Two things working against DD attending U-M as a walk-on:
- $50K+/year OOS cost of attendence expenses.
- Only 2 years of eligibility. He would have to compete with Countess, Floyd, Avery, etc. for PT
DD would be better off going to a school that offers him a scholarship and immediate PT.

but I get the feeling Demar's heart is all about coming to Michigan. That's some good advice, but if he is willing to work his BEHIND off, get mature and replace 'O let do it' with "I'm gonna get it done"...
Everything happens for a reason, and not all of it can be thought out in your head; best of luck to you Demar, however you go...

I have to think that there is no harm in letting him come on as a walk-on. If the kid is willing to pay his own expenses, and only wants a chance to earn his way onto the field, where's the bad in that. If he ends up still having issues then we are not out a schollie and he is simply removed from the team. Again, where's the bad?

I would like to see Demar at UofM... Not only because he's a good player, but also because he's worked really hard and has earned a 2nd chance....I know that he would play for 2 years abut one of those could be a National champion year...

is someone i will root for. like many people here have said, its hard not to hold out hope for him. people take different amounts of time in growing and learning in society and he seems to have settled into himself and has a clear defined feeling for who he is. i wish him nothing but the best and it would be a great story to see him line up one day in our defensive backfield

It would be great if he could find his way into a winged helmet. Who cares if we are already stacked in the secondary. It would only ensure he has to work hard to get onto the field. Getting baby'd and being made to feel entitled is what got him into this mess in the first place. Stay humble and keep working hard DD and hopefully Mallory/Mattison/Hoke give you a serious look my man

If he proves himself at GRCC, which it appears he has made a huge turnaround, then I think they should at least give him a look. It's not like he's some random JUCO kid. He's related to the best player on Michigan. Right now he has the right mentality and that is that he's determined to play for Michigan. We're recruiting guys that aren't sure if they want to play for Michigan and here is a guy that is doing everything he can just to have a chance. Either way, I'm proud of this young man and hope to see him in maize and blue some day.

This article is a great reminder that we can all be pretty harsh on some of these kids who are still figuring it all out. I know I was one of the people who thought DD would be a bad fit--and he very well might have been. I'm also a big believer in redemption. Even when we have negative things to say on here, it's good to remember that these are young men who can grow and change. Thanks for sharing the article!

Part of me says go the NE Patriots route...let him come on as a walk-on and earn a scholarship. If he messes up, even if it's something that someone else may just be suspended for...he's out. Zero tolerance.
But this isn't the NFL, this is a young man's life. I'm not sure you can treat him like Chad Ochocinco or Albert Haynesworth. I'm not sure you can say, "alright, we'll take you...but it's one chance and that's it. We'll give you a legit shot to earn a scholarship, but you have to be perfect."
On the other hand, he could just go elsewhere (NOT MIAMI!!!) and have some good coaching, support, be on equal ground and footing with everyone else and really not have the distractions of what took place here a year ago. Where that place is? I don't know. I've heard good things about Tennessee's new coaching staff in terms of support for players.
I love the come back story, and would CERTAINLY love to see it. I think Dorsey has the potiential to be Mattison's Ed Reed. But with Hoke, Mattison, Mallory and Dave Brandon...I just don't see this "regime" making this happen. I think it would be a nice gesture to reach out and sit down with Dorsey even if you don't recruit him.

I love seeing this guy succeed after the raking he received in the press. Whether or not he ever makes it to Ann Arbor (I doubt it will happen by the way), I'm rooting for him.

