Defensive Studs at Dr. Phillips

Submitted by SouthernWolverineFan on

Dr. Phillips has only given up 14 points in five games!

A couple of them versus rival teams that would presumably have decent to strong offenses:

Game 1 versus “perennial power” Orlando Edgewater = 48-7

Game 3 versus rival Olympia = 49-0

They have outscored their 5 opponents 243-14.

I know they have defensive backs HaSean Clinton-Dix and Roderick Ryles, but it takes a lot more than a stud secondary to completely dominate on the defensive side of the ball.

So my question for Tom, Tim, Brian, Anyone in the Know is who are their star DLs and LBs...and are we recruiting any of them?

I was considering posting, but judging by the demeanor of this Board lately, I chose to hold my thought to myself.  Anyway, thanks for asking.  I'll plus one you both for the eventual neg's coming your way.

Darryl Monroe (6'1", 215 lbs.) is one of their linebackers. He's coming up with the rest of them for the Wisconsin game. He's committed to Washington State, but I've heard that it's a soft soft commitment. He doesn't have an offer yet, but the coaches are evaluating him.

I don't think it's so much their defensive line as much as it is their secondary and linebackers.

Their secondary includes Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix (5 star), Roderick Ryles (3 star), LaQuentin Smith (3 star), Andreis Norris, and Ryan Luckett (3 star). I'd imagine it's pretty tough for a high school kid to pass against that lineup.

I know of Darryl Monroe and LaQuentin Smith, I belive Smith has a UM offer and are evaluating Monroe. Both are LB's. Never heard of any of the D-Line

EDIT: Tom beat me!!! Damn you for being Awesome!!!!

I know that he is committed to Alabama, but a few weeks back, there were rumblings that we had a chot at him.  Provided we keep winning, maybe RR can slip Dee some snako oil to pass on to HaHa and we can convince him to come up north where immediate playing time in our secondary is awaiting him . . .

TomVH, is there any chance of this?

What?  I can dream, can't I?

It would be a coup to get Haha, but I think he is going to stay with Bama.  It would be nice to pick up some additional LBs, but any of these guys will take time to develop.

They've also got a junior LB, Philip Amone. The staff thinks very highly of him and he's a real player. Someone in the community told me he'll likely be a very good recruit next year, hearing from the big boys.

It would be really interesting, the 2012 and beyond defense might be made up of all Cass Tech and Dr Phillips guys.  As someone said on one of the recruiting threads, Smith was annoucing with Dee.  I guess he hasn't formally committed yet.

Also, how did the Glenville guys enjoy their visit?

I wonder if our defense poor play is helping us or hurting us in recruiting.

Some kids have to be looking at loads of playing time, while others may be saying they don't want to be a part of a defense that bad....

We have to show some improvement, and add a few elite players, and then many will flock over.  It would've been nice to have gotten that Cass Tech kid that is out at Oregon right now.

I actually tweeted this the other day, but I asked one of the top overall players in the country this exact question.

He said that it's a positive and negative to have a bad, young defense. The recruits recognize that the players aren't performing well, so they see the opportunity to play early. On the other hand they also see that the players are young, and that they'll most likely only get better from there. It's kind of a double edged sword.

He did say though that if a recruit is really interested in that school, using Michigan for example, they'll look at the potential for the younger players to get better. Depending on the position, there are some positives and maybe some negatives to having youth.

Does anyone have any input re: recruits opinions of Greg Robinson as a defensive coordinator and the overall defensive philosophy?  I am sure playing time/opportunity is big, but lets face it, since the end of 2006 through this last weekend, we have not exactly been the beacon of defense.  Watch the Big Ten highlights from the last few years.....MI shows up everywhere, unfortunately as the team someone set a record against.  Now we are talking about the fact that todays recruits were in middle/elementary school the last time we had decent defense (2006 - last two games obvious exceptions).

What have been the defensive recruits takes on the scheme, the coaches, etc?  I just have not heard anything really exciting about Robinson's ability to recruit/connect/close on those top level recruits.

Does anyone have input/opinions?

Recruits in general don't pay as much attention to every little aspect of the game like fans do. They're kids that are meeting with coaches they see on TV every weekend, which would be exciting for anyone.

I think it's pretty much crossing the line to bash a coach from a rival schools when it comes to negative recruiting, so you don't really hear recruits saying that they heard so and so is a bad coach. In Greg Robinson's situation, he has a super bowl ring and has been a coach at some big time programs. The recruits don't analyze every little part of how he runs his defense, or how they've performed. Especially if a defensive coach says hey X recruit, our defense has been down and we really need some playmaker like you to help us with what we want to do. We think you fit our scheme and style of play.

a stud recruit to find a stud? usually they have to ask the other stud recruit, who's busy helping move a stud from one pasture to another, to borrow a stud finder so that the stud can find the stud. because a stud should find a stud before hanging a framed picture of said stud riding a stud throughout an equestrian event.
