Demetrius Hart Blowing Up
According to Rivals, Hart now has around 25 offers and has recently received offers from Texas, Florida, Auburn, West Virginia, and Cincinnati.

The story focuses on his ties to Notre Dame through Lo Wood. I know he has been considered a lock on this site in the past, but I wonder if that feeling has changed as of late. Personally, I love his film and he looks absolutely dynamic.

The comment, "I might go up there for a game on an official visit" doesn't exactly make it seem like N.D. is under serious consideration.

According to our friend Irish, we'll be losing the likes of Arnett and others to ND since Kelly passes 154% of the time, while Michigan will have to settle for all the RB prospects since we run the ball 172% of the time.
So I'm not worried about Kelly when it comes to RB's.:)

five years in South Bend. His type of recruit is never going to fly there. They will be decent but "Notre Dame isn't a place you go to be decent."

His ties with Ricardo Miller are much stronger then they are with Lo Wood, so we have that advantage. I think Dee Hart is being political right now in being "open" in the end he will be blue.

Nobody is a lock this far out. However, he has pretty close ties to UM as well. I believe he is close friends with Ricardo Miller and Marvin Robinson. We've also been recruiting him for a very long time and have made it clear by this that he is a priority. All this is in our favor, I think.

That specifically tackles the issue of him being a "lock". He is not. Search for the thread, there was a lot of good discussion. He's come right out and said that he has no leader, and it's not like that's just recruit speak. He's never been shy in the past about saying that U of M is his favorite. In fact, he's said in the past that he'd most likely commit here. When he says he has no leader and that schools like Alabama and Florida interest him, there is absolutely no reason to consider him a lock. I think that Michigan does still have a fairly good chance with him though. Despite all of these other offers, Michigan is probably in his top 3.

I agree on the basis that nobody is a lock until we receive a LOI.
However, his comment was "Of course, they are my top team. I don't think I will commit now, but I will commit later to Michigan."
Obviously this is no absolute guarantee, but I assume it would require 50+ hostesses for him to change his mind.

This article was written well before he said that he had no leader. I indirectly referenced this article already when I said that Hart has said in the past that he intended to commit to Michigan. He has since changed his mind. Who knows where his recruitment will go? But when I said that we are no longer his top school, that was not speculation, it was fact, coming directly from his own mouth.

I'm just saying that once someone makes the comment, "I will commit to Michigan", it's a bit different than saying "I intend to commit to Michigan."
It's safe to assume we are his leader until he explicitly says he likes another school more. Everyone claims to be "wide open" before taking visits.

In fact, I would go as far as saying we're still probably his favorite. With both Laquentin Smith and Hesean Clinton-Dix also being heavily recruited by Michigan, and both having a lot of interest to boot, I think it would be pretty hard to not be a favorite. But, again, because he hasn't been shy in the past about naming us as his favorite, at all, I think that when he says that he has no leader it means that he really is seriously considering his options at the very least.

Don't read into this for anything, but I have a feeling this is going to be one of those years where people have that, "if we could have gotten him," feeling.
Not necessarily with Demetrius Hart, but it seems like we're in on a lot of top kids that could border line go different ways.

I'm just glad we're attracting hordes of top prospects again. Reminds me of the good ole days. This program is mysteriously gaining traction, despite its recent woes. You can sense that from all the recruiting bits on the nets.

Signing day 2011 is a whole freaking year away, and that's a lifetime in the recruiting biz. Ain't no such thing as a lock right now.

IIRC, Derrick Bryant was also a "lock" for the 2010 class near the beginning of the cycle.

If we do well this year on the field, I think we could have a monster class. I'm worried that if we struggle again, it will be very difficult to win recruiting battles because of RR's job security. What we do on the field is all that matters at this point. If we do well and don't get Hart, we'll get someone else almost as good.

shaw may be the favorite to handle a bulk of the carries with smith coming off injury, but the hype train for toussaint is in full effect. hart has stated on multiple occasions that playing time will be a significant factor in his decision. if toussaint takes off and has the season many hope/expect then that could play a role in hart's eventual decision. of course, for michigan this would be good and bad news, but i'm one of those bird in the hand is worth two in the bush types. give me a great season from one of the young backs on the roster and hope hart focuses on the great success of the running game and not the young talent that comprises it.