Going to GRCC was probably the best decision Demar could have made. In recent years, GRCC has become the go-to program for top-level talent with academic or life issues. heck, a couple of years ago, their quarterback had just got out of jail on a manslaughter case; now he is doing well at a four-year school.
The head coach came from Muskegon High School - which if you're from Michigan, you know is a regular state title contender - so I know Demar is getting taught good fundamentals. They also have a sort of "spiritual advisor / mentor" that assists players with life issues so I'm confident that Demar has come a long way as a person from where he once was.
Unfortunately, Michigan traditionally doesn't do JuCo - for regular students or atheletes. The students you hear of that do transfer are typically top-flight academically and probably would have been admitted to UM out of high school.
As a GR resident though, I have enjoyed being able to watch the talent Demar brings to GRCC first hand and wish him the best of luck wherever he goes.

It sounds like it has already worked out for Dorsey. Much better than if his papers would have been routinely processed and he was part of our current class of freshman?
If he had been admitted to Michigan, would he have overcome the entitlement that led to him fighting with his GRCC teammates and getting a public bitchslapping by Annese in a meeting? If he had achieved his dream right off the bat, would he have learned that some things are worth working your ass of for and that being a 5 star recruit didn't mean he was a good teammate or even a good football player (yet)? I'm very happy for the young man that the situation played out as it did. If he can make it as a walk-on at Michigan, I'm all for it.

I go to GRCC, and whenever I see him he is clowning with his buddies. I said hi to him once and he was pretty confused cause he had no idea who I was, pretty funny stuff. He's also hilarious to watch. I talked to another player on the team, and he said that Demar is "the funniest dude on the team and he's a beast on the field".
I say if we can't give him a schollie, atleast give him a call and have him tryout. He'd clearly make it as a walkon, and then maybe earn a shollie later in his career.
Oh and technically, he's a freshman right now. This is his first season of playing ball at GRCC.

I'm wondering if UofM admissions would be willing to give him a shot. There's a risk, but there's also tremendous reward. It makes a great story.

I would LOVE this kid to suit up for UM. How could you deny him if he has such a strong desire to wear Maize n Blue that he will walk on & pay his own way!?!? I understand the grades have to be in line, etc. But, if he has talent like I saw when he dominated the high school all star game he could go to the league and easily pay off student loans with his 1st paycheck.
Wherever he ends up, gotta root for this kid to succeed. We all make mistakes, hopefully, he learns and grows from them. A little bit of humble pie probably is going a long way for him too.
It'd be a cool story if he made it into a Winged helmet and I have a feeling he would be an instant crowd favorite.

I understand that the cost of tuition is high, but wouldn't you consider the 80k he takes out in loans a perfect investment for a kid like that?
He's got the talent, if he succeeds at Michigan he'll more than easily be able pay off that student loan. If he doesn't he'll have a MIchigan degree at worst.

Denard comes from a family of very modest income. I doubt he'd be inclined to come to M as a walk-on -- and pay full tuition -- when other top programs will be offering full rides.

It's certainly a risk. if he walks on and pays his own way he could earn a scholarship. If he walk on and remains a walk on he doesn't have to pay his student loans back until after school. A Michigan degree will set him up nicely in the workplace after college. If he gets drafted and goes to the NFL, he'll have no problems paying off his student loans. I know there are a lot of IF's in these scenarios, but he appears to be very determined. i give him credit for that.

Unless he's really really pulled it around at GRCC, I'd be surprised if he could get in on grades alone. I would love to see him get a scholarship though if we had one available.

What a story this would be in 10 years!
Demar Dorsey goes through what he went through in the recruiting process, goes to GRCC, transfers to UM. Goes to try-outs. Makes the team as a walk on, earns a scholarship. Has 3 great years in the Maize and Blue. Ends up earning All-America Honors. 1st Round Pick.

If I'm not mistaken, he would have been living in the state of Michigan for 2 years when the time comes for financial aid .. wouldn't that classify him as being an in state student? I thoght federal laws around financial aid requires state residence for a year before being able to receive in state tuition.
Anyone?

<br>U-M's policy states that you must demonstrate you (or, more usually, your parents) have been living in MI for a reason other than college attendance. So moving up here for college won't cut it. Even if you buy a house. Even if your spouse gets a job.
