Defensive Recruits

Submitted by Ziff72 on
I just had a question for people in the know. Ok so we have 15-16 incoming defensive recruits, none of which has enrolled early. While their potential impact for the upcoming season on the field has a wide variance on these boards, I think we can all agree they will be critical for depth and at the least practice this coming year. Most have the better part of 4 months before they report to Michigan in June for the last half of summer conditioning. My question is that a lot can be accomplished in 4 months if focused. Do the kids receive any type of welcome to Michigan packet from the coaches with prescribed workouts, dvd's with drills, base defensive packages, etc.? I heard last year Denard was in pretty close contact with Coach Smith during the Spring. How much contact can the coaches have?? Can they meet with the kids? What about Barwis's staff?? Let's face it the last half of most kids seniors year is blow off city. For kids like Dorsey, Cullen etc..where there are no bodies for depth I would think a lot could be accomplished in 4 months so that they could hit the ground running in June or are the coaches afraid of having that much info out there?? Saturday morning 6:00am at the Dorsey house, the bell rings. A bleary eyed Mr. Dorsey approaches the door with a baseball bat and pulls away the curtain. WTF?? Coach Barwis?? "Yes Sir is Demar up?" DEMAR!!!! Let's go son. "Gonna be a long day son, let's go!!!"

From Cullen Christian: "When I first met Barwis, the thing that came to my mind is, this dude is into what he does," Christian said. "I thought he was going to rip my arm off when he shook my hand. He's a real good dude. I like him a lot. He's into what he does, and he really cares about the kids. He's a real good trainer - I can tell."

I was curious about this as well so I went on a google hunt. It's hard to find specifics and the NCAA rule book isn't available for free online (or at least I couldn't find it). I did find an Eastern Michigan FAQ regarding summer workouts. You can see it here Summer Conditioning Guidlines Some relevant bits: A prospective student-athlete may engage in voluntary summer workouts conducted by an institution's certified strength and conditioning coach with department-wide duties, provided he has (1)signed a National Letter of Intent or (2) he is enrolled in the institution's summer term prior to his initial full-time enrollment at the certifying institution. An institution may loan clean apparel (e.g., t-shirts, shorts, laundry services, socks and undergarments) to all football prospective student-athlete who qualify for involvement in such activities (See also NCAA Staff Interp., May 28, 2009) In order for any athletically related activity to be considered "voluntary," all of the following conditions must be met: 1. The student-athlete cannot be required to report back to the coaching staff any information related to their participation in a voluntary workout. No athletics department staff member who observes the activity (e.g., strength coach, trainer) may report back to the coaching staff any information related to the activity. 2. Activity must be initiated and requested solely by the student-athlete. The student-athlete cannot be required to attend the voluntary workout. 3. Staff members may provide information to the student-athlete related to available opportunities to participate in the voluntary activity (e.g., times when the weight room will be open). 4. Attendance and participation cannot be recorded for purposes of reporting information to the coaching staff. 5. The student-athlete cannot be rewarded or subject to penalty for choosing to participate or electing not to participate in voluntary workouts. Required meetings and workouts for student-athletes would be considered a violation of NCAA rules, however, student-athletes may meet individually with a coaching staff member, as long as the meeting was initiated voluntarily by a student athlete. It is not considered a countable athletically related activity, provided any discussion between the coach and the student-athlete is limited to general counseling activities and does not involve countable athletically related activities (e.g. chalk talk; use of equipment relating to the sport; field, floor or on -court activity). (11/7/91 Official Interp.) Non-coaching staff members with sport specific responsibilities may not participate with or observe student-athletes in the staff member's sport who are engaged in non -organized voluntary athletically related activities (e.g., pick-up games). (11.7.1.1.1.1) Coaches may not observe student-athletes participating in voluntary weight training and conditioning activities during the summer (17.02.13)

Probably not more than 3-5 lbs. (that is still significant) Even though he can put on a lot weight, I don't see him putting on much more than that because they want him to keep his speed. I don't think they will want to blow him up so quickly this first summer. I could see him putting on 10-12 between the 2010 and 2011 seasons, or even more if they want to move him over to safety, like they did Woolfolk last year.

a miracle to beat Purdue where as before a 7-5 season meant people wanted you fired the freshman defensive players may make a small contribution to the 2010 season, but really, they are freshman, this is real life , not a season in ncaa10
