It's apparently official Demar Dorsey will play for GRCC. Glad he seems to be hanging in there.
I know, I know, I couldn't help myself...just had to click when I saw the headline.

I still can't help but feel sorry for the kid. I hope he has great success at GRCC and his story has a happy ending. Good luck Demar.
Did you guys really want this guy at Michigan? The fact that RR went after this kid (knowing all the trouble he was in) should tell you something about the guy. Google "Demar Dorsey zombie crew" and tell me why in the world did we ever risk recruiting someone like this...
I am guessing and hoping that he moved to Michigan to get away from this crew. Had he stayed he no doubt would have been doomed to follow this path. He is not a thug, just a kid.
No doubt that he left Florida to get into a better situation than what he was involved with. You have to give him credit, he is trying to turn his life around.
The mere fact that the kid opted to move to Michigan to play football, not at U of M after-all, but at GRCC, should prove that this kid deserves the benefit of the doubt. He surely had similar options to stay in Florida and play at that level, but he chose to get away from that environment. Good luck to you, Demar!
Agreed. I am suprised he came all the way to Michigan though. You would think he had similar offers to CC in states that are not north of the entire country.
Tony Annese is a great coach and that is what probably sold it for Demar. Wherever Tony goes, his team wins. I expect him to reach a lot higher coaching ranks in the future.
Condeming an 18-year-old kid for life because of bad decisions in the past goes against everything Michigan stands for as an institution. If you do not believe that through hard work, dedication, clean living, and staying out of trouble, a troubled young man can make something of himself and get a degree from the best school in the Big Ten, then you sir have a very limited and very selective view of what university (and community college) education can do for a person.
Also, I see you joined just today to post that. Good luck in the jungle.
Thank you for joining today for the purposes of publicly humiliating an 18-year old whom you don't know. Your MGoBlog services are now no longer required, so please go catch Ebola and leave us and Demar Dorsey's family alone.
Guarantee it's a regular poster who doesn't want his/her screen name to take a South American vacation.
Either way, they're a wuss.
Mostly because they never beat USC.
UCLA beat them from 91 to 98. I moved to California around 91 and all my friends in elementary school were either UCLA or USC fans. I remember UCLA watching Abdul-Jabar, JJ Stokes andMcNow
That was McThen.
What have they done for us McLately?
It has just increased the amount of bandwagon USC fans. Living in Hermosa you must be pretty familiar with that situation.
Surrounded by Trojans in the South Bay, with a smattering of Bruins.
I really loathe USC.
This photo would give you the impression that the "thug life" is not entirely without advantages......interesting....
This guy is definitely living it.....
Please take note of the horseshoe shaped stadium in the picture to his right. I didn't not any sarcasm in your post (no neg bang FWIW), but in case you didn't notice, this appears to be an osu fan mocking our former coach.
Dude, that's Mr. Plow himself, Benedict Boren.
Yeah.... that's Justin Boren.
I'm Earth, have we met?
Need I say more?
No, you don't need to say anymore. I think it was covered. Apparently, I'm not able to spot traiterous scum. /s
That's sarcasm, people. I hope I have my sarcasm designator right.
Wow, someone flicked off the camera? Oh no. We shouldn't let anyone in to Michigan who does that...
And the second picture isn't even him, why even post it?
I don't get the big deal about the 4th picture either. So he's biting cash.... uhhh ok?
The worst thing I see going on is underage drinking. Not to belittle that, but.... it's not just potential football players who do this at UM or other schools. I'm sure YOU neeeeeever did that either.
The only picture that I would have an issue with is the second one, and I'm not even positive that's Demar.
Either way, go fuck yourself.
It isn't him.
Dude - seriously tell me that you didn't do stupid stuff in high school. My friends and I used to wear pendants that said "69" on them. Let's face it, people do stupid stuff at that age. Do you know the human brain isn't fully developed until age 25? Why shouldn't he have the chance in AA in a better environment? Regardless of where he ends up give it a rest.
