Delonte Hollowell signs with the Lions

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Delonte Hollowell has signed as an UDFA with the Detroit Lions!

Hollowell is the first Wolverine to play for the Lions since Jeff Backus played his final season before retiring in 2012.

For a quick reference, I'm using Wikipedia:

1996 season[edit]

In 1996, Dreisbach rebounded from his injury to beat out Brian Griese and sophomore Tom Brady as the Wolverines' starting quarterback. Dreisbach served as Michigan's starting quarterback for the first 11 games of the 1996 season, leading the team to an 8–3 record in those games.[7][8] After tying a Michigan record with four touchdown passes in a 45–29 victory over Michigan State, he was selected as Michigan's Athlete of the Week.[9] In 11 games during the 1996 season, Dreisbach completed 149 of 269 passes (55.4% completion percentage) for 2,025 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.[10]

In 12 games as a starter during the 1995 and 1996 seasons, Dreisbach led the Wolverines to a 12–4 record and completed 205 of 375 passes for 2,875 yards, 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.[10]

Brad Johnson...Michael Cox... etc. that is just off the top of my head...if i really put some thoughts in it, I could definitely think of more..but I won't because this is a stupid topic to debate.

Hoke and company were the coaching staff for his entire career.  They obviously miscalculated on several good players (Again, I could name them but I won't.  If you follow the program you know these players).

First of all, I said "generally." There are exceptions.
Second, you must have missed the year where Michael Cox went to UMass and started at running back.
I'm pretty confident that the coaching staff did not miscalculate in regard to Hollowell.

Saying that Hoke dropped the ball because a player who couldn't get off his bench signed a tryout is crazy.

Half of these guys don't even make it to the first preseason game and maybe 1 in 100 will make it out of training camp.

You are right because guys with elite 4.34 speed grow on trees. To put in perspective the fastest times at the NFL combine this year were: 4.28, 4.31, 4.33.

I bet Harbaugh could find a place to put him on the field to at least do something.

Where is it again where Hoke is coaching next year?

a) Delonte Hollowell did not run a 4.34. Pro day times are notoriously fast. IIRC, Raymon Taylor ran a 4.42 and Devin Funchess ran a 4.48 at Michigan's pro day. Do you really think all three of those guys are sub-4.5 players, especially after Funchess ran a 4.7 at the Combine?

b) Hoke *did* find a place on the field for Hollowell to do something. He was used on special teams coverage, and when he came in on defense, Hoke used him to allow touchdowns.

c) Hoke isn't coaching anywhere, as you know. But if I just made millions of dollars over four years and got fired, I might take a season off, too. I hope you don't actually think he couldn't find a job if he wanted one.

Tough to stick as a UDFA. It would be nice if a couple guys could show well enough to at least get put on the practice squad and see how they develop.

Can't say I foresaw him getting signed by a team considering his lack of playing time (and honestly his performance when he did play) but he did have a great pro day. Detroit hasn't exactly set the world on fire with their UDFA signings this year, maybe with some coaching he can grab a practice squad spot, but he would have to be considered a longshot.

He probably got coached up by Harbaugh in the last few weeks and will end up in the Pro bowl

After all, he coached Winston for a few hours and he ended up the number one pick!

I would say that in a few generations people will speak of someone having "The Harbaugh Touch" & if you tried to talk about the Midas touch they'll think you're talking about  mufflers

It's only right I type like this: GOOD FOR DELONTE. EVEN IF HE DOESNT STICK HE FINALLY REACHED THE ULTIMATE GOAL AND ALL OF HIS HARD WORK HAS DEFINITELY PAYED OFF.

That's actually kind cool for him really, to sign with the hometown team (Hollowell is from Detroit, after all), and congratulations to him. Actually, I didn't even consider Hollowell as someone who would be signed because there just wasn't enough data really for him, but a nice pro day later and hopefully he sees the field on Sunday.

Not thread related whatsoever but this Founders dirty bastard is hitting hard. Good stuff. Just recently moved up to Indiana from Florida and starting to enjoy the very good Michigan beers.

but was he the player that almost returned the final kickoff for a TD in the UTL1 game? Fumbled at about the 1" line? Either way, I'd have expected Taylor to grab into a team as an UDFA! Especially before Hollowell but good for him. I know he can run so if a staff can coach him up quickly you never know.

Because he's fast and stuff. Mel was also fast and stuff.
Mel was a supplemental draft pick after playing RB at Purdue. That's all I got lol.

one of my favorite childhood Lions! As a kid who almost worshipped Barry Sanders, few other Lions had my individual respect. I liked "the Lions" but it was really "The Barry Sanders Lions" lol. So, it took a lot for another player to get me to care about them individually. I liked Mel. From Tecmo Super Bowl to occasionally calling out his name when is return a kick as a kid. I liked Mel but had no idea of his pre-Lion career. Cool info.
