Deflategate penalties announced

Wow.  My CBS app popped up with this -

Brady suspended 4 games.  Pats lose two draft picks, one a first rounder.  Pats also fined $1 million.

That's... heavy handed.

This is exactly how I feel,

I am always so conflicted when I watch Patriots games - on one hand I love Brady, but on the other I dislike the Pats.

This usually ends in me somehow finding a uneasy joy with either outcome.

Let the Pats hang. Just like the Red Sox in 2004, the Patriots tricked everybody into thinking a team with all the advantages of being from a sports Mecca was some kind of underdog one time before severely overstaying their welcome.

At least when the Celtics won their recent title they had the courtesy to go back to sucking right away.

Just to be perfectly clear: I don't care about the impropriety or the question of guilty or not, but I am excited about the Patriots potentially sucking sooner than they would have otherwise.

This is an organization that likes to toe the line, occasionally it bites you in the ass. They take questionable players and sometimes that doesn't pan out. Just because Tom is a Michigan Man shouldn't make him immune from criticism and penalty. This is a manipulation of the rules and is WRONG. PERIOD. Keep the non-sequitur arguments about Ray Rice out of the conversation.

There is ZERO evidence that incriminates Brady in any of this. Good luck standing in front of a judge and saying "well, you know, we have reason to believe that he did it so...convict" No, you idiot - that's what a warrant is for, to collect evidence substantiating from probable cause. That is not actually mean anything until it is proven that a violation had occurred. There is no F'ing proof!

I think this goes to the NFL thinking the Pats have been doing this for years. The evidence if reduced turnovers since teams wre allowed to use their own balls is pretty compelling that the Pats had to be doing something different than the rest of the NFL. He'll be back in week 5 and the Patriots will likely turn this into a positive.

They should suspend the refs who touch the ball in between every play and didn't notice because it's barely noticable and isn't an advantage.  Even if it is an advantage does that mean the NFL doesn't want the ball to be easy to throw and catch?  Why not make the ball out of slippery silk and ban gloves?  Then we can watch bad passes, missed catches and fumbles all over the place.  Yeah, that's what the fans want to see.

for his corked bat incident. That is in a 162 game season. So Sosa gets suspended for 5% of his season. Brady is being suspended for 25% of the season. And honestly, the deflating of footballs is more closely related to putting pine tar on your bat than corking a bat. Both help someone hold what they need to hold. I think you'd have a hard time convincing me that a deflated football flies further and more accurately than a fully inflated football.

and get it dropped to a 2 or 3 game suspension.  I don't see the difference between this and Sean Payton being aware of a bounty on his team.  I'm not saying either punishment is justifiable, but Goodell has shown he will punish you for being "aware".

LOOK EVERYONE. WE CARE ABOUT JUSTICE AND HOLDING PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE. WE ARE HOLDING PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE. LOOK OVER HERE

Also the NFLs statement says "generally aware" and "unlikely" he didn't know what was going on. The NFL is going to get shredded in arbitration.

it's not even remotely funny. I understood why the NFL dragged the story out with the investigation and everything, but I always assumed the punishment would be a slap on the wrist fine, maybe even a 6-figure fine if the Ginger Hammer was feeling brash. This is a whole new level. I don't think Kraft will be mild-mannered about this and I expect Tom to push this to the plausible extreme to try and get it reduced.

This is truly a case of the spying done a few years back and the deflating allegations. I will continue to call them allegations because how f'ing vague is generally aware?!?! If this is any other team besides the Patriots, no way there is both a 4 game suspension and loss of a 1st round pick.

Goodell is trying to prove what a badass he is. He got booed off the stage during the draft. Simmons said he had no balls and now he’s taking it personally.

I would also like to know, how a 2017 4th round pick randomly tossed in has any relevance for this punishment? It’s like Goodell has a spinning wheel of the final "bonus" punishment. Not even a Pats fan here, but it really shows the craziness that the NFL now operates with.

This is Fking incredible.  All of this over a non-story and a non-factor in any game.  Brad Johnson admitted that he had the balls doctored before the Super Bowl in 03.  Jerry Rice admitted that he used stick-em after it was outlawed.  Tons of players on every team are on PEDs....

and the NFL and Roger "asshole" Goodell bow to public pressure and lay these penalties on Brady and the Pats...

while Wife Beaters go free and drafted...

Fuck The NFL. Fuck em.

"It is more probable than not" will get you suspended for 4 games and more?

In that report, there's nothing new or directly evident. It's all speculative. How can a lawyer release a report like that as a final report? NFL only cares about its PR, not about evidence for the very beginning. We have seen this from all the high-profiled cases.

Also, the rule itself or the execution of the rule is a joke. NFL doesn't require both teams use the same balls? How is that fair?

I am glad I don't really care about NFL.

The issue with punishing Brady is it is all based on conjecture. There’s not even really circumstantial evidence; there’s really no evidence of Brady’s direct participation in any scheme put forth in Wells’ report. The report implicates Brady basically because it says he had to have known, not because they had any proof that he did know or stated to either McNally or Jastremski that he wanted balls deflated after inspection. The report simply doesn’t find him guilty.

I hope Brady lawyers up and sues the NFL for defamation of character.

Goodell is citing the "integrity of the game" lol... they are such hypocrites.

There are no ex-Patriots who got traded or who were cut who come out and say "hey Tom Brady cheats." Other elite QB's alter their footballs, ie Rodgers. Where's the penalty for him?

Aaron Rodgers wasn't caught with improper balls.  However, he did admit to a CBS analysts that he deliberately overinflates the balls on purpose, because sometimes the refs don't notice.

Perhaps the NFL should ban Aaron Rodgers for the 2 games against the Detroit Lions in punishment?  :-)