Actually, they are saying it's closer to 30 now, but that makes your point even more valid.
All I see are your standard pictures from a SEC Junior Day.
You are the worst! I did some pretty horrible shit throughout my highschool days and I was able to mature and realize how stupid some of the shit I did was. I'd like to think I turned out more than okay. I believe Demar is very capable of doing the same, i'm glad he's getting out of Florida, hopefully this gets him on the right path. I'm have faith in you Demar and i'm rooting for you!
So loyalm, kindly eat a bag of dicks!
Me and my friends took pictures almost exactly like those (and did the things they are insinuating they do) when we were in HS and I'm a about to graduate from the university of Tampa with a 3.5 GPA. Not saying I'm a genius nor an athlete the caliber of DD, but kids act stupid in HS and everyone deserves a second chance. To judge a kids potential based solely on some pictures and a few juvenile mistakes isn't really fair IMO, but that's just me. To each his own I guess.
I would have loved to see UM at least give him a chance.
Hopefully, GRCC is the first step in turning it around for Dorsey. It shows character to have the awareness to willingly extract yourself from a bad situation, which is what he has apparently done. I wish him luck.
Vance Bedford vouched for the kid for one thing. Do you honestly believe that Michigan never recruited kids like this before RR? Just that with today's media and available technology everything is recorded instantly. Remember a kid named Kelly Baraka? Maybe you remember a player stalking girls and exposing himself on front porches or a player shooting his gun in the air on campus because he thought his vehicle was being broken into? I know RR wasn't one of us, but neither were the two greatest coaches to ever coach Michigan football, Bo and Fielding.
I really hope this kid starts working hard and getting his life in order, for his sake.
Is GRCC one of the farm community colleges for Michigan? I recall RR spent time recruiting there, or something like that.
I think so, Shawn Conway enrolled there with hopes of transferring to UM. The Return of the No Fly Zone would be SICK!!!
Shawn Conway ended up going to Arizona Western, but GRCC credits do transfer to UM.
Conway is going to some CC in Arizona
Without having him enrolled I would feel dirty wearing that hat.
Answered better than me, nothing to see here.
Other than a certain special someone.
That made me laugh out loud.
She's more impressed with the Bugatti I got her. The Dom Perignon probably had an affect too.
Best of luck to him and maybe down the road we will see a young man who has turned his life around and simply went to GRCC to eventually transfer to the school he really wanted to be at--U of M.
Not necessarily the athletic department -- maybe someone in academic counseling who is (or was) advising him and his family. I mean, Demar's case was unusual (one of three similar cases along with Witty and Jones) -- he signed a NLI and at the time it sounded (from statements Demar made) that someone was working with him to try and help him qualify and clear Admissions -- it didn't work out, but it's not hard to imagine them proposing the GRCC route in the aftermath. Fast forward to this winter, after things don't work out elsewhere, and Demar decides to go ahead and try GRCC.
The fact is, this is one of the only community colleges where, if one's grades are good -- and I mean really good, not just the minimums -- it is possible to transfer to Ann Arbor. Hoke talks all about redemption and "touching" the lives of players -- if Demar can hold up his end of the bargain, this could be a chance for Hoke to prove that it is not just empty talk.
I really hope that Demar gets his stuff together, earns his AA degree and decides to transfer to UM. I would hope that if he can spend two years in Grand Rapids, stay clean, get good grades etc, the media and this blog will be a little more forgiving of the kid if he decides to try and come over to UM, or any other D1 school for that matter.
I think for the most part the blog or the media was not attacking Demar. Wait... let me take that back. Some clown on the radio called him a criminal. This blog did not attack Demar, but more the process and the lack of communication between RR and the rest of the football staff.
Looking at things after it all went down it was obvious that Demar would have never passed admissions to Michigan. He was also unable to get into Louisville or FSU. This is why people say that he should have never been offered in the first place. I don't know how the offering process works, so I can't really say if he should or should not have been offered in the first place.
