Demar Dorsey Rivals Article?

Submitted by FingerMustache on

Saw the following on the Rivals Page:

"Michigan class of 2010 pledge Demar Dorsey will not be enrolling at U-M … but where will he end up? Probably not at one of the schools being rumored. Plus, head coach John Beilein comments on assistant Mike Jackson's departure …"

Normally I wouldnt ask for insiders info, but being that this is a topic that we've all been very much interested in, does someone with an account want to give a bit more info

Check out the thread from earlier today-- the "Demar Dorsey ESPN article" thread, and I believe there may have been another one or two today as well. I know there were links to Sam Webb on this issue, and excerpts from the Rivals article. Also, this thread from earlier today has a lot of useful info in it: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/dave-birkett-dorsey-qualified-wgrades-florida-state-possible

I don't think the Rivals article has anything new/that those other sources don't have, fwiw.

In short, the Rivals guys continue assert that DD has no shot at enrolling.

Their confidence that he's a done deal to not get in is strange.  They must have talked to someone in admissions or someone in the AD close to the process of getting him in, because I don't see how a kid who is apparently qualified through the clearinghouse has no shot at being admitted.  After all the shit we went through after his commitment, it's so fucking frustrating to apparently refuse to admit the kid for troubles in his past.  Academics cannot be the problem here.

The article claims that it's not the administration, and that FSU has told Dorsey that they will pass on him. Which suggests there's something more to the story.

I want this kid here because he is an amazing athlete, thus I really want to give this kid a chance to succeed despite past transgressions. But if he is a crapbag, he can go elsewhere. Yes, he made some mistakes and was caught twice. He could end up being the greatest DB of all time, but if there are red flags that stretch beyond him being CAUGHT twice, we should pass. I stress the word caught because I imagine this is what is holding up his admission.

Neg the shit out of me, but I don't want to sell out our proud school after it's been through the wringer the last 18 months. If there were no penalties looming, no NCAA probe, no violations, no Justin Feagin, well I think we could take a flyer on him.

This kid will help the program, but he will not make the program. The risks of bringing in this kid outweigh the benefits, especially if there are other concerns besides his run-ins with the police. If he goes south, it's another embarrassment on our program.

All this being said, I hope (against hope) that there isn't a problem, that DD has seen the light, and because of that, he is blue this fall.

... how could any university do that and not run afoul of privacy laws?

I think there are two things going on:

1. New information, post-signing, has come to light.

2. David Brandon, aka "The New Sheriff in Town," took a look and said no.

Neither really good for RR, especially if the information in #1 could have been uncovered with better due diligence.

was consulted before accepting a letter of intent.  He took his look in January and it was yes.

They even interviewed an old U guy in Florida for character reference.  RR received the blessing from all parties that needed to be involved to get this kid enrolled............yes that includes admissions.

I would love to have Dorsey as a game changer, but I've got to believe something huge has come up recently. We've got to believe RR would fight for his life to get this kid enrolled as it could be the difference for him. If he really is that questionable at this point it may be best to part ways unfortunately.

Considering it is all but confirmed that he has passed Clearinghouse, and "If" the FSU rumor is true (that they too will pass on DD) then that would suggest that there has been an issue post-signing that both UM and FSU are focusing on... considering both were more than willing to have his services in February.

Hopefully, this is just another journalistic botch-job that is scrambling to make a Soap Opera out of an 18-yearl-old kid's life and the truth is that UM is in the process of cutting through red tape to admit him:  Grades are good (enough); no new issues, no FSU lingering to steal him (as he's stil under a signed LOI).... UM just can't snap their fingers and accept him within 12 hours of getting cleared due to admission rules and process.  That's the reason... right?  RIGHT?

Rittenberg's article and the interview with Dorsey's high school coach suggest that Rivals doesn't know what they're talking about when they say that Dorsey absolutely isn't coming to Michigan.  Both the coach and Rittenberg (with an apparent second source) say that the coaching staff is still trying to get him in.  I can't believe that Rivals has a better understanding of Dorsey's chances than does the coaching staff.

I will have a cup of diarrhea drink to wash down the constant stream of shitty UM football news I have to swallow ......DD was the gem of the class, but of course, Michigan football hating God felt the need to crap on us again.

