Demar Dorsey to Walk on at FSU?

Submitted by Beavis on

So apparently warchant is blowing up over the potential to have Demar Dorsey walk-on the team next year.  I have just heard this from a friend who has access to the site (I don't have access).

Just a quick "Demar dorsey walk on FSU" google search and the scout board has a thread on it as well.

I know he's not coming to Michigan, ever.  But how would you guys feel if he was at another major program and contributing next year?  I wish the kid luck, but I feel like the "woe is the state of Michigan athletics" would gain another bullet point.

you know how I feel after seeing at least three threads on a kid, who like millions in this country, is down on their luck and is no longer affliated with Michigan. Good luck to the kid, but to keep bringing him up is like holding onto hope that running through the woods with honey smothered steaks will prevent you from being mauled by a bear. He isn't coming.

But unless he's been doing some crazy academic work behind the scenes - and I sincerely hope he has been - I've got to raise an eye at any institution that admits him (and I can't fathom how he'd get into the school any easier as a walk-on versus as a scholarship player; if anything, it seems harder that way).

Good luck, Demar.

Seriously, a neighbor / friend of the family is an FSU grad who is all tomahawk choppin' 'n gator-hatin' 'n all that stuff... she has kids now, and she swears she would never, ever let her kids apply to FSU because its a totally lousy school.

If a school makes its Seminole-loving grads say that out loud, well, that speaks volumes.

But he prolly could qualify for "tUOS," if prior admissions are any indication.

Not sure that's right.  It didn't start as a girl's school but rather a men's school which absorbed a female seminary when it went co-ed.

That said,  I'm bemused by the implication that all-female institutions are/were inherently crappy. Time for a history lesson, folks!  Back then, some single-sex education was indeed based on a belief that women didn't have the minds (or, as was often claimed, the 'constitutions') to handle the kind of studies that men were undertaking.  Even at the time, some people saw that as ignorant, and proved that at co-ed and women's colleges all over the country.

The institution that was to become Florida State decided girls were good enough to attend in 1858.  12 years before U-M.   But hey, 150 years later the joke is still a laff riot!

You would consider FSU even more lucky if you knew they had a 4-star WR coming in as a walk-on.  The kid played in the Dodgers organization for three years (I think) and is now going to play college ball.

And oh yeah - the Dodgers have to contractually pay his tuition.

Merely being a "walk-on" doesn't magically improve your test scores or your transcript. If FSU's academic standards are so pliable, why not just offer him a full scholarship?

I would say it is likely so that they don't have to use a schollie on him. At this point it is clear that Dorsey doesn't have a leg to stand on and his options are very limited. This is his shot to play big time college football so my guess is the coach told him you are welcome to come play as a walk-on and try to earn a scholarship, but we aren't going to use one just so you can come on the team and flunk out after the first semester.

I have absolutely no idea if this is what is happening, but it is plausible hypothesis. If I were a coach, I wouldn't be too excited about using a scholarship on a kid that would likely be academically ineligible once grades came out.

That said, I really hope he succeed's. I wish it could have been here, but hope whatever happens, DD makes something of himself.

I would love nothing more than to see this man land on his feet and succeed.  He went through a lot last year, and I don't care where he goes, but I'll cheer him on.

I hope he does well at FSU if this is true, just not good enough if they play Michigan.

I can't believe anyone here is trying to make the case that FSU is a bastion of higher learning. That's a joke. FSU is clown-factory. A couple years ago, investigators discovered that some FSU players were functionally illiterate.

The Rhodes Scholar thing? Also a joke. There are a handful of mediocre state schools that basically function as Rhodie-mills. One is FSU. Another is...MSU. They throw all their resources into creating a handful of Rhodes Scholars. It's a PR stunt.

I'm sure the school isn't all bad. But it's not ranked among the top 50 public schools. And its academic standards for athletes are notoriously low. FSU often accepts players nobody else would touch. See: Dorsey, Demar.

I hope he goes to Florida State and balls out, does that dance where he was dragging his leg around right outside the huddle. So smooth....oh man I wish he was wearin that number 7 at free safety in a winged helmet. Just want to see this dude play football. Boyz in da pahokee is a G. I'm out. Oh I love coach Rod too...those are just my thoughts, right or wrong, just what I'm feelin at this time. Steve Everitt. Love him too....here's to you 51. Blue...

I would be very happy for him. He's been through a lot so it would be good for him to get back on to the field and be able to play.

As much as I wanted him at Michigan, I'd still be a fan and love to see him play at FSU. Good Luck To DD  and hope it all works out.