He said that he really wanted to get out of Florida so that he could turn his life around. Even if he never puts of a wing helmet or a Michigan jersey, trying to turn your life around is something that should be commended. I hope that he reaches his goals whatever they might be.
would love to see him find his way to umich
Nice to hear that he ended up somewhere. Good luck to him!
If Dorsey and Conway want to transfer into the program, presuming they make the grade, are these two also included in those RR commitments considered to be honored by Hoke? And two, does anyone know the story with Davion Rogers, and/or if he is another ?
OH Let Do it!!??
to see Demar Dorsey qualify, and enroll, at Michigan under Brady Hoke? What exactly would Drew Sharp have to say about that? I know it is a long shot but please, please, please let this be true!
Oh, and one more thing -- this latest Feb, 2011 story is by the Freep's Mick McCabe. The same Mick McCabe who ripped into Rodriguez for recruiting Dorsey in the first place. It looks like his screed from almost exactly a year ago is no longer available at Freep.com. Anybody know of a copy anywhere else? That one would be a treat to re-read...
This - featuring an excellent post by my good friend, dahblue:
I have a feeling this thread will go nuclear in T-minus 10 minutes.
But why the hell would Dorsey want to come to Michigan? The administration and surrounding media made him out as an idiotic thug...who would want to go back to that?
To prove the goddamn haters wrong. THAT IS WHY.
I know you're just kidding, but if he wanted to prove the haters wrong, he'd enroll at MSU and become an All-American
Not sure he could get into MSU.
There's a first for everything
If DD gets his act together and makes the grades, I don't see why he can't transfer to Michigan. Remember Denard telling DD about "all the love you're getting up here?" Plenty of people would love to see an academically and legally sound DD in a Michigan uniform, myself included.
some folks have an intense desire to prove haters wrong. maybe he's one of those?
DG you gotta wonder why GRCC? Is it because its one of the better CC football programs in the mid west? Or because he would have a small shot at UM(credits thing)? Just gotta wonder what his end goals are football wise and his motives for GRCC.
That's definitely a fair point. I just don't understand why he'd still want to come.
Perhaps he wasn't aware of what the Free Press said, since no one reads it.
It looked bad for us for a while. But him not enrolling at Louisville probably means he didn't make the Clearinghouse. If so, Michigan shouldn't look bad.
This is MICHIGAN.
That was me and I know a lot of people think this is a move to get back to UM but I just don't see it. I believe the family was very hurt by what the local media was doing with his interviews and they were not even answering the phone towards the end. I think this move is more about getting out of Florida then about getting into Michigan. It would be nice to be wrong though.
Yeah, I sure as hell wouldn't go to Michigan if I were him. Maybe I'd try to go to MSU or OSU. Nebraska also has a relatively significant JUCO presense.
wait ... what is this "presense" thing anyway? Nebraska leads the B1G in JUCOs followed not too closely by Minnesota's presence.
Well, the kid wasn't exactly an angel growing up. Just go search for Demar Dorsey and the Zombie Crew. I'm not saying what the media was right by doing what they did, but he probably wasn't ready to be a student athlete at a D1 school this past year. It would be nice to see him succeed at GRCC and wherever he chooses after that be it Michigan or somewhere else.
Made him out to be "an idiotic thug" LOL
I bet this kid you call a thug accomplishes more than you have or maybe ever will. LOL/fucking serious/
You are a transparent Spartan troll. Pride somethingsomething Fall.
Oh, the hypocricy... you guys slam Dantonio for players getting in a fight and yet you have no problem with recruiting this thug.
The fact that Dantonio's players never have any intention to get out of trouble, while Demar wanted to get away from it and become a better person makes you sound like an asshole. He's Denard's cousin and was raised in the same town and lifestyle as Denard, are you calling him a thug too?
please tell me that your logic skills are better than what are on display here. the bit about dantonio's players is literally 100% speculation with nothing whatsoever to back it up, and really doesn't make any sense. the second bit on demar wanting to get away from it is also 100% speculation; and the third bit on dorsey being a cousin to denard (which somehow means calling dorsey a thug means you think denard is too(???)) is probably the dumbest thing i've heard this evening.
honestly, if you can't label dorsey thug based on the info we have; theres really no labeling anyone a thug. i want him to pull it together as much as the next guy, and would be happy to have him were he to somehow pull it together; but rich rod absolutely should not have had anything to do with this kid based on what he was at the time of recruitment.
said a major reason of choosing Michigan was he wanted to get out of michigan for better influences, specifically away from florida. try again.
