Defensive Formations

I am not really familiar with defensive formations. What I know I have read on this blog. Can some one explain what was going on today? I was under the impression that most of the time we would have 3 down linemen, 3 LBs, and the quick, which could be a pass rusher or another OLB. Most of what I saw today were 3 or 4 down linemen with the SLB and the OLB standing at the line with one or two LBs in usual form a few yards from the line. I never really saw what has been drawn up online. When we had 3 down linemen, were we in our 4-3/3-4 package and the SAM was just playing close to the line? When we have 4 down linemen, is it usual to have LBs on either side of the line? Thanks

mostly a 4-3 under as our base formation today. Graham was playing DE, MM was playing DT, RVB was playing DE/DT depending on the defensive call/package and then Roh is playing the DE/LB hybrid. Brown was then playing off the edge when there wasn't a slot, and on the slot when there was.

I was also surprised how aggressive they were playing the SS position. Mike Williams came up to the line right behind the lineman or linebackers for a good majority of the plays.
