The school as of 2008 enrolled more than 15,000 students in 1,900 college courses. It has a state-of-the-art library, Spectrum Theatre, an Applied Technology center and a student center called Bostick Commons. It also operates the Michigan Technical Education Center in nearby Holland, Michigan. Two other satellite programs offer training in manufacturing, auto service, and building and construction trades in Ottawa, Canada, and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Not necessarily the athletic department -- maybe someone in academic counseling who is (or was) advising him and his family. I mean, Demar's case was unusual (one of three similar cases along with Witty and Jones) -- he signed a NLI and at the time it sounded (from statements Demar made) that someone was working with him to try and help him qualify and clear Admissions -- it didn't work out, but it's not hard to imagine them proposing the GRCC route in the aftermath. Fast forward to this winter, after things don't work out elsewhere, and Demar decides to go ahead and try GRCC.

The fact is, this is one of the only community colleges where, if one's grades are good -- and I mean really good, not just the minimums -- it is possible to transfer to Ann Arbor. Hoke talks all about redemption and "touching" the lives of players -- if Demar can hold up his end of the bargain, this could be a chance for Hoke to prove that it is not just empty talk.

I really hope that Demar gets his stuff together, earns his AA degree and decides to transfer to UM.  I would hope that if he can spend two years in Grand Rapids, stay clean, get good grades etc, the media and this blog will be a little more forgiving of the kid if he decides to try and come over to UM, or any other D1 school for that matter.

I think for the most part the blog or the media was not attacking Demar.  Wait... let me take that back.  Some clown on the radio called him a criminal.  This blog did not attack Demar, but more the process and the lack of communication between RR and the rest of the football staff.

Looking at things after it all went down it was obvious that Demar would have never passed admissions to Michigan.  He was also unable to get into Louisville or FSU.  This is why people say that he should have never been offered in the first place.  I don't know how the offering process works, so I can't really say if he should or should not have been offered in the first place.

He said that he really wanted to get out of Florida so that he could turn his life around.  Even if he never puts of a wing helmet or a Michigan jersey, trying to turn your life around is something that should be commended.  I hope that he reaches his goals whatever they might be.

If Dorsey and Conway want to transfer into the program, presuming they make the grade, are these two also included in those RR commitments considered to be honored by Hoke?   And two, does anyone know the story with Davion Rogers, and/or if he is another ?

to see Demar Dorsey qualify, and enroll, at Michigan under Brady Hoke?  What exactly would Drew Sharp have to say about that?  I know it is a long shot but please, please, please let this be true!

Oh, and one more thing -- this latest Feb, 2011 story is by the Freep's Mick McCabe.  The same Mick McCabe who ripped into Rodriguez for recruiting Dorsey in the first place.  It looks like his screed from almost exactly a year ago is no longer available at Freep.com.  Anybody know of a copy anywhere else?  That one would be a treat to re-read...

But why the hell would Dorsey want to come to Michigan? The administration and surrounding media made him out as an idiotic thug...who would want to go back to that?

That was me and I know a lot of people think this is a move to get back to UM but I just don't see it. I believe the family was very hurt by what the local media was doing with his interviews and they were not even answering the phone towards the end. I think this move is more about getting out of Florida then about getting into Michigan. It would be nice to be wrong though.

Well, the kid wasn't exactly an angel growing up.  Just go search for Demar Dorsey and the Zombie Crew.  I'm not saying what the media was right by doing what they did, but he probably wasn't ready to be a student athlete at a D1 school this past year.  It would be nice to see him succeed at GRCC and wherever he chooses after that be it Michigan or somewhere else.

The fact that Dantonio's players never have any intention to get out of trouble, while Demar wanted to get away from it and become a better person makes you sound like an asshole. He's Denard's cousin and was raised in the same town and lifestyle as Denard, are you calling him a thug too?

please tell me that your logic skills are better than what are on display here.  the bit about dantonio's players is literally 100% speculation with nothing whatsoever to back it up, and really doesn't make any sense.  the second bit on demar wanting to get away from it is also 100% speculation; and the third bit on dorsey being a cousin to denard (which somehow means calling dorsey a thug means you think denard is too(???)) is probably the dumbest thing i've heard this evening.

honestly, if you can't label dorsey thug based on the info we have; theres really no labeling anyone a thug.  i want him to pull it together as much as the next guy, and would be happy to have him were he to somehow pull it together; but rich rod absolutely should not have had anything to do with this kid based on what he was at the time of recruitment.

"nothing whatsoever to back it up" - Google is your friend.

Oct. 2008 - Glenn Winston assaults MSU hockey player A.J. Sturges. Later convicted, sentenced to 180 days in jail.