Please tell me that your grammar skills are better than what are on display here.
"nothing whatsoever to back it up" - Google is your friend.
Oct. 2008 - Glenn Winston assaults MSU hockey player A.J. Sturges. Later convicted, sentenced to 180 days in jail.
August 2009. Winston reinstated immediately upon release from jail after 4 months.
Nov. 2009. Nine MSU players charged with assault/conspiracy for attack on polticial science fraternity potluck.
Feb. 2010. Chris L. Rucker & two others plead guilty to assault.
March 2010. Rucker and three others reinstated to team for spring practice.
April 2010. Fred Smith reinstated to team upon release from jail after 4 months (where have I heard this before?)
What is speculative about this? Tolerance of this kind of behavior and pattern of Dantonio reinstating convicted violent criminals. Not speculation.
Also, Demar Dorsey said himself that he chose Michigan to get away from bad influences that were bringing him down. See TomVH's interview with Dorsey. Other articles in which Dorsey was similarly quoted are no longer available online, but here's MichiganSportsCenter with a now-dead Freep link with the same quote.
Do some checking before you say easily disprovable things like "this is 100% speculation with nothing whatsoever to back it up".
after a day away and reading replies, it's obvious that i went out a bit too far on my limb - and for those bits i apologize. i do stand by my statements that there was some pretty lousy reasoning in the comment i was replying to. i just felt that there was far too much dorsey-love going around and the (seemingly lone) person who was pointing out very serious character flaws was being terribly ridiculed for it. everyone wants dorsey to turn his life around, but *out of high school*, michigan isn't/wasn't/shouldn't be the place for it.
note that the purpose of this reply was less to extend an argument, and more to show that i didn't turn tail and run after getting egg on my face.
1. DD did not get in to Michigan, plain and simple. The AD and RR had cleared DD according to NCAA minimum standards. However, the Admissions Office's standards are higher than the NCAA minimums. Add DD's history of criminality and admissions said no. Later DD also failed to make the NCAA clearinghouse and could not get in to Louisville. The system worked.
2. Attacking Michigan for recruiting one academically and legally questionable player when active members of Michigan State's football team are actively engaged in ongoing thuggery is the height of hypocrisy. Not to mention MD's habit of re-instating suspended players as quickly as possible, often on the same day they are released from jail. DD never once wore a Michigan Wolverines uniform. The MSU uniform has been tainted time and again by the indiscretions of its players.
3. As I said in my earlier posts, not-so-loyalM, to condemn an 18-year-old kid from a bad neighborhood for life for bad behavior when he has shown a desire to make something of himself goes against everything Michigan and university education stand for. If young people cannot apply themselves and work hard to make something of themselves, especially when coming from a disadvantaged background, then there is literally no point in university education in the first place.
To all points, but especially #3, amen.
There is one huge difference between MIchigan and MSU. Michigan will occasionally recruit kids who screwed up as juvies and give them a chance to succeed at Michigan if the admissions office thinks they can. If, however, they commit crimes worse than simple possession or DUI while at Michigan, they are kicked off the team.
At MSU, on the other hand, something like FIFTEEN PERCENT of their scholarship players from last season had pled guilty to violent misdemeanors. The previous year, Saint Dantonio had Glenn Winston change almost literally from an orange jumpsuit into the Green and White. Had he kicked him off of the team like anyone at Michigan would have, the Great Thanksgiving Weekend Frat Beatdown wouldn't have ever happened.
Things like that are not done at the University of Michigan. Players who commit violent crimes or misdemeanors involving theft are kicked off the team.
