Dejected kids in the U of M memes
Anybody else feel for the U of M students that the TV cameras focused on after the game Saturday? They keep popping up in all the memes and T-shirts making fun of us. I especially feel bad for the kid in the glasses. I feel like that could have been me or any of my friends. Some of those kids seem to be getting an unfair amount of attention and I wish there was a good way to support them for taking the brunt of all the shots people are taking at us. Would starting a crowd funding campaign be a stupid idea? Just curious what some of you guys thought or if there was a better idea to support them. I would donate some cash to the kid with glasses. I feel bad that his image is everywhere and he's not even getting paid.

This. Literally thousands of better ways to give your money. Being dejected over a football game is small in the big picture.

This being America- the savvy students will figure out that the more dejected they look the more money they make- Economics 101

Yeah - I already donate to a bunch of worthy causes - in fact, my wife just started a charity to help feed people who have nothing.
I just don't love the idea of people profiting off other people's likenesses like they are doing with these kids. I donate money to the school and wouldn't mind diverting some of that money to these kids. I would hate for somebody to steal my likeness to mock and make money. Maybe giving them money is a stupid idea to compensate them, but nobody else is offering up any other ideas. And yes, maybe I'm reading the situation wrong, and they are enjoying the exposure. Not sure. Just thought this was a good place to bring it up.

I don't know what t-shirts you're talking about, but if the problem is those kids being exploited and bullied (which I think is making a mountain out of a molehill), then it would seem they should be suing to get their images off of those shirts or get a cut of the sales.

Great humblebrag in the first paragraph.

Sorry if it came across that way - it wasn't ill intentioned. I was just reponding to this post:
My advice is if you have some extra cash that you are looking to donate with, then donate it to under privileged youth. Not someone who is upset over a football game. That's just my opinion though.

There are so many wonderful charities that could do much with not very much.

I definitely think that contacting a lawyer and checking out the legalities regarding the T-shirt situation is a good idea. Some people might think it's humorless, but I don't care - I sure as hell would not want my face turned into an opposing team's shirt, and if someone did so, I'd be looking to make them pay.

If I was a student and that happened, I wouldn't mind as long as I got the royalties I deserved for my likeness. If people are selling shirts with his pic, he should definitely demand a share of the profits now.
The added bonus: Sparty trolls would be contributing to a Michigan student every time they bought a shirt.

It worked for Ed O'Bannon and the Ncaa football video game. How is this any different than that?

You're one of the members on this board that he's asking "Would starting a crowd funding campaign be a stupid idea?"
So please feel free to tell him that . . . Yes, yes it is a stupid idea.

I hope they are out of luck starting today so we don't have to wait until next year to start the downward trend for MSU

Late night post on a bye-week.....
You're killing me. Unfortunately, I can't down-vote this.
Minnesota can't come quickly enough!

I am the student/fan known as 'glasses kid.' I've been reading mgoblog for about a year now, but I figured this would be as good of a time as any to make an account.
First, I want to shoot down any idea of giving me donations. Other than having to deal with such a tough loss, my life has not been any worse because of my fame. It has actually been pretty fun being a local celebrity. It's unfortunate that it happened in this manner, but please don't think I have gotten much negativity from this. I appreciate the consideration, but I do not need any funding because of my fame.
In regards to the Ohio shirts, as MGoBlayze said, I have started the process of seeing what I can gain from that. Thanks to those that responded to Rogue Rage's board post a few days ago with any legal tips and help. Hopefully I can profit off of how they have used my image, or at the very least prevent my image from becoming more popular among the Buckeye fans.
Once again, thanks for thinking of me and Go Blue!

Dear Glasses Kid,
I find it very impressive that you can make such a level-headed and rational post at 2:30am on the weekend. I know when I was in college I would have been lying face down in the carpet at that point. You no doubt have a bright future ahead of you.
Keep up the good work!

Thank you for making the essential point that the OP's suggestion is completely ludicrous.
October 24th, 2015 at 3:16 PM ^
My suggestion was to support these people that were singled out if they needed it. My question was whether or not donating a $1 or $2 to a fund for these kids would be a 'stupid idea'. I go to a lot of away games and my wife always reminds me to not look dejected after a bad play in case the camera is being panned on us. I would absolutely be livid if I became a meme or worse, somebody was making money off my likeness without my permission. I haven't posted a lot and thought this forum was a good place to bring this up. I thought it was a good intentioned post and wasn't trying to offend anyone.

That's great to hear! I thought it was unfair that out of the 100K+ Wolverine fans, they singled you out. Glad to hear your fellow students are supporting you and have turned this into a positive experience.

You've been saying this for 3 years now (I know because I teased you about it in 2014 haha) but I finally agree with you in 2016. But I thought this would be the year 2 the way the 2 teams went into the game and with the injuries and home field. I did not count on the fact Dantonio sold his soul to the devil for the right to win over UM.
For the first time since 2011 we'll be the older team and Taysom hill and all... ;)

You are right. I am not sure if he purposefully ran towards the student section to taunt. I was in the next section. The players actually came running there first. Dantonio followed them. Still, he is a Douche. And everyone who said this is like a superbowl to them, it was true. They all acted like it was a superbowl.