Now I need to get someone to explain everything to me.. its early and my brain is on autohangover.

As far as I can tell;

he has passed the NCAA clearing house with a 2.5 GPA and a 18 ACT

As far as I can tell, his final grades wont be submitted until friday, with final grades not coming out until june.

So, maybe the holdup is that UM doesnt want to admit him without an official transcript (which would require waiting until the end of june) to dissuade the notion that there was any possiblity that they bent some rules to get him in.

PLEASE

I am hoping for the best after this guy on scout.com open forums posted this:

The word around the campfire is that admissions is looking at getting a ton of flack if they don't admit this kid after he qualified and was extended a scholarship.   I was told that many of booster have been putting the full court press to get this kid in.  There is still some hope.

Take if for what it's worth.

When asked about his source, he states:

Someone who pushes papers at the Athletic Dept. on the corner of State and Hoover.  Nobody high up, but I trust his intel.

clearly, they'll get it from football fans who understand how important dorsey could be on the field over the next few years. beyond that, though, i kind of feel like we owe the kid. put yourself in his shoes. after being offered a scholarship, he sees a wave of stories in major newspapers basically calling him a thug who's unworthy of attending the university of michigan (even without any convictions to his name). after that, his GPA and ACT scores are publicly released and clearly fall well below what's typically acceptable for U-M students. then you top all of that off with telling him that we actually don't want him around, we just hadn't really thought about it yet? i think we owe the kid a shot.

After the whole signing day hit job, Dorsey became my favorite recruit of this class. It will be a damn shame if he doesn't get in, but either way, I will root for him.

There's lots of rumor, innuendo, guesses, informed speculation, secret anonymous inside sources in the A.D., etc. etc., but no real facts that anybody can prove and source. UM can't say anything about grades due to privacy issues, and the same presumably goes for DD's high school. I would bet it's frustrating to RR and Brandon to hear all the angry speculation and not be able to respond or comment.

However, jblaze dug up something factual on an earlier thread, and that's the Broward County school schedule. It states that final grades don't come out until June 25th. Until those grades are official, how does the UM admissions office absolutely know with 100% certainty that DD has the requisite grades? They can't rely on what a coach is stating informally, even if the coach knows through his internal contacts at Boyd Anderson that DD has done well enough. MaizedandConfused's point about Admissions needing to wait until final grades are in seems to me to be a logical explanation, especially if DD's overall GPA was low enough that his final report card was a critical, make-or-break thing.

jblaze also pointed out in his initial post that as of National SIgning day on Feb. 3, DD had only one senior year report card; the second wasn't issued until the next day. There was one in April, and the final grades come in late June. That means 75% of his senior year grades were undetermined as of the day he signed his LOI. If Admissions can admit him before his final grades are in, somebody needs to explain to me how that works for a student whose GPA is close to the minimum for admission.

This doesn't mean that it's impossible that so-called character issues have arisen since he received his LOI, but in the absence of hard information about that, I think that it makes more sense to consider the question of the Broward County grading schedule as a reason for the "delay."

Unfortunately rational thought and using facts in a responsible manner take too long for the readership of the internet.

Even the news sources are updating their pages daily or maybe hourly as editors seem to decide which way to spin the virtual black hole of facts.

So far all we know is the NCAA finds he meets their criteria.  But the NCAA relies on the fact that Universities have their own controls on admissions.  As far as I can tell from all the articles, everyone's source is the high school football coach, who has gone on record as saying, "I don't know what's going on".

I wish I had the talent to write some program to scrape the Detroit News, because I've now lost all respect for the last reporter there I had respect for, as far as a credible source of information.  Angelique, the latest quote os of 8:20 am PDT

"A source on Monday indicated Dorsey has "qualified, he has made it," but the University of Michigan has not admitted him. "That's where the hang-up is right now." "

Ok, sorry two facts, 1 - the NCAA says he's good to go, 2 - the University of Michigan hasn't decided yet,

The traditional news media has given up, and they now report just like any blog does.  It's all up to the news source to decide if they want to publish substantiated articles slowly or innuendo that can be changed continuously.

Actually, they've already decided, I guess it's up to use readers to decide what we're going to read and how we think about it.

Ok, sorry, that's just silly, we're not going to do that.

now where did I leave my pitchfork?