Now that the MSM have their "Michigan Man" at the helm in Ann Arbor, they are reverting to their old stories about Michigan Men, which are usually positive. Since the MSM get restless when they don't have anything negative to write about, I predict that Saint Dantonio will now be under increased scrutiny.
Anyway, I don't quite understand how Michigan giving someone whose sealed juvy records were illegally leaked a second chance can possibly be seen as remotely equal to Saint Dantonio enabling the criminal subculture that has not only defined the football team at MSU, but is apparently starting to infiltrate their basketball team, too.
Even to the most mathematically-challanged Sparty fan.
Gasp! Women without clothes. Nobody other than a thug would want that.
My high school yearbook photo would have looked just like that if I could have:
A. Found a pile of cash to bite into
B. Convinced attractive young ladies to not only take their clothes off for any reason whatsoever (fire, allergic reaction to cotton, whatever) but also stand next to me while one of my buddies snaps a pic of the whole thing
C. Somehow magically overcome my unstoppable whiteness so that the whole thing still didn't look goofy
You probably would have looked like one of the Beastie Boys. With gold teeth.
You joined to post this? You're either jealous or a troll.
a fun party. Are you really that clueless about what goes on in the world? Do you think colege is all that different for a lot of kids at UM -- lascivious women and all? The only difference is at M it's probably daddy's money getting flaunted...
...oh, that and the fact that THESE KIDS ARE BLACK. That's apparently the important difference.
Is not for "M"ichigan but for the loyal "M"oron crew. Well when ever the point system gets back online he can join the troll crew.
How does "recognizing that he did not have the academic qualifications for admission" = "made him look like an idiotic thug"?
The school's administration has a fucking university to run, which is bigger than the football team, let alone one talented recruit. Blame the media all you like - they deserve it - but UM made the correct decision in denying Dorsey's admission.
EDIT: Oops. Didn't bother to check whether the same response had been made.
I might have to go check out the Radiers play.
I would welcome him 100%, but I'd probly shit my pants.
It would seem the fact that he's enrolling in a CC in Michigan with transferrable credits (or so I've read) to Ann Arbor indicates a continued interest in playing for U-M? Although, I seem to remember Michigan's foray into the JC world to be quite limited and quite unremarkable. Anyone correct that statement if it's inaccurate.
That is very accurate but I think he would be someone who would be a possible exception mainly because he signed a LOI here last year and he also has more talent than your average JUCO player it was only his some bad decisions that kept him out of here.
I would love to see him turn his life around and prove everyone wrong. I felt he was unjustly portrayed in the media people need to remember that these are just kids sometimes. Hope him the best and would be more than happy to see him in a michigan jersey someday with his life turned around if thats what he wants. Good luck Demar!
I hope he turns it around, too. I'll be rooting for him.
But jeez. He was "unjustly portrayed" by the media? The kid had two or three burglary arrests, including one with a weapon. And there was something very fishy about his sudden improvement in grades. The kid, as of last year, had no business getting into Michigan.
If he gets his act together, maybe that can change. But don't go making excuses for the kid. This isn't Columbus.
But not... oh, never mind.
Maybe you need it spelled out. Maybe one day, after he's proven himself in school, and after he has stayed out of trouble for more than two years, he'll get a chance to play at Michigan.
When M recruited him, he was less than two years removed from criminality. And his grades were terrible. In a couple years, maybe he will mature. That's how the system is meant to work. It has nothing to do with Brady Hoke.
Do you really need this explained to you?
Mick McCabe and Drew Sharp. They weren't much concerned with Dorsey's future; they wanted to go off on Rich Rodriguez.
"...Less than two years removed from criminality..."
You realize a lot can happen in two years, especially from the ages of 16-18, right? He went from not being able to drive to being able to see boobies legally, being able to buy cigarettes, and voting in elections. Two years might not meet your minimum requirements for a Michigan student but, considering he grew up in a shitty neighborhood and cited a reason to come to Michigan was to get out of said shitty neighborhood, I would say he has already come a long fucking way.
