Demar Dorsey Update

Found this link on Allen Trieu's Twitter. Seems like Dorsey is going to be transferring to a D-1 FBS school. I know Michigan doesn't do the JUCO thing often (or at all?), but this would be a pretty good story (and a pretty athletic player). The kid was like collateral damage in the media's villification of Rich Rodriguez. He didn't qualify, had some trouble, etc. Two years later, cleans up his act takes the road less traveled and joins his cousin Denard Robinson at Michigan. That has ESPN College Gameday feature written all over it.
I know it's not likely, but what does everyone else think?

putting his past behind him and moving on. Further, he did it in the face of national attention, criticism and what amounted to out and out attacks by the media, and he still pulled it off. Who has heard his name other than via a football discussion? Why would we want anyone like that at Michigan?

Kovacs' story is way better than Rudy. It's not even fair to compare, our Michigan bias aside. I hate to play the race and ethnic background card, but it's appropriate here. If Kovacs had been accused of three felonies by the age of 16 and been denied admission everywhere... maybe we could simplify this to the race card. However, Kovacs was accepted into Michigan, one of the best schools in the country. It's not the same

Comparing Kovacs to Rudy is an insult to Kovacs. He's actually a good player. Rudy was a scrub who played two snaps of garbage time.

This has zero chance of happening. The last JUCO kid we took (Austin Panter) wasnt an academic risk; he had played 7-on-7 high school ball in a rural Iowa town way out in the middle of nowhere. He went to a JUCO because he wanted to get more exposure, not because his grades sucked. I think Russel Shaw (the last JUCO we took before Panter) might have been in a similar situation.
Sorry, but Michigan would never take a kid with Dorsey's academic background. It might make for a nice story, but it's not happening.

This would definitely be a beautiful thing. Loved Dorsey and was more excited about him than any other recruit. Im glad he is turning it all around.

I am sure Hoke and staff have been monitoring him. And I am sure there was a discussion with RR on what it might take to get into Michigan, likely the same with Hoke.
If it could happen, these discussions have already happened, otherwise it has no shot.

It'd be a nice little story, but honestly, I'm not sure why we'd want to take a DB with only two years of eligibility. We've shored up the secondary. It's no longer a horribly glaring need.
If we can get JUCOs past admissions, we really should look for a defensive tackle.

Is this his first year at the JUCO? I was thinking it was his second. You could make more of a case for bringing him in if he has three years left, but even then I don't know. I don't see a huge need to bring in another guy who would be in Countess's class.

He plays safety, though. Countess plays corner. I think Dorsey is more talented than any other DB we have. But, I don't know if he's worth the risk. We are getting Wilson, and we may get Wright too. I guess it all depends on whether or not the coaches are happy with the talent level. All of this is supposing that Dorsey is academically viable as well. But dammit, he sure is an exciting player.

We just added Jeremy Clark to the 2012 class instead of Grey shirting and signing with the 2013. I would love for DD to play for us! But it's just not gonna happen... Weaksauce

So a year ago I did some research about why we don't take many JUCO's. I have several friends that transfered to UM from community colleges so I was curious why everyone was saying it was so hard to be done. So between my friends and Michigan's website (which talks about how to transfer from a community college) I figured out that you have to specifically prep to get into Michigan as a JUCO. You can't just get a good GPA and take a Gen Ed track and think they will accept you. So if Dorsey is taking the coursework that would align with Michigan or that calibur of school he could get in here. Since a lot of JUCO kids went there for grades and are doing all they can to qualify for your average BCS school, they aren't real candidates to transfer to Michigan.
So if say a lifelong UM fan was recruited but had a bad ACT they could go to JUCO and prep for 2 years to specifically attend Michigan. It's odd that we have the same admission standards for football out of high school that State has but not for JUCO's, but that's the way it is for some reason.

take Gen Ed courses and get a good GPA and they will take you. The problem is that even after a year you would still be considered a freshman(meaning you could earn 30 credits at CC, but M would only count 12 of those credits, hypothetically). Which is a problem for athletes, as I believe there are a certain number of credits you have to have at the school you are playing for, with respect to your eligibility. If you are a sophomore eligibility wise, than you must be considered a sophomore academically.

as a sophomore at least. If you take spring and summer classes for two or three summer you can easily graduate in four years. Seeing as some football players graduate after FIVE years I don't see this as a problem. Also depending on the classes you took at JUCO and what your major is at Michigan you may be able to transfer the majority of your credits.
Also, you can't just take anything you want and get in. Here's what UM says about tranferring.

I don't have to go through that link, I've gone through the process. You are positing that you have to take classes with the sole purpose of them transferring to Michigan. This is not true. There are classes that you must take, classes you should take, and then there are classes that you will take that won't transfer.

that we stay away from jucos just for the reason it takes a spot of the 85 limit and a scholly for that year, and you only get 2 years of service from them? Harder to mold a guy in 2 years instead of 4 or 5 years a normal recruit would have? Last one I remember was Austin Painter ( LB I think that was his name) and that never really panned out mostly cause Lloyd brought him in and he palyed for RR which is never easy.

We don't do the JUCO thing because other schools' credits don't transfer well to Michigan credits. Michigan's transfer system, at least in my day (and I doubt it has changed) asks you to find the closest course in the Michigan course catalogue or else you get general credits.
This is terribly stupid because taking classes that are not offered at Michigan is the main reason you would want to take classes elsewhere. I took two history classes with the regular students at La Sorbonne (the Michigan of France) and those became 4 "general" credits.
Michigan State has a much more rational policy, and because of it a much better study abroad program, and they can get Rent-a-Plaxicos to join their football team.

all of my AP credits (12 with 3 classes, History, European History, and something else that I don't recall anymore) transferred as non-general but specific subjects.
I wonder why they are cool with AP, but not transfer credits? Also, I knew of 3-4 people who transferred into the BBA program (when it was 2 years and ranked #1), so it really is possible.

If there is any way that Hoke and Brandon can let Dorsey come to Michigan they need to get him to Ann Arbor. It would definatley be an amazeing story. He could come in and compete for a starting spot immediatley.

Half the players don't graduate anyway. Most of them stop going to class after the fall semester so who gives a shit how many credits DD would have coming in to UM. Bama and the SEC schools do this all the time. How do you think Bama reloads? Sure they have a top 5 class every year but they get one or two JUCOs to fill positions of need until younger recruits can step up.
