the 3rd time he has reached the mark in his career. One thing to add about him is that he has also had Vai Taua, who has surpassed 1000yds rushing 3 straight years now. This is proof that having a stud RB in the backfield with you doesn't necessarily mean the QB won't get rushing yards too, which is the main reason I included his stats.

it's a shame that his record setting day was overshadowed by the relentless wisconsin rushing attack.  this might even be the first board post to mention it.  as a player, denard is staying classy and not putting his efforts above the team's performance.  as fans, we need to show our appreciation for what he has accomplished.  he is a legend in the making.

Cam Newton may have those stats as of this moment - hell, he's having one of the best QB seasons EVER - but I got a feeling when it's all said and done his official statistics will be zeroes across the board for this year.

got to go with jivas, i'm fairly convinced that newton can run for 2 billion yards and pass for another 3 billion and none of it will matter. from what i've been reading around the country, auburn's season will be a blank stat page from this year and the future isn't looking very bright.

Do conference championship and bowl games count in the season statistics for a player? I was under the impression that they refer to Denard as the first regular season player to hit 2000/1500.

How does that work?

According to the FBS Record Book, postseason games now count toward season statistics and records:

Before 2002, postseason games were not included in NCAA final football statistics or records. Beginning with the 2002 season, all postseason games were included in NCAA final football statistics and records.

I don't see why anyone would refer to Denard as the "first regular season player to hit 2000/1500" given that no one has accomplished that feat with or without postseason games.

I wouldn't look at it as a negative, but rather as something to differentiate Denard's achievement from Newton's (when he gets there), because Newton will not have been able to do it in the regular season.  It more or less sets the tone for players who do it in the future: "[Player X] is the first player since Denard Robinson to throw for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,500 yards in the regular season".  It recognizes the difference that including bowl games and championship games has on the record books.

You completely missed my point. I wasn't talking about what people might say in the future if Newton also goes 2000/1500. I was responding to what bklein09 said above: "I was under the impression that they refer to Denard as the first regular season player to hit 2000/1500." Referring to Denard in that way right now makes no sense given that no one else has accomplished that feat.

How many times do we have to be reminded how many conference victories Michigan has, RR has, the team is medoicre, etc, especially by our fellow "fans?"  This team has been overhauled and rebuilt from the ground up.  Don't blame Denard because the defense can't stop anyone.  And don't blame the defense for not having the personnel to do the job this year.

Denard's achievement is Heisman-worthy.  If the defense had been able to contribute enough to produce two more victories, he would still have a legitimate chance at the award.  His year should be celebrated, not criticized.  It's his first year and he was a serious Heisman candidate at the beginning of the year.  That is a great achievement, and is an indication that he could be one of the favorites next year.

He was a part of it - missing the throw on the sure TD comes to mind - but there were multiple drops, and JJ Watt had a great day against both tackles. The goose egg they put up starts and ends with all 11 guys on the field. Denard's late INT included.

And, the O did have one very nice drive that ended in a missed FG in the first half.

Cam's game-by-game stats are up and down.  Some days he rushes for under 50 yards, other days he runs for a ton.   Cam will probably get to 1500, but no guarantees, esp. given the quality of defenses he's going up against the next three games.

Alabama's D holds opponents to 124 yds/game rushing. Overall, Alabama's D is pretty good.

Then there's South Carolina in the SEC championship game. They are holding opponents to 96 yds/game rushing, however, Newton gained 176 yds on them in the first game they played.

It's likely he does break 1500 yds before the bowl game.

but dig deeper we can all realize that a QB that is running for 1500 yards exposes the lack of a running game that Michigan has and how imblanced UM's O.

While UM has one more game, next yea has to show UM with a more balanced Offense. I don't know if that will happen though. Who steps up to become the back? And please don't tell me that it will be a true Freshman D. Hart. If we start to think a true freshman is going fill a big hole, we might as well just start dong punching ourselves.

Because of this Cam Newton pay-to-play craziness, they probably won't give him the Heisman because of a fear of him being inelligible. The Heisman trust comittee took i away from Reggie because he was inelligible and now that year's Heisman is vacated, so they probably won't give it to Newton for that same reason: the worry of this year's Heisman being vacated. Soooo, that opens a lot of possibilities up.

Do you guys think Denard will at least get an invite to the Heisman ceremony? Im sure a lot will depend on THE GAME next week, but to be the first qb to reach 2,000/1,500 is pretty impressive. Yes, he has thrown a lot of pics and his team is mediocre compared to the rest of the field, but I think he should get some cosideration to be a finalist.

What I love about Denard is he's a QB who knows his role - he knows that he has receivers and a line that are making his stats look even better. He's the best skill player we have, but he fully understands that all that he's done this year is a reflection on his teammates too.

And that's why I love this kid!!!

But did you watch the offense during the first half?  They were completely ineffective and that starts with the QB being tentative and making poor decisions.

Hmmm...the word that comes to mind here is "comeback", which usually means the offense , being down, pulls together to outscore the opposition - while the defense holds the opposition to fewer points in the comback period.  In 2008 we were down by 19 points but outscored Wisky down the stretch to be able to win the game.  Great comeback!  Yesterday we put up 28 points in the second half but unlike in 2008 Wisky just kept scoring and scoring.  When teams pull of dramatic comebacks quarterbacks are touted as miracle workers, ala Joe Montana at ND, but when combacks fall short that same quarterback may achieve goat status.

i thought the announcing team was suprisingly fair when they did the side by side comparision of cam newton and denard during the broadcast yesterday. The numbers as shown are closer than the average fan probably would think, though unspecified points probably go to newton through the big bad SEC HYPE MACHINE.

Off the field while one party's being investigated for peddling their services for the approximate yearly salary of physicians assistant *cough* allegedly *cough* the other maintains a demeanor and attitude that makes you wonder if he gets nervous talking women.

How much more likeable can this kid get, and with more exposure and improvement, how could people not jump on his bandwagon.

Fact - stats achieved while at the Unviversity of Michigan!  Fact - He is a super exciting player!  Fact - DRob is not cam newton and has represented his family, university and family WELL! Fact - Denard has a lot to learn with improvements to make!  Semi-Fact (ok well maybe mho) -  when he does make improvements we will, put more pressure on other O's to score and probably get that team somewhat out of their flow, his improvements and leadership will push the running back to higher hieghts as well as push the recieving core to be more consistent in catching balls, our D will be one year/experience older and will not look up at the score board and see that they are down a touchdown, oh man now we are down two (rear end holes start to tighten) oh $(#()(* we are down three!  all this translates IMHO to greater success!  that is what we are looking for and i believe these improvements are on the horizon!  Go Blue beat osu!