Of course. I hope that no one would ever hope that the current team plays poorly so that we can sell a recruit with on how we have a favorable depth chart.

He's not a lock. That said, I think we have as good a chance as anyone. His personal ties to our program, the amount of time we've been after him, and the mutual fit between him and our program make us the favorite at this point.
I'm sold on him, we just need to sell him on us.

The longer he goes without committing to us the more skeptical I am that he will actually sign with us. He was suppose to be a verbal last summer, then in the fall, and then in December. I just doubt more and more he will come to Michigan each day and I think a large part that feeling has to do with my hopes being built up 8-10 months ago and nothing coming of it. I hope he goes go blue but I must admit that I'm a little worried after the past couple months of built up expectations.

What makes the situation worse, is that each time we expected a commitment from him, was when he was coming to Michigan to visit. Each time he left Ann Arbor without committing. I don't know what anyone else thinks, but when a recruit expects to commit to a school and then actually visits and doesn't commit, that's a bad sign. I would interpret that as meaning that a visit gave him second thoughts, instead of impressing him as it should have done.

Hart has always maintained that he was going to take a full slate of visits. Just because we were expecting a commitment doesn't mean we are doomed because it didn't happen.
I read that he was going to commit on his last unofficial, but Ricardo advised him to take his visits in order to come in with no regrets.

I'm just pointing out the obvious sign to take from that situation, that the visits gave him second thoughts. There's nothing else to take from the situation. And I AM NOT saying that this means he doesn't want to come to Michigan. It just means that it probably made him decide to look around. I don't know who could possibly argue that this is a good thing. It's not. Does it mean that we're doomed? Not at all. Which is why I said in my above post that I still think we're probably in Hart's top 3. But when you have a recruit that's ready to commit and then doesn't, it's definitely a negative.

Maybe he is playing out his recruitment like Cullen Christian. He might want to move up the rankings by hitting many camps before committing.

With his dad's ties to former ND players I never really got the feeling he was a lock.
Parker on the other hand even took photos with the other M commits at the Army AA game per S. Webb on the RR and I was pretty confident in him.
One thing to remember about Hart is he has came up here on his own dime the past two seasons. Let the kid take a couple trips if that is what he wants. I hope he becomes a Wolverine in the end, but I'll wish him well if he doesn't.

We seem to be in on a lot of top kids, but last year seemed the same. Then rankings come out, things settle down, offers start to slow down (or never come at all), and it turns out that the kid we were all hyped up about isn't that good in the first place.
Ricardo Miller? He was a 5-star lock...who turned out to be a 3-star with questionable speed.
Lo Wood? He was going to be a big-time player who was certainly coming to Michigan...who ended up a Notre Dame 3-star.
Marcus Rush? He'd jump at the chance to play for Michigan...ended up at MSU.
Remember when we all cared about Derrick Bryant?

exactly for anyone to get their hopes up so high this early into a recruiting year just sets you up for large disappointment. Calling anyone a lock this early is just foolish, unless they're a legacy, living down the street from the stadium with a giant "M" tattooed on their arm, UM is really not in position to have any "Locks" this early. And that's for a variety of reasons, no one should hinge this coming recruiting class on the outcome of any one lock of a recruit.

Here's a little nugget for you. I never thought this was relevant, but I'll tell you all this now.
I talked/talk to Derrick Bryant pretty frequently. He still tells me how big of a Michigan fan he is. He told me that one day he was sitting in the car with his dad, and he pulled his phone out to call Michigan and commit. His dad looked at him, and told him he wanted him to check out UCLA, and the rest is history.
I still think that he would rather have chosen Michigan, but he says he had to do what's best for him. I don't know what that means, but whatever.

That's an interesting tidbit. It's interesting to think of how the recruiting cycle might have turned out if he had committed. Perhaps another defensive end wouldn't have come, or maybe we never would have pursued Clarence Murphy.
Oh well. I'm pretty happy with the class we got.

Everyone who says its early and no one is a lock until the LOI is right.
Everyone who made up depth charts with Tony Grimes, Calvin Murphy, Sean Parker and other "silent commitments" is wrong.

"Of course, they (Michigan) are my top team..." is about as solid as it can be at this point. The "of course" clause is HUGE. He could have said, "Well, for now they are my top team." He said it as though there shouldn't be any doubt as to who his favorite is.