Bless that kid.
Am I missing something? The only thing he is glorifying in this picture is money and a horrible taste in shoes....and everyone in the world glorifies money so all he is guilty of is apparently saying "fuck you" to anyone who dislikes bright red shoes. If admissions saw a picture of a kid giving the bird with money in his hand and it had anything to do with him not getting into Michigan, I will be very disappointed in my alma mater.
Admissions generally doesn't have time to go scoping out online profiles of applicants. Probably lucky for some prospective students (plenty if them non-athletes), who tweet and post all kinds of material that doesn't speak well of their maturity or developing values.
If Dorsey had completed his UM application, Admissions would have used usual channels to evaluate him--grades, test scores, letters of Rec & input of adults in his life, maybe an interview, etc. Not photos they found somewhere.
Best of luck to DD and kudos to the MGoBlogger who sniffed this out back in December.
The article that you linked said that NACAC found 1 in 4 schools do this. How is that "most?"
And more to the point, we're not talking about other schools, we are talking about U-M. I'll ask my colleagues in OUA but I'll be surprised if they consider photographs found on the internet a more reliable indicator than the other means they use to judge the acceptability of its 38,000 applications--or even just the athletes.
Is it necessary for you to further circulate this picture? Whatever your opinion on the matter that doesn't seem constructive for anyone.
Demar, we're all still waiting for you to wear the maize and blue.
Honesty I think he's trying to ultimately get in to UM. Denard is coaching him up I have a feeling.
Denard is The One.
Do work Demar. The toughest path is the most rewarding. You need Michigan, we need you.
And as always....M CLUB SUPPORTS YOU!!!
NO FLY ZONE. DO WORK.
his hometown environment, that's wonderful for him. If he is able to get the grades and credits that enable him to transfer to UM, that would be a great accomplishment, but since we've taken such a microscopically small number of transfers over the last few decades, I wouldn't hold my breath. While I agree that photos taken during adolescence do not mean that maturation is impossible, it would be interesting to find out what Brady Hoke's view of a kid's past and background is. His general statements about what kind of kids he wants could lead you to conclude that he wouldn't be interested in DD, but in other interviews BH has directly referred to his own wild days in college, and the fact that he had to mature himself.
Well, there was his homily during the introductory press conference about how he was a criminal justice major and only got started in coaching because it was a way to help kids.
If Demar can do the academic work at GRCC, I think there's a good chance Officer Hoke would be willing to offer him a scholarship.
there is a good chance that Denard has gotten this kid in front of Greg Harden. If he hasn't, he probably should.
I wish this kid luck and hope that he can make good things happen for himself.
Can you believe it, a 17 year old smoked some pot, well I guess the book is closed on him any person who ever did any thing as heinous as that has no place in society. We are waaaaay to refined to allow that type access to hallowed grounds. Oh wait a minute I guess we did have a self proclaimed user as President. Though I am glad we do have some self-righteous pricks posting to keep us in line.
with the burglary and robbery with a deadly weapon as well? Just kids being kids, right?
Just for the record, as Mr. Cook reported here months ago, Demar Dorsey had contact with the Broward County criminal justice system over two felonies; in one case, the charges were dropped, and in the other case he was acquitted.
Regardless, I still think that offering a scholarship to Dorsey was ill-advised for a coach in RR's shoes at the time. Given Dorsey's background, even if he was never convicted of any felony, it was absolutely inevitable that there was going to be a media shitstorm over the scholarship offer, and that was the last thing that RR needed after two of the most disappointing seasons in the last 4 decades of Michigan football. The fact that there wasn't a good enough job in assessing DD's academic qualifications prior to the offer just made things worse. It would have been far more prudent for the staff to either offer a 3-star without the baggage, or bank the scholarship.
that is nice to hear.Him and SHOELACE are related,so maybe thats why he chose Grand Rapids CC.Maybe just maybe he transfers here a year from now.GO BLUE!!!