August 2009. Winston reinstated immediately upon release from jail after 4 months.

Nov. 2009. Nine MSU players charged with assault/conspiracy for attack on polticial science fraternity potluck.

Feb. 2010. Chris L. Rucker & two others plead guilty to assault.

March 2010. Rucker and three others reinstated to team for spring practice.

April 2010. Fred Smith reinstated to team upon release from jail after 4 months (where have I heard this before?)

What is speculative about this? Tolerance of this kind of behavior and pattern of Dantonio reinstating convicted violent criminals. Not speculation.

Also, Demar Dorsey said himself that he chose Michigan to get away from bad influences that were bringing him down. See TomVH's interview with Dorsey. Other articles in which Dorsey was similarly quoted are no longer available online, but here's MichiganSportsCenter with a now-dead Freep link with the same quote.

Do some checking before you say easily disprovable things like "this is 100% speculation with nothing whatsoever to back it up".

after a day away and reading replies, it's obvious that i went out a bit too far on my limb - and for those bits i apologize.  i do stand by my statements that there was some pretty lousy reasoning in the comment i was replying to.  i just felt that there was far too much dorsey-love going around and the (seemingly lone) person who was pointing out very serious character flaws was being terribly ridiculed for it.  everyone wants dorsey to turn his life around, but *out of high school*, michigan isn't/wasn't/shouldn't be the place for it.

note that the purpose of this reply was less to extend an argument, and more to show that i didn't turn tail and run after getting egg on my face.

1.  DD did not get in to Michigan, plain and simple.  The AD and RR had cleared DD according to NCAA minimum standards.  However, the Admissions Office's standards are higher than the NCAA minimums.  Add DD's history of criminality and admissions said no.  Later DD also failed to make the NCAA clearinghouse and could not get in to Louisville.  The system worked.

2.  Attacking Michigan for recruiting one academically and legally questionable player when active members of Michigan State's football team are actively engaged in ongoing thuggery is the height of hypocrisy.  Not to mention MD's habit of re-instating suspended players as quickly as possible, often on the same day they are released from jail.  DD never once wore a Michigan Wolverines uniform.  The MSU uniform has been tainted time and again by the indiscretions of its players.

3.  As I said in my earlier posts, not-so-loyalM, to condemn an 18-year-old kid from a bad neighborhood for life for bad behavior when he has shown a desire to make something of himself goes against everything Michigan and university education stand for.  If young people cannot apply themselves and work hard to make something of themselves, especially when coming from a disadvantaged background, then there is literally no point in university education in the first place.

There is one huge difference between MIchigan and MSU.  Michigan will occasionally recruit kids who screwed up as juvies and give them a chance to succeed at Michigan if the admissions office thinks they can.  If, however, they commit crimes worse than simple possession or DUI while at Michigan, they are kicked off the team.

At MSU, on the other hand, something like FIFTEEN PERCENT of their scholarship players from last season had pled guilty to violent misdemeanors.  The previous year, Saint Dantonio had Glenn Winston change almost literally from an orange jumpsuit into the Green and White.  Had he kicked him off of the team like anyone at Michigan would have, the Great Thanksgiving Weekend Frat Beatdown wouldn't have ever happened.

Things like that are not done at the University of Michigan.  Players who commit violent crimes or misdemeanors involving theft are kicked off the team.

Now that the MSM have their "Michigan Man" at the helm in Ann Arbor, they are reverting to their old stories about Michigan Men, which are usually positive.  Since the MSM get restless when they don't have anything negative to write about, I predict that Saint Dantonio will now be under increased scrutiny.

Anyway, I don't quite understand how Michigan giving someone whose sealed juvy records were illegally leaked a second chance can possibly be seen as remotely equal to Saint Dantonio enabling the criminal subculture that has not only defined the football team at MSU, but is apparently starting to infiltrate their basketball team, too.

Even to the most mathematically-challanged Sparty fan.

My high school yearbook photo would have looked just like that if I could have:

A. Found a pile of cash to bite into

B. Convinced attractive young ladies to not only take their clothes off for any reason whatsoever (fire, allergic reaction to cotton, whatever) but also stand next to me while one of my buddies snaps a pic of the whole thing

C. Somehow magically overcome my unstoppable whiteness so that the whole thing still didn't look goofy

a fun party. Are you really that clueless about what goes on in the world? Do you think colege is all that different for a lot of kids at UM -- lascivious women and all? The only difference is at M it's probably daddy's money getting flaunted...

...oh, that and the fact that THESE KIDS ARE BLACK. That's apparently the important difference.
